Hello Guys,

Well I thought I would start a thread on my new garage build. Here is the backstory.

This was my Father in Laws dream garage. After retiring from the military for 33 years he finally started on it in April of 2009. He had the slab poured. It took 2 more years for him to save up for the rest of the build.

Summer of 2011 I helped him put up the walls and roof trusses. He hired out the roof and the stucco and rock on the outside.

DSCN3085-vi.jpg

DSCN3128-vi.jpg

DSCN3204-vi.jpg

DSCN3229-vi.jpg

Fall of 2011 he was diagnosed with throat cancer. It slowed down the build as he did Chemo and radiation. In the spring of 2012 he finally got some basic electrical and doors installed. After battling the cancer for a year he got a brain tumor and tragically we lost him this past September. He was a great man and I learned alot from him.

I felt it only right that I finish the garage and use it as that is what he would have wanted.

My mother in law has given me full rein of the garage and how I want to finish out the inside. The garage is 30’d x 60’w x 10'5"h in the middle with a 6’ rollup side door, two 16’x7’ doors, and a 12’x7’ door. My father in law built a 10’x16’ room in the corner where the walk in door is. I think he planned to have his tools in here and some workbenches. I felt the room was too small to do anything with so I tore it down and built a new wall dividing the garage into two spaces. You guessed it one side garage and the other woodshop.

The woodshop is the left side with the walk in door, 12' x 7' door and side door. It measures 23'5" x 28'6".

The garage side has the two 16' doors. It will measure 34'7"x 28'6"

Here is the outside finished

Some inside shots as of right now.

Here is the 10'x16' room I tore down

The room gone!
DSCN6201-vi.jpg

New wall. Left side will be Woodshop. Right side will be garage. The door is a for a 5ft double wide.
DSCN6205-vi.jpg

Here is my current plan:
Finish electrical.(add more sockets, some 220v sockets, more lighting, garage door opener wiring, switched socket for air scrubber with timer, wiring for DC blast gates. Wiring for audio)
Make an opening for two seperate A/C's for each side of shop.
West end of roof decking doesnt have solar backing. Want to install reflectex
Insulate roof and walls
Drywall and finish
Install 15,000-18,000 btu A/C units in both sides.
Paint garage side with blue bottom half, black strip, and gloss white on top.
Paint Woodshop side a semi gloss off white. Possibly line walls with knotty pine or cedar

Here is an up to date shot of my current garage. It is a little messy I haven't done anything out there since Sept. All of this will move to the new woodshop.

I have made a very crude layout in excel. To give you an idea.
View attachment 235604

I haven't finished the garage side layout yet but it will have three 3' metal cabinets, a 5' wood cabinet, a beverage fridge, parts washer, 15' of workbench with cabinets above, sandblasting cabinet, and all the usual garage stuff. I hope to have a 2 post lift as well.

This will be somewhat of a slow build as I work 50 hours a week have a 4 and 6 yr old boys and all the family stuff that comes with it.

As soon as the garage side is done I plan to start a frame off restoration on the 64' Chevy stepside you see in the photos. It was my father in laws and my wife inherited it. It has been sitting outside for the last 10 years and I got some rolling tires on it and got the engine running so I can move it around at least.

All comments and suggestions welcome. I am trying to think of everything I might need in the future as far as wiring so I can install it now before the walls are finished.

Sorry to hear of our FIL's passing. Sounds like another great man who started his dream late and then wasted time to CA therapy - much like my friend and neighbor. The shop is beautiful.

Thanks guys for the comments. I have done alot of the rewiring in the garage but as it is very boring didn't take any pictures. I do have a very cool update on the 64' truck but won't have a picture till tomorrow.

Thanks for the comments guys. Well here is the update I promised. A friend of my Father in Law's found an original bench seat out of a 64' Chevy P/U and had his neighbor (who does custom interiors) reupholster it and new foam. Can't wait to put it in the truck.

Worked on finishing my Lathe workbench I started last year. I made all the false drawer fronts, got them sanded and put the first coat of stain on them. I am finishing it to match my main workbench. Once I have the false fronts done and mounted I will start on the inside organization. Which will consist of dividers and custom cutouts for my lathe tools.

Trimming false fronts with Hard Maple.

I love the models. Your drawers and drawer fronts turned out really nice as well. There's something about the attention to detail in cabinetry and work bench design of a woodworker's shop that is enviable. Mine on the other hand is a lot of on-hand plywood covered in metal dust! Nice shop.

