Snap-On 3/8" ratchet. Used it to pull back a serp belt tensioner, as I finished up I dropped it. I remember hearing it hit the undertray and thinking I needed to pick the car back up to get it. Got busy and forgot until the car was gone.

I lose two or three #2 Phillips screwdrivers a year, at least one Olfa knife, wire strippers and crimpers get left behind all the time, and vice grips, I don't know how many vice grips I've lost, I just buy the new four pack every fall when they're on sale.

Sometimes customers bring them back, but not often. Most of them consider it a bonus, and some believe it reflects poor workmanship, as someone on another thread here said "if the tech doesn't care about his tools why would he care about your car".

Sometimes I forget things behind, when replacing a whole roof I end up with tools from one end of a motorhome to the other.

Recently I misplaced a screw driver that has two more screw drivers in it. Found it a week later in my extra box. Few years ago I lost a nice enough soft handle husky ratcbet and a durlast 14mm deep socket. Didn't realize it till a month later. Think they went in the truck I scrapped. ?

I always put the job on hold and find the tool I drop as soon as I drop it. I've worked too hard and spent hard earned money on my tools to just forget about them. Never been questioned about an extra 10 min on thier bill but try and sneak an extra 100 bucks for a ratchet on the bill and they will raise an eyebrow lol.

Other than the vise grips that I thought I lost last summer, I don't believe I have lost anything for a long time.

I lost a whole set of metric deep well sockets, a rachet, extension, some plyers, a much needed socket driver, and other mics. items.
I went out and bought another socket driver set and was really getting miffed about loosing all my deep well metrics! Who would forget to put that back after using my garage?
I have several Mustang friends who like to use my garage and I like having friendly wrench parties.
I was actually feeling a little sorry for the guy that found it under their seat or engine bay, knowing they were denying me the opportunity to use my sockets.
I was in the store the other day and almost bought another set too.
Well, while working on my spoiler on my car this past week and needing that socket set, the light went "ON".
I remembered I put some tools in my cleaning bag I keep in my Mustang when me and the wife took a road trip to Texas last fall.
I opened the bag and sure enough, all the tools I was missing were in that bag!!!
Boy, I was such a goof for not remembering I had too those tools with me on that trip!
It is so nice to have my old Craftsman sockets back, along with all the other tools in my toolbox, I am a much happier camper!!!

Someone using my tools lost a 3/8" Mac 19mm impact socket. I'm still a bit ticked about it and he paid me for it. I've worked on hundreds of cars and never lost a socket..

'We' dont lose tools, 'we' gain tools. we got 76 wrenches and some other stuff for $15 yesterday and another $15 for an equal number of sockets. I havent looked at the sockets yet but all the wrenches are good ol' Made in USA in the 1920s, 30s, 40s and 50s.

Recently

1-6pt 10mm socket
1-12pt 10mm socket.

I buy them in bulk.

Also recently I was working on a car, got sent by the boss to pick someone up and while I was gone the other mechanic put the tire back on and pulled it out of the shop. 2 hours later went looking for my cordless light and realized it was hanging under the car the other mechanic pulled out and he did not take it off. By the time I got a hold of the customer she had been driving around for a few hours, brought the car back and luckily it was still hanging there.

Wait what? Lose a tool, add time to customers bill? Try and sneak 100 bucks for a ratchet on the bill, are you serious?

Thought I lost a 4mm Snap-on hex bit socket. We were working on my buddies car and just used a fuel pressure tester which we rented from Autozone. We returned from autozone, and realized the socket was missing. I figured one of us set it inside of the case for the pressure tester and donated it to Autozone. By the way, his car runs fine yet the pressure gauge read zero PSI. Stupid piece of junk. My friend suggested calling Autozone to see if the socket was in there. I said don't even bother calling, if the socket is in there, that person will keep it anyways. The socket was actually hiding on the end of an extension laying in the wrong spot in my toolbox. When friends come over and tinker with me, they never put things back in the right spot!

My mind. Oh wait you said recently :D

I don't know how I can do it but I can lose a screw driver without dropping it and without moving from one spot. I'll be sitting at a bench working on something set the screw driver down for a minute then can't find it a minute later when I need to remove another screw. I spent 20 minutes looking for it and finally just grabbed another one.

Yeah, but don't sarcastically refer to a dealership as a "stealership" when posting on the Internet. That's a mortal sin that will be defended to the death. And it really hurts a techs feelings.

Lost a craftsman 1/2" socket a while back. Looked everywhere for it and couldn't find it. I have others, but the hole in my set bugs me every time I grab a tool.

Well, this past month did a complete top to bottom clean and organization in the garage. Took everything out, cleaned, put everything back in.

Never did find it. :headscrat

I have that problem without the dog taking them. I swear I spend more time looking for tools i set down somewhere than I do working on things. I should put a retractable lanyard for all my tools haha.

I was tuning up my chevy tune port engine. I made a special tool for the distributor bolt. All was going well, I got ready to tighten the bolt down and reached over where I layed it and :dunno:it was gone. What the hell happened to that wrench?? I looked under the car, all over the shop, out side where I went to pee. No f^&%$& wrench. I was useing all the obsenities I could come up with. My wife could hear me, and came out to see if I was all right. She asked what is your problem:mad: I said I lost a GD wrench. As I was walking away ,she said what is that in your back pocket.:lol_hitti

I also lost my black & decker sawsall will the box full of blades. The blades where worth more than the saw. Never have found it,think someone took it out of the truck bed, not sure. I also droped a 11/32 mac socket inside a hole on the underside of my torinos trunk. It not lost but i cant get it out.

Haven't lost any lately, but I did find a body shop slide hammer under the hood of a truck I took to the Ford dealer for warranty work. I lived about 40 miles from the dealership, and found it a couple of days after the warranty work. I felt very lucky that it didn't bounce into the fan, radiator during the time it was in there. The truck was in for transmission work, so don't have a clue what the slide hammer was doing there, unless one of the mechanics of body men was playing tricks on another.

No I'm not serious. Its a figure of speech. Never heard a mechanic drop a ratchet or a wrench and say "**** looks like you jut sold him a wrench"?
But if I'm doing something under the hood and I drop a tool I search for it.

I lost my cordless drill last fall. I literaly emptied the garage looking for it. I found it a few weeks ago. It was setting on the pool deck where I had used it to take down the pool ladder! :( On a related wife note. If I use a tool in the house and don't take it back to the garage right away, she finds a drawer to put it in and I may not see it again for months!:FIREdevil

1 of those grew legs And another fell out in a customers car and another, I just have no idea. I must have owned four of them.
I pay close attention to the C4 I bought.

My 6" Helios Dial Caliper that I have had for 40 plus years. It will show up I hope. I lose more things the older I get. I guess that problem is directly proportional to age.
The most interesting tool find was a wooden handled stubby screwdriver.
I was trying out a 72 K-5 Blazer that was about 5 years old. When I got on the freeway I opened up that quadrajunk all the way and she was really moving out and sounding good. I was rapidly approaching a group of vehicles so I backed off on the accelerator and she kept going wide open. I was fast approaching the traffic,I applied the brake as I found the the ignition, 'first ride in strange vehicle at high speed, not real smart', and shut it off.
The wooden handle had wedged under the carb cam and against the manifold.
I didn't mention it to the owner, I bought the Blazer, should never have sold it, had it for 10 years.
