With 13' of space from floor to ceiling I was thinking of mounting a tire rack up high on the wall and want to be sure I have the proper framing in place for it later on.

What have some of you built or seen?

I just installed the Hyloft 1000 tire rack last week. Picked it up from Amazon. Seems to be a nice heavy unit. The rack mount is drilled for studs but you could redrill it as necessary. I mounted into concrete walls using anchors. So far do good. Nice having the tires up our of the way.

I have three of them. All the same, purchased one used, and two new. They are from Canadian Tire. Work great, no trouble holding heavy mounted tires on steel or aluminum wheels from various Caprices, Cadillacs, and Roadmaster. Lag bolted into studs, locations checked carefully with an edge finding stud locator.

Home made out of 2x4's. Stores 15-20 tires three rows high in a space not much more than a refrigerator takes up and is free standing. No need to bolt it to anything.

When I moved into my house I needed maximum storage in my small single car garage and new the space under the "rack" style tire storage was wasted so I designed my own. I built some custom cabinets with tire storage on top. I used heavy wall galvanized steel pipe for the tire storage, mounted on top of cabinets made from 3/4 ply. I mounted the cabinets using 8 - 10 lag bolts per set of 4 tires. I have tire storage for 12 tires...2 sets of snows for mine and wifes car and a set of race tires. I'll dig up a photo if I can.

What would you use to anchor something like this to a block wall?

I found a picture of the storage I describe above

The doors on the storage hinge upward and have a strut to keep them open.

A quick Google search came up with this. http://www.confast.com/products/concrete-sleeve-anchor.aspx#sleeve-anchor

I would mount a French cleat rail to the wall and then mount the cabinets to the rail. If I were to do my cabinets again, I would use a French cleat. It makes hanging the cabinets so much easier. I did use a French cleat system for my loose garden tools, ladder and extension cords etc...
