Just purchased a new pneumatic grease gun by mac tools. Figure it is a good time to ask is what kind of grease does everyone prefer in the their grease guns?

I am looking for greasing the zerks on my jeep and lawn mower. Some general and that can be purchased locally.

Most Napa stores are Lucas dealers and I love the Red N' Tacky grease from Lucas. It holds up well, but if I had a Schaeffer's dealer close I wouldn't mind trying some of their grease as well.

Good to hear that. My home Depot caries that.

Castol Pyroplex Blue is hands down the best grease I have ever used. Difficult to locate Once you try it you will be a believer. The 4x4 forums love it, very water resistant.

I use kendall blue or amsoil. Thats what we stock at work, mostly kendall lately. But I like the amsoil better, its thicker and works real well to lube my guns.

I don't think it matters. There are different kinds of grease. Now when it comes down to the different kinds of grease I don't think it matters. I have used almost all of them and the only difference I have noticed is I like grease that isn't clear I think it holds up better with heat. I have not noticed anything break due to a grease failure besides not being greased.

really have no preference,

any grease is better than NO grease at all.

i really dont like the "red tacky grease",of any brand, it's way too heavy and sticky for cold weather.
last air powered grease gun i had really didnt like it at all...

very cold morning, and the housing split after 5 pumps

Yeah, some are making a mountain out of rat turds over grease...:wtf:

for the record, I buy my grease a harbor Freight on sale or with a 20% off coupon.
My customers do not know the difference and could give a rats *** less what kind of grease I used.

I agree 100% but it is important to use the same kind of grease because of Compatibility issues. I remember when synthetic grease became the majority share holder and we had an excavator with some old grease hat reacted poorly and all the grease hardened up and wore out the sumitomo and boom knuckle. it was a very costly mistake. http://www.machinerylubrication.com/Read/1865/grease-compatibility

Saying all greases are equal is a little like saying all ratchets are equal.

I like a lithium complex grease with a very heavy base oil. Morey's and Valvoline Cerulean from NAPA are great.

Pick a brand and a flavor, then stick with it, and keep the grease

in the parts that need it, not the grease gun. Do not make the

mistake of thinking all greases are compatible, they aren't. Don't

mix lithium and molybdenum greases.

Uncle Bob (Who has been using Valvoline #633 exclusively and

almost forever, well, for about 40 years now.)

So what happens if you do mix two different types of grease? Does it not lubricate well or ruin the part by corrosion or something ?

They just simply don't mix due to the different base properties. It's like mixing beer with milk in a cup.

I do facility maintenance (24 yrs) I used to do all the service and repairs then we got a new boss who bid the work out to whatever company would provide the cheapest service contract for the year - techs would come out and lube everything with whatever grease they had... I tried to tell them but the techs would just say "grease is grease" and "it's better than no grease" and look at me like I had 2 heads .. a bunch of burned up equipment proved me right in the long run.

You start mixing bases and bad things CAN happen

That is standard thickness rating that most application call for. There is a ngli 1 that can be used in cold weather since it is thinner.

It can turn into a "Grease Concrete" or Turn into "Grease Water"...which is not good either way.

Personally I use the JD Polyurea...not super expensive, easily obtainable, great quality. All around couldnt ask for better.

If one is a specialist there is no reason not to tailor grease to the job. I bought somje of the super blue just for wheel bearings, easy to spot recent work and if I was a tube or 2 guy that would be fine. Texaco Starplex is what we been using but now the jobber is in some Cheveron products etc, the only reason I buy it there is convenience and sales deal.

I am a farmer without an air gun, about once a year I have to go thru a dozen tubes in short order but the rest of the time about like everyone else in light fleet, use a little so we use manual guns, 3 of them, 1 with red starplex for things that go round and round and wheel brgs, u joints,,, 2 othere loaded with Starplex moly 2,, real sticky black for chassis, bushing, dirty stuff. Steering parts.

I havent seen an air-gun in years on any farm :D ... Everybody has a Lincoln or Alemite Cordless...the Milwaukee's are coming on strong too. If I had to get one it would be the Milwaukee...

I can’t comment on the lubricating qualities of various brands, I suspect the worst grease is pretty darn good these days. I can tell you that some greases hold their oil much better than others. I noticed this a few years ago when I had different brands in several grease guns. In my limited comparison, Valvoline was the worst at bleeding oil, the gun was constantly dripping out the bottom so I sat it in a coffee can to see how much oil would collect. Over the course of a few months, a few tablespoons dripped out. I did the same thing with Mobil and Lubriplate and only got a few drops during the same time period.

That black stuff is so sticky, its got a different kind of "tack" to it. We live on filthy grimy salty sandy with a generous amount of clay and rock thown in roads. I am sure shielding, grommets have got better but with extended service in some cases the stuff still isnt dried right out, still some stuck around to shed water.

I know in my golf carts it has seemed to stick around, took one apart for some spring work and all the joints had seen a year and still not totally dried out, heat isnt a problem for that stuff its cold wet dirty, friction wearing and forcing it out. Its got to the point I give it a pump once a year during other work, maybe a squirt here and there if its convenient.

It sees stuff wears longer, I take better care of it and have reduced a lot of wear tear items too but car engines, got a Windstar, wore the truck right out with 1 fuel inj and a set of plugs, cleaned the iac once. I put an alt and a battery in it but the engine prolly a belt. Couple of air filters. Still runs.

I just don't have the moving equipment, I haven't used a half a tube in a month, all my own stuff is tight, lightly loaded, low service, even the busy stuff a half a tube a pop a couple times a week. I use a lever gun for that with the black.

If I had a lot of rolling stock you bet, would have my super duty battery luber. Would pay for itself in a busy week easy. As it is my longest job is a handful of times 5 minutes about a couple dozen fittings I just don't want the added equipment to pump 20 tubes a year. The use is so sporadic, haven't used a gun in maybe a week and then it was 2 pumps.

As it is I sent someone to a sale and they came back with wrong product, am on the lookout for penetrating spray at the right price. Its like tape measures, we use them daily. Liq Wrench is ok, I think I scored it for 2.29 the last time I got a dozen and case of CRC I scored for around 2 a can, I like that ok.

Spray in aerosol is a convenience I will pay for like paper towels and foam cups as well as a few paper plates. I need to work on some can holders for rugged use, we suffer some broken cans but the ability to apply light oil to common fastener during installation is an effort well rewarded, Don't got to get carried away with the never seize but a shot of bull piss on threads does wonders on getting it tight and being able to get it loose, both ways.

I am not sure the moly 11 is wheel brg rated, the blue and the red are. As was pointed out any of them are good, I think possibly a place a career guy could actually see improvement over motor oils etc,,, but chassis wear, it just "looks" like it stays in better and longer and never wear out a replacement part we can grease.

I got one steering part on one tractor I am fussy with a pump on each end when it flies by, I really suspect most of them could get the service life from if I never greased it again. My service truck, have not greased it since I drove it in the winter several years ago. Looks like it was done recent.
