They got great reviews and because they go up to 1 1/4" I figured I'd give them a try. I wasn't disappointed, especially for the price. There is no metric equivalent to this set regrettably.
For a comparison I laid the 7/8" side by side with an SK and Wright of the same size. If you look at the thumbnails you'll see the Northern Tool is about one head longer than the SK, so I'm not sure if that counts as 'Jumbo', but it is a noticeable difference.
The full polish on the wrenches is quite good; not quite up to par with the SK but good and shiny. The text stamping on the wrench is decent, could be a little deeper but not bad.
The box end's radius is approximately as thick as that of the SK. One point in the SK's favor is that the taper leading to the box end is more gradual, which leads me to think it'll be stronger at what's traditionally a weak spot in a wrench. The SK is also noticeably heavier than the NT, with the Wright heavier still.
The Northern Tool's box end is no slouch but again, we're talking a $35 set of wrenches and some compromises will be made.
Neither the SK nor the NT wrench are as thick at the box end as the Wright, which is my favorite wrench. If you ever need to strike the end of a wrench with a hammer to get a stubborn bolt moving, use a Wright because it will take it and laugh. FWIW you can often find good deals on Wright sets on Ebay, not $35 but under $100. They are wonderful, tough wrenches.
The NT wrench roll is a pretty solid canvas backing with individual plastic sheeting over each wrench to protect from scratches and grime. I was pleasantly surprised with it, along with the wrench set in general. If you need a set around the house or in the truck I think you'll be happy.
These are of course made in China so if it's USA or bust for you then look elsewhere-- and I respect that, but having said it these are the nicest Chinese wrenches I've seen.
The reviews at NT are uniformly positive, some gushing, which leads me to think an editor is busy at work there. Some reviews even claim they're better than Snap-Ons or other tool truck brands; I don't know what those people are thinking (or smoking) but they certainly are not. No need for hyperbole. They are good wrenches and a great set for $35, or even the $50 they ordinarily go for.
