Hi Guys,

I picked up this monster this weekend. 40 bucks. 2HP, 10", 18.5 amps, 1725 rpm, 1979. Runs damn good. Got new wheels with it also. And it has that cool light and rickety stand on casters.

I can't find any info on these. One thread says blatant knock off of name brand stuff. I'd like some more info on it. Manuals?

It's missing the side covers, and looking at 10" grinders, I can not find any similar, this link shows what they are. http://www.purplewave.com/cgi-bin/mnlist.cgi?080715A/2457

Thanks!

I'm not knocking that grinder at all, it looks like a hell of machine with specs to back it up. I have always know duracraft as just another name applied to hf quaity tools. I don't see any USA markings on the tag so I would think that one is imported as well so I doubt replace parts willl be easy to find. Still, for $40 looks nice.

Totally agree. For 40 bucks, I thought I'd take the chance. And it does hog big metal. So that's good. I'm gonna tear her down and do a recondition/resto. Repack/replace bearings and clean and paint. Going to find or build new side covers.

My buddy and I just had the convo after p/u this, and were wondering if the "knock off brand quality" was better in 1979 or better now? I bought a Ryobi bench grinder on black friday just to have for a complete beater, and I returned it the next day as that thing would stall on wire wheeling an old hammer head. POS! But this monster, albeit 2hp, seems like real power and higher quality. What are your guy's thoughts?

I think it comes down to what quailty the knock off company wants to put out. Take duralast ratchets from autozone for example, those couldn't be more of a SO knock off and look at how many people here sware by those. You know the said thing, ryobi isn't really a knock company, many of their products are private lable for oh lets say craftsman.

Import from 1979, probably came from Taiwan, not China. Typically a better product, at least as far as machine tools. A 10" 2 HP grinder was probably targeted to commercial users, not a home owner, so probably better also. Where is the switch located? The missing side covers should be easy to fab up, make a cardboard pattern, cut out of 1/8" plate. Drill a clearance hole for the nut, and either leave as is, or find a cap of some sort to weld over the hole. I'd probably just leave the hole myself, KISS rule.

Yes, 2hp 10", industrial/commercial target. As far as the switch, it is located on an actual switch right under the bench grinder with a 110 outlet. The PO Machine shop must have busted the original stand, b/c they fabbed up that 1/4" stand you can see, and the switch used to be on the original. EDIT: I will redo all those scary connections.

Making the side covers will be a fun and rewarding, but a time consuming project. I can pull the existing sides off now and flip them backwards to get the insides/outsides from left to right- follow? lol.

I think I saw a Duracraft elsewhere before that was tagged Taiwan. Either way, this thing don't care where it's from. It's big and it means business. Notice the guards are dang near 1/4"! I'm impressed with the quality, personally.

I would really like to use it side by side with a Baldor of equal size/power and see what the diff is. Considering I could buy 30+ of these for the price of the Baldor...lol.

Good looking grinder, especially for $40.

Thanks 87Pomona. I know you are near me, and we seem to always see the same CL postings. If you ever want me to keep an eye peeled for you on something or do a local p/u, no problem. PM if you ever want.
