Time wise that is.

I built my house in 2003 and cleared/leveled the upper lot for the barn in 2007. Over the years I've used the cleared area for car/trailer storage, a soccer field for my son, turn around space for the truck and a place to dump extra materials from other jobs. About a year ago I bought & set up a 30x30 hoop house and built shelving in it for parts. At times I had up to 4 cars in it but it would vary depending upon what cars were home and which cars were at different shops having work done.

Then tropical storm Sandy came....and the realization I needed to better protect my cars & parts.

The surveyor was called, site drawings were done, plans were drawn & permit was pulled and we started.

Pole barn design, with two bays - the storage bay is 20x60 with room for 6 cars, 12 if I get stacker lifts. The second bay is the work bay which is 16x46 which should allow me to have an asymmetrical work lift at one end and room for my Ford Super Duty in front of that. I have a property setback line that runs diagonally across the corner so I needed to have a smaller work bay.

26 holes were bored, 6x6's & 4x6's went up and trusses were ordered. The parts department (everything except full motors) will be on the 2nd floor with a room 14x46 with a full 8' ceiling.

A dark green metal roof has been ordered and rough sawn vertical ship-lap pine siding will be installed. The exterior look will be similar to an indoor basketball court I built for a customer last year.

So here it sits - 4 days work, 4 men - Wednesday we finish the trusses, the roof perlins, the plywood for the upper floor and the landing for the stairs. It should be a busy day if the weather holds! ;)

That Jeep auger rig is cool!

It is! Made quick work of it too - 26 holes 12" round in a little less than 3 hours. Friend of mine owns it, puts in fences for a living - paid for itself within 2 months of him building it - 25 years ago!

Good to see another person here from the Performance Years Forum. I would love to see how you go about doing the floor, I am assuming you are going to do concrete. I have a pole barn with pavers for a floor and would like to see how it should be done around here.

Planning on poured concrete with 3/4" pex on an 8x8 wire mesh for radiant heat but that likely won't happen until the spring. I'm just looking to get it enclosed for now.

I've got to get the goats back in the barn! ;)

So THIS is where you've been spending your time! We've missed you over on PY.

Not sure about Jeremy getting on here - he just took his garage money and bought a new truck. I think he's planning on putting a car or two in here but he hasn't been over to help yet so you know how that goes - no help, no hope! :D

Attic floor gets put down tomorrow, rest of the trusses go up, rest of the roof perlins go in. If we have time I'll frame in for the windows in the back gable - not sure what we'll do with the front facade yet - I think I'll have an architect friend of mine take a run at it.

Maybe a little stone on either side of the doors - 2 to 3' high, not sure if I want to go barn style doors or old-school country gas & service station look.

Today's work...Attic floor (parts department ;)) plywood is down, header for the stairs is in and the fill in rafters. Smaller trusses went in and some of the rest of the roof perlins.

I don't know anything about pole barn construction. So are they always built with no foundation? I guess a slab is installed at some point. I want to build a garage near three huge walnut trees. But I don't want to break the roots with a foundation. I am thinking about driving pilings, and attaching a foundation to them. But it looks like a pole building would work maybe. Can someone clear this up for me.

Any information and close up pictures of the jeep/auger...I've never seen that before! Wow!

No foundation and perfect for a site like mine. The location I had was originally a natural trough in ledge that I cleared & filled in over time. I could have blasted and put in a foundation or scraped to it and pinned a foundation to it but in either case it would have cost substantially more. Just use certified ground contact posts and set them below frost level - I poured concrete around mine, but building code does not require that - and you can just fill them in with dirt once the post is in.

Once mine is in I'm going to insulate the perimeter and pour a 6" slab.

Unfortunately I don't have any close-ups - these are the only pictures I took of it. But next time I see him I can take some closer ones. I think it runs off a PTO and he has a set of rams that lets him lay it down onto the roll bar when transporting.

Thanks for posting this. I'm planning to start a build in the spring. when I saw your photos the terrain looked familiar. I'm on the CT MA line.

I'll be interested to see how you pour the floor. It looks like in one photo that the right rear corner in the back is below grade and I can see the house in your backyard underneath the girt.