I'm a former patternmaker and those models are spectacular! The model steam train is un-real.

You are commended

Great looking garage and projects.
What did you use on bottom of cabinet to hold tools, looks like florist foam.

It is the flocking you can buy from Woodcraft of Rockler. It comes in many different colors. It comes with a paint that is the same color as the flocking. You paint it and the spray the flocking on. It works real well but it does get dirty.

The bottom of the drawer has 2 1/4' pieces of MDF that fit the drawer. The top one I traced out the tools and finger holes and then cutout with a jigsaw. Glue them together and then put the flocking on. I didn't take any in progress pics but have one of the layout. When I make the ones for the lathe tools I will do a WIP.

Thanks guys for all the comments. I wish I was working on my next scale model, but have several unfinished projects to do first. The lathe workbench first, and then lighting above the lathe, and then another tool cabinet to go next to the lathe workbench.

If you want to see more of my projects and the phases my garage has gone through I have all of it on my Flickr link below.

For those interested in the Steam train it is made of Walnut and Maple. It took 102 hours to build, 15 hours to put 3 coats of poly on it with a build time of 11 months. It is 38" Long ,5.75" Tall, and 3.75" wide. To see the complete build from start to finish: http://www.woodworkforums.com/f201/1949-reading-steam-freight-locomotive-142879/

Second coat of stain on the drawer fronts. Tomorrow I will start the coats of poly on them and the custom drawer organizers.

Bizkit I don't sell anything I make. I have had several people want to buy the Scania. If I sold them I wouldn't eve know what to ask for them. I have seen cheap China knock offs scale models made in a factory go for $200-$300.

Well I wasn't able to put a coat of poly on the drawer fronts because they weren't dry enough. So I decided to start making the tool holders and organizers for the drawers.

I was going to build tool holders for both my sets of wood chisels when I realized I could just take the lid off of the boxes they came in, seal them, and put some flocking and bam tool holders.

The full size set.

DSCN6306 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

A coat of shellac to seal them.

DSCN6307 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

The flocking supplies.

DSCN6310 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

DSCN6309 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Taped off, painted with adhesive and flocked. The glue is an enamel base paint that is the same color as the flocking. In this case hunter green.

DSCN6311 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

DSCN6312 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

All finished excess wiped off.

DSCN6314 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

DSCN6315 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

I made a box with divided compartments to go across the back of the drawer. Milled up some 1/4" stock pine. Used 1/8" hardboard for the bottom.

DSCN6316 by bjohnson388, on Flickr
Box nailed together.

DSCN6317 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Together in the drawer. Its a tight fit so nothing will slide around.

DSCN6318 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

DSCN6319 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

I had time to work on the small set as well.

DSCN6320 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

Same process.

DSCN6322 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

DSCN6323 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

I layed out the rest of the drawer for all measuring tools, chuck jaws, and lathe tools. This will be next.

DSCN6325 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

In case you are wondering I couldn't put the tools in the holder yet as you are suppose to wait 10-15 hours before using. Believe me it was killing me.:D

After the two top drawers are done I was thinking about starting on my mechanics toolbox. Here is a pic I have for inspiration.

I like the color of the maple workbench doors. I'm currently building out a bathroom vanity out of hard maple as well but am undecided on how to finish them. What stain/finish did you use for those? Thanks.

Hello Skippy I used Minwax stain(Dark Walnut) and Semi Gloss poly for these drawers. 2 coats of stain and 3 coats of poly.

Got the first coat of poly on last night.

Thank you for the comments. I thought long and hard about putting the wall up. I know at some point for some crazy project I will wish I hadn't but in the overall aspect I know having the woodshop seperate from the garage is the right thing to do. The wood dust gets everywhere even with Dust collection and an Air Scrubber. And on the other side all the grinding, welding, painting doesn't mix well with the woodworking. I am limited to having only 5 vehicles garaged but that might be a good thing!

Thank you guys for the comments. Rieferman I still consider myself an amateur. My dad is the one who has skills.

I made a tool holder for my lathe measuring tools. Its two pieces of 1/4" MDF.

Layout

Drew the outlines of where to cut and also for the finger holes.

DSCN6334 by bjohnson388, on Flickr

A jig saw, coping sawing and lots of filing and everything is cutout.

Put a coat of shellac on it to seal. Will apply the adhesive and fibers tomorrow.

Nice work, wish I had a fraction of your wood working skills. Awesome work and nice garage. Gotta be nice having a separate work area.
