GENERAL TOOL DISCUSSION WARNING:
Reading these boards may result in intense, deep, inner feelings of disgust with your current collection of cheap tools, a sudden strong increased desire for tools that "just work", an appreciation of professional grade tools; even if you aren't a professional, a new found "need" to acquire these tools. Upon acquisition of said tools; results in a deep sense of satisfaction, when the right tool for the job is in your hand, helps you get the job done right and as efficiently as possible!

POSSIBLE SIDE EFFECTS WARNING:
Reduction in personal income may soon follow; as your new found tool "needs" become more apparent and your ability to stand cheap tools diminishes!
When visiting professional service establishments: you may find yourself looking for the nearest collection of rollaway toolboxes to ogle; you will look and take note of each brand of tools the technicians are using, while in the past you could have cared less! You may find yourself blurting out questions like; "what kind of rollaway do you have?" or "when does the Snap-On guy come by here?" When driving around town, the sight of a professional tool truck, may cause your vehicle to automatically follow the truck until it stops at its destination! TV or movies that show the use of tools: will become moments of intense focus as you try to ascertain what brand and models of tools are being used. Flea markets and pawn shops may become irresistible destinations; in your continued quest for new tools and your web browser may automatically go to eBay, without you even typing in the URL. As you acquire quality tools, the low quality tools in your toolbox may create emotional "problems" for you, as they do not fulfill your new found "need" for professional grade tools! With this new found insight: they do not meet the new "requirements" and quality that you have realized are available; this situation is not acceptable, it must be dealt with! If you do not have a rollaway toolbox: a strong desire and acquisition of one, will soon follow!
You Have Been Warned! These boards have been known to cause INCURABLE tool addiction! :bounce:

Where was this warning when I joined? I just had a dream about an FH80... and I'm not kidding. Now I must have one.

Truer words have not been spoken. When I first joined I was content with my cheap tools. Now I've been lusting after some Shiney new high-dollar tools to add to my collection. I've started browsing the SO site and have been drooling over many of their tools.

I have spent about $8,000 on tools in the last eight months and bought about 380 pieces. I could have bought the same tools at Sears for about $800.00 but the quality is not the same. For about $8,500 you can buy a 1400 piece Craftsman tool set.

If you want the best tools you must be willing to pay much higher prices.

I don't think there is a word here that is untrue. I think I've done everything you describe. I followed a tool truck for 5 miles once. Initially I bought tools to just get the job done, didn't even pay attention to where they were made. Now it's an obsession. I often times drool over shop toolchests and have asked mechanics what brand of tool they prefer and why. Yes I have noticed the brand of tools in The Fast and the Furious and other movies and TV shows, American Chopper, Overhaulin, Biker Build -Off, American Hotrod, Horsepower TV, etc. The only thing on my Christmas list is tools. Sick, I tell you sick!

Well between this site and my senior installer at Best Buy I'm officially going broke. He has nothing but SO tools and a SO box. I'm always comparing his tools to mine and yes they are better. I get nervous when the SO man pulls up cause I know I'm about to go in debt. Thanks GJ! lol

This is true and I have proof. I just went to see Iron Man and all the tools they used in the movie were Snap On. There were multiple SO boxes in his garage. I counted atleast 3. lol

You forgot to mention auctions but everything else is accurate. Wrenchr said he had the bug before this sight and I also had it incubating in me but this sight sure made it hatch and flourish. Oh well, my wife doesn't mind!!

I agree that this sight makes it flourish. I hadn't bought a new Snap On tool in many years(15 maybe) and I just bought a tf72 and a t55 torx off snappies website. Its making me mad they aren't here:bounce:.

Me too, wrenchr. My case was quite advanced. Looks like there's no cure.

me too

thankfully for my wallet i dont have to buy much of anything of a truck anymore. 25+ years working on various brands of construction eq. and trying to keep whatever POS i was driving at the time running.

back around 1985/86 i bought a new set of kr550/555. got laid off a couple months later. loaded up my boxes in the back of my truck,
when the EX got home from work that nite, she said something to the effect " those aint the same boxes you had a couple years ago." :headscrat
had some 'splainin' to do over that one. :wtf:
funny thing was, she forced me to buy a set of snapon/ harley 90th anv boxes a few years later.

current lady of the house knows about all the $$$ ive spent over the years, she just dont want to hear about it. :lol_hitti

Hey billymade: what were you doing inside my head when you wrote your original post? :D

I once tried to add up what I've spent on tools since joining GJ, but luckily I threw out most of the bills.

And now, I need another roller cab. Or do I sell what I have and buy a whole bigger box? Maybe I should sell some of the tools. Maybe......oh screw it. Yesterday, literally yesterday, I placed two on-line orders for tools. And bought an air ratchet from a tool store. Today.

Yeah, I have had the bug for about 20 years now and this site makes it much worse. Reading about the 4k deals on snappy boxes isn't helping either!

Trying to find the drooling emoticon....

Actually I disagree with many of the assertions of the OP.

Nothing wrong with "wanting" tool truck brand tools but to label other tool brands as cheap ie- inferior and not likely up to efficiently doing the job is ludicrous.

This kind of thinking reminds me of jr high school clicks. The right clothes, hairstyles, shoes, etc is what you needed to fit in with the cool kids.

I have a little bit of everything in my tool boxes to include tool truck brands and with very few exceptions they all are equally capable of efficiently doing whatever task I have at hand. I started wrenching back in the 1970s and been around way to long to buy into the notion of one brand and one brand only is what is needed.

This is so true! After finding this website by tool purchasing increased a fair amount. :bounce:

I did find although that I wasn't spending huge amounts of money due to the fact that I was constantly looking for deals. Every week I would check the local classifieds, local tools store websites and looking for anything that was on sale. My mind set changed from "Ah I don't really need that tool, when would I use it? to "hmm this might come in useful one day...ooh and it's on sale!"

while i agree with fordguy for the most part, i am an addict too. i think the OP was making the point that you end up feeling that your middle of the road tools are inferior in some way to the top quality stuff, not that the tools arent actually capable of the jobs.

and i know exactly what he feels. although i have had a serious love for tools and garage stuff in general for a long time, since i came here, i can definitely notice a huge difference in how i look at what i have, and what i WANT. not what i need necessarily. i KNOW what i have works just fine, and there is no need to get those new ratchets or wrenches, but i definitely want em a lot more now....

Started cleaning up my garage, office and shop after reading the Grunge Garage thread.

Started stopping in at pawnshops, and pawing thru the filthy old tools in buckets after the Yard Sale, and Pawnshop finds threads.

Can't miss an estate sale. (And now I'm bringing home rusty gold too.)

Can't pass a yard sale. (Never know when lightning will strike. Someday I'll walk in on a retired machinist, and buy the whole garage.)

All because of this site. :p

It's a lot of fun and the good is out-weighing the bad, but there is a little bit of the truth in all the joking...

I've abandoned my other internet forums, 'cause I don't have time for GJ and them :D

This is also one of the most positive and friendly forums on the whole net. Almost no haters, no trolls, great threads, helpful people. All in all, AWESOME.

Very glad to be here.

I purchased USA made craftsman stuff before this thread.

But this thread made me purchased my first Sanp on ratchet.

I always loved tools though.
