this seems to be a topic of interest. It certainly is for me after 8 years hourly getting switched to flag time during the slow period. the shop I work at is very slow right now, (this time of year always is) its a small town and we rely heavily on our customers who farm and ranch. We have no service writer, and the boss tells you to find your own work. Many times on farm trucks book time is out the window..its gonna be a fucked up mess by the time they bring it in. "its been making noise for a while" yeah, because you drove untill it melted the pinion bearing! The point is, I do not screw the customer, but I do not work for free. Tell me what book time is to find and repair 20 wires that rodents have chewed up? Then test drive, and watch data on the scanner to make sure the repair is complete! I document all this on my work orders..so far no complaints. if the boss says "we cant charge the customer that!"
