Seasons Greetings everyone,

I am visiting my brother, and have a question on the vintage S-K machinist tool chest he has inherited from his late father in law.

Picture below...is this the original red color of this chest? I cannot find another example on-line that is red in color. One clue may be that the latch is also red, not just bare metal...we cannot see ANY sign of the classic S-K green inside the box, on the inside of the drawers, etc...and any of the chips in the paint do not indicate any other color underneath...

Also, I'm thinking '50s-60's vintage - any input?

Thanks!

Dave

It looks repainted. the latch and handle should have no paint. Most SK stuff is green textured paint.

A couple of beers and further investigation has revealed that it was in fact originally the S-K green. Someone did a really nice job repainting this chest, but some of the inner cavity still shows the green original paint.

Mystery solved!

With that logo I would say 1958-1964

SK TOOLS in a diamond was 1934-1957

Those earlier ones had a textured wrinkle green finish(almost like some bedliners) instead of a hammered/orange peel green like the newer ones.

I'm confused: that one is in a diamond :dunno:

Is there a handy web site for the years different SK logos were used?

Had to blow the image up to see the TOOLS in the script.

Indeed... before 1957

Did S-K actually bend the metal and make these machinist chests back in the day or did they contract these out to someone else to manufacture?