Not being familiar w/ pole barns my question is; wouldn't it be better to lay down gravel and roll it before drilling the for the posts? that way you would have a uniform base on which to build up the floor.

Best of luck with the build . . .

Regards,

.

Yes, you could do it that way, I'll just be doing it after the fact. I'm just going to put the roof on and get the siding up for now, the floor will get poured in the spring.

Now that I'm all set with Allstate I was able to take down the hoop house on Monday, tuesday the Christmas decorations came down & today I moved a couple cars around so I could set up a shop in the garage to build the window frames.

I'm using some old sashes from a lake house project I did for awning windows high up on the walls - just for lighting. Using some reclaimed pine to make the frames for them as well.

I finally released the siding order today - rough sawn 10" ship-lap installed vertically, and the roofing - 29 ga, Classic Tuff-Rib panels with a 40 year warranty in Evergreen. :) Both should get here next week....praying for good weather!

Put together the windows last week in a makeshift shop in my garage and got those put up on Friday. That's not me, that's Rob who works for me - you'll see him in several of the pictures throughout this build. I fired him several years ago - but he keeps showing up. :dunno:

Monday I had a bunch of office stuff to do & Tuesday I had a meeting first thing so we only got in a half day yesterday. Put up some insulation and the Durock for the stone apron and got some Tyvek put up as well as a little siding. Today we finished the 60' side.

Dead nuts straight - pretty good for a pole barn with lots of ledge around!

My truck looks small in there! :D

You're going to have a really nice shop soon sir. I love the look of the offset front doors, I'm not sure what the proper term for that is.

What's the ceiling height, and how much height will your parts room have?

From finished slab to finished ceiling I'll have 13'-1", attic has 8' from the floor to the horizontal tie at the top of the truss - 14' wide. The offset isn't done really for any stylistic reason - I have a zoning setback line that clips that corner so the work bay had to be shorter. :dunno:

Boss, what is the story on the blue gp with spoiler in the fifth pic? We had a blue '92 GTP with the spoiler, sun roof etc. Nice car, sold it to buy a roll back. That is going to be a nice shop. I have 5 Pontiacs in 12x20 tents, one in a 24' enclosed trailer, one under a tarp and one more tucked under my deck. So, needless to say I am a little envious (ok, alot) of your new shop. Enjoy, sounds like you have waited a long time.

The blue GP was my Mom's car who passed away last February - and is mine now - she loved that car! It's under my deck at the moment wrapped up as well.

I've got stuff everywhere and have needed to get it together for a long time. This build won't be as expensive as I had figured so it's a good time to do it. I'll really be loving it this time next year when I can go out in the morning and hop into my truck that's been sitting in a 60* heated barn all night or go out and work on something and not be freezing or getting wet!

Absolutely fabulous and amazingly efficient work!

Your Mom would surely be proud of your work and the way you're caring for her car, well done.

Thanks.

Soffits all got done today - again with roughsawn pine & 2" soffit vent in brown. We also got the drip edge on for the metal roofing. Framed in the main gable on the front and put the double window in there. Unfortunately I won't be able to load anything in that way - it's almost completely over the other roof, but I will be doing a small barn door on the small gable and will have a block & tackle hanging from the beam we put up there today.

We also did more cross bracing up in the trusses - added another 10 2x4 braces to the 12 that were there already. Between that, the siding and the roofing getting screwed on, we should be in good shape.

I also got a text this morning from another builder friend of mine - he's pulling out a kitchen & wanted to know if I could use the cabinets! SURE! Nice plywood boxes and solid oak frames & doors - will probably need a little paint, but they were my favorite price.....FREE! I'll be stopping by his job tomorrow to check them out. :)

Picked up some cabinets today - FREE. Have 6' of base cabinets, a 3' wide tall 12" deep cabinet (3 doors) and then another 7' or so of uppers that are also 12" deep. The 30" sink base will be getting a sink from the same job too. :)

I'm thinking a nice dark green will contrast well with the red toolboxes that will be going next to them.

Good score! Just think what equivalently sized cabinets, hardware, sink, etc. would have cost you.

P.S. - You owe your builder friend a case of beer! lol

I plowed his driveway two weeks ago so when he & the family got home after they holidays they didn't have to stomp through 10" of snow - he still figures he owes me. :)
