I know a lot of you have done epoxy, tiles, etc..

Has anyone just flat out painted the floor? Any disadvantages of such?

i have seen garage floorsrs after owners have used regular paint and so called porch floor paint,   does not work, peels right off, wrinkles when water stands on it for a while, is not chemical resistant...not worth the time or effort...regular paint does not bond to the concrete well enough to be durable as a garage floor should be

paint is a surface material. it just lays on the floor and peels off easily.

epoxy on the other hand is a polymer that when the substrate is properly prepped, it soaks into the concrete and basically forms a very hard bond. Most epoxies are a 2 part system that when mixed will cause a chemical reaction that will turn it into a very hard solid.

We ususally charge people $1-$2 sqft just to remove paint or failed epoxy before installing our own. Save now and pay later. You'll get what you pay for.

there is some concrete paints made by UGL and Quikrete/Valspar out there that sell for liek $25.00 a gallon, but like everyone said spend the extra few bucks and get the epoxys, of course prep work is the key.

Just don't do it. They painted the concrete steps over by my Squadron and they looked like garbage in one week.

My dads garage has a painted slab.
He painted it 4 years ago, then 2 years ago, and should be doing it again this year.

That alone should be enough to stear you away from the idea of painting it.
Rustoleum is fairly cheap, and according to some people here, it will last if you prep it properly. It's on sale this week near my place, so that's what I bought. There is no way I'll do like my dad and paint the thing every 2 years.

I moved into a house a few years ago where they had painted the garage floor. It is peeling bad and when I get to cleaning it out it will get a fresh epoxy job. If you want to see pics of it peeling I can send them to you and you would be better saving your money now and get an epoxy floor down the road.

I do not have an answer for the OP, but I do have a question to add.
Why is it if you spill paint by accident on your garage floor it seems to last forever?:headscrat I have a paint stain on mine from just after I moved in back in 1997. Of course I cleaned it up as soon as it happened but it is still there.

Sizzler,

It is the same age old questions: "Why does the bread always drop buttered side down?" LOL

Wrong.

The toast does not hit my floor...my dog snatches it before it even gets a chance to getting close to it.

Last office I worked in had a mastiff - if you tossed him a piece of buttered toast he'd catch it and the whole piece disappeared into his mouth! He was a good dog and very gentle with people, but the sound of his teeth snapping together when he'd catch a treat was fairly unnerving!

sizzler,

a small trick, let the spilled paint dry/cure (do not try to wipe up) the paint will pop off the surface of the concrete. I have spilled paint and tried to wipe up right after, never completely came off, but afterward I spilled paint and got busy, did not clean until after drying, popped right off, no stain, I have done this several time since.

BTW.. I am speaking of water based latex and a very smoother garage floor.

from Mythbusters site...

Toast is more likely to land buttered side-down when dropped.

busted

In an extensive and highly objective test the toast showed no statistical preference for landing buttered side-down or up when dropped. It was an even 50-50 split when the final results were compared. However, when pushed off the side of a table, toast showed preference to flip once and land buttered side down.

It is exponentially related to just how hungry you are.

If you are really hungry, it will really fall butter side down...
