36 x 48 Garage Makeover

A while back I bought a new place with an attached 2 car garage and a 6 car detached garage with a paint booth (actually a room with a ventilation fan). The detached garage is 36' wide by 48' deep.

The garage was finished with sheet rock, taped and painted all white. The previous owner did body work in there and let me tell you it was a dusty mess when I moved in.

The paint booth is covered with OSB and painted white. The light fixtures are nothing more than 7 100 watt light bulbs. Not sure how he saw to do any work in there.

There are three floor drains on the bays closest to the door which seems nice except that the garage floor has to slope towards the drains. Not sure if I like that or not yet.

Here are pics right after moving in.

Two windows on the south wall will provide good natural light exposure year round.

The first order of business is to add plumbing to the detached garage. I want to be able to wash up before going in the house and also have my own toilet so I don't have to track into the house all the time.

I decided to put the plumbing on the wall of the paint booth in the corner. This way the plumbing in on an interior wall (freeze proof) and it won't take up a lot of otherwise usable space. I figure I would put a toilet in a separate room and have a large wash tub sink in the main area for cleaning things and washing up.

I had to saw cut the concrete in the corner for the plumbing and dig under the foundation for the water line.

It is about 130 feet to the septic tank so I had to start pretty shallow with the sewer pipe.

The county made me encase the sewer pipe in a larger pipe because it was directly above the water line coming from the house.

Here is where it ties into the septic tank.

Nice big space . . . . more like MASSIVE as it has all your moving stuff in there and barely looks touched!!

Show us pics of the paint room along with outside shot of the overall detached garage.

Congrats on new place and have fun making it your own!

I removed the OSB from the paint booth wall. That is the wall that will have the plumbing and electrical. I decided to also run a water line over to the corner of the paint booth and install a hose bib. This puts the water central to the shop area.

This shot shows the wall opened up. I added lots of outlets to 2 110V circuits and a 50 amp 220V on the paint booth side.

Plumbing for the sink and toilet. Also an outlet for the mini fridge.

While I had the wall opened up I went ahead and replaced the paint booth swing door with a pocket door. The copper air line in the wall will be moved so that it goes into the paint room. I have a plan for that as you'll see.

Nice looking space, I'm jealous. Lot of potential there.

By the way, be careful with those boxes. If I remember correctly, those are the type you're not supposed to destroy.

Great shop you have there and I see hot rod work is under way, more pics of the 61 are in order. And by all means, DO NOT DESTROY THOSE BOXES. I don't know what the repricutions would be but why take the chance.

I have not and will not EVER destroy those boxes. They are actually really good reusable boxes. They collapse down and fit into the lid.

Any details on your engine hoist? I'd love to put one of those in my barn.

The hoist is just a harbor freight special. I mounted an engine lift plate to the top of it and used a couple of chain hooks to attach it to the trolley.

The trolley came from Grainger. It is adjustable to different size beams

The beam is an 8" x 4" x 5/16" flange S beam. I got it at my local steel distributor. Its 23' long. 25' was the max span for that size beam to support the weight.

I have taken the time to draw out how I want to layout the shop on the computer. Here are the layouts.

This is an aerial view of the entire building. The red lines are tube lights. The paint booth will become a wood working/dirty room.

This is the wall on the outside of the paint booth. I am planning a built-in workbench using wood cabinets that I bought a long time ago at Home Depot (Mills Pride).

I am going to use a harbor freight toolbox and build it in to the workbench. On the far right will be a mini fridge.

pmilin your garage looks like it will be great when you get done. What program did you use to do the renderings?

This is going great. What weight will the beam handle? Im looking to do the same thing.

The trolley and hoist are 1/2 ton. I don't lift that heavy. I think my engine is about 500 lbs. I tested it out and the beam barely flinches with 500 pounds on it. If I need to lift something really heavy I could always add one of those basement floor jacks under it in the middle as a temporary support.

Assembled the cabinets and mounted them to the wall. Also built-in the toolbox and installed the counter top (formica). I am using a router to cut the edge of the counter top and am going to screw on a piece of extruded aluminum angle to give it a strong edge.

Put up the peg board and bordered it with the same aluminum angle. I recessed a power strip into the peg board just above the back splash. Started laying out the tile for around the sink.

I put some tools on the peg board. Not sure how I want to arrange them quite yet.

I installed one of those deep wash tub sinks.

I bought a bunch of old shelving from a bed and bath store that went out of business. The shelving is wood covered with that white vinyl stuff similar to the cabinets I used. I cut up a few of the shelves to make pull-out drawers in the cabinet.

I installed a hose reel behind the wall in the paint room. I still need to box it in.

I also installed a pocket door for the bathroom. This allowed me to make that room smaller so that I didn't have to account for a swinging door.

Lots of great work you're doing!! Several ideas I'm hoping to steal for my future use like the trimmed out pegboard, built-in air hose reel, and pocket door.

Keep the impressive pics coming. We like!

The unique thing about it is that I put blocks behind the smaller tilt bins so that they are all flush in front.

Fantastic attention to detail. I can truly appreciate that kind of precision. Your place looks awesome, and I'm sure it allows you to get a lot of work done in there.

Wow, great job. I love the hidden air hose reel and the color scheme including what you did with the stripe. The whole place looks fantastic.

Love the idea & thank you!

Just had one sized for my barn - going to have to go with one of my own.

Great makeover! How old is the building? It doesn't look aged in the first pics. You are definitely adding some slick touches to make it your own; well done.

Thanks for all the compliments.

To answer some questions:

Tilt bins - I got most of them from a local hardware store that is now out of business. When I decided to make that tilt bin enclosure I had to buy more of them. I bought the rest from some place on the Internet. I think Global Industrial was the company.

Yes I suffer from OCD too.

ToolBox - The Harbor Freight toolbox was special ordered as black. I actually bought two of them. I used the other one for the attached garage make over that I did a while back. I did't know about GJ back then so I didn't post it. I am not sure if they are still available in black.

The building was built in 1999. The inside was drywalled and sprayed all white. I have worked on the outside as well but didn't post that part. Maybe I should as it looks quite different now.
