I wanted to introduce myself, thank everyone on GJ for all of the great postings, and share my new build.
I have been needing/wanting to build a shop for a long time, but wasnt getting to it. Instead I have rental space and have made the attached three car garage completely unusable for vehicles (wife translation = mess).
My bride threw down the gauntlet about the garage, and I offered up a shop as a solution and to get me out of her hair. To my amazement she took the bait and now I am lucky enough to get to do a new build, and reno the attached garage (woohoo two great projects).
The decision was made to go with a steel pole building with a suburban feel for the shop, to place it across the pond, and size was limited to 48x63 due to terrain issues. I wantted to be able to drive through, so placed 14x14 overhead doors on each end, and used scissor trusses to add height to the ceiling.
I office at home, so we decided to add a 12x18 office to the new build (so I can have a commute to complain about), add in a 12x18 storage room, and put on a porch to have a place to sit with a cold beverage. This left 36x63 for the shop.
I got the site prepped in late July. The dirt work was a real bear as the drought left the moisture level so low we couldnt get good compaction. Pumped a lot of water to the build sit and the borrow. The lifts went slow, but we got it done.
Put in the driveway. Its a little steep, but manageable. Not a lot of options, so I am making do.
The steel delivery came, but I couldnt convince the driver to go down to the build site. He unloaded by the road on top of the hill, leaving us to move the heavy pallets of steel down to the site.
The drivers for the lumber/trusses and rock didnt give it a second thought and dumped their loads right on the pad.
The crew showed up the same day and dropped off equipment, then began the build the next day.
Placing the poles
Girts and trusses
Trusses and purlins (recessed)
Lean-to and roof
Walls going up
Shell complete, the crew only has the ceiling left
Ceiling is up, with 6mil poly and R30 blown in above.
Time to call in the concrete crew and get the slab, approaches, sidewalk, and porch poured.
Overhead door contractor and electrician dispatched.
My brother and I put in the Dannmar 10ACX, and the electricians wired it up along with getting the lights in.
I then got the storage room and office framed, insulation up (used 5ft and 4 ft wide rolls of R19, hung on 4 inch nails, applied girts on the inside, then covered with 6 mil poly), and got my brother and a friend to come help hang steel liner.
I decided to go with Fastpipe from rapidair for my airlines, as well as a 5HP Bendpak TriMax as a compressor.
Then it got cold, so I installed an OmegaII radiant heater 140,000BTU (It is overkill, I let the HVAC guy talk me into a larger unit and it is more than I need).
Moved some of the shelving from one of the rentals, so I can get stuff off the floor.
Got so tired of working ON the shop, I took a break and decided to work IN the shop. Put the winter shoes on, changed oil, plugs, and other general maint. It was a short distraction, but satisfying just the same.
(I did post an album, if you want to see larger pictures)
There is a lot of work to be done yet, but it is finally feeling like I can see the end of the tunnel on the shop build. The wife is starting to get anxious about the attached garage project, as she says I have to have that complete by May.
I appreciate the information on GJ, and hope to add the same level of value that I have extracted (lurking).
