hmmm....i see the point. maybe a pick of the ground pawl on top of the original will show how much to shave.

YES. I rebuild the ratchets at Sears and I've been doing that same thing for a couple years now. I also clip a little bit off of the spring to make them a little less stiff.

The new Chinese ones have the older style pawl with a v shape.
