Hi I have only been on here for a short while and looking at some of the garages on here Im impressed :eyecrazy:. I keep changing my garage around as I am never happy with it!!:dunno: Now I have seen what some of you have done with the space so I have drawn up a plan!. About 6 years ago I had an extension built on the side of the house did put in for a double garage with two bedrooms on top but the plans got rejected and I had to fight to make the garage a little bigger. I am going to put a carport on the side of the house to store the cars and use the garage as a workshop / store.

Can't seem to find any pictures of the garage before it was knocked down and the new one built. When I do find some I will post them so you can see how small it was. Here are a couple of pictures of what it looks like at the moment believe it or not I have just had a major sort out and can walk from one end to the other without having to climb over things.

from the main door

IMG_1224.jpg

from the other end

IMG_1222.jpg

The plan is to double the length of the workbench and make some wall shelves above it, add a lot more lighting including fitting lights to the bottom of the shelving so the workbench is brighter. Also fix the shelving unit at back to the wall so it doesn't move Im just waiting until I hear the unit fall as whenever I put something on it it leans even more. Once all that is done I will plasterboard the walls and paint them might even do a two tone colour scheme. I did see someone had used red duct tape to make a border which looked good. Then it will just leave the floor, I painted it red when the garage was first built but it needs doing again. I do like the floor tiles that some people have used but over here they are quite expensive. Thats it for now not going to do anything tonight now but the big change will start tomorrow.

Looking forward to following your progress. I know how long it takes to sort through a place like this.

Sounds like a good plan. You may find it is not worth the bother of plasterboarding the walls - have a look around at other garages on here as a lot of them look good with just painted brick/blockwork. Plasterboard becomes a good idea if you are adding an insulating layer behind, so it depends on whether you are intending to try and keep your garage warm as to whether it is worth the extra work/expense I guess.

Exactly some of the best garages I've seen in the UK on here and detailingworld etc only have painted block work. That's what I have planned for my new build.
Plaster boarding makes it harder to change locations of things and unless you have a stick build or want to go for a show smooth finish or for insulation reasons I think its overkill.
I also plan to paint (mainly to seal) the walls on my attached garage then cover the side walls in slat board /wall (what shops use to hang things on) so I can change the way I hang tools when i change my mind on there layout, maybe that would be a cheaper option if you want a show finish.

It took me about a week to sort it out to how it is now. I still had a large plastic box that I was given full nuts bolts and clips to sort so I can find what I have when I need it.

I have painted most of the walls already I was only going to cover the walls as when they took the my old garage down I have a row of stepped bricks holes which I was going to hide. But you lot are right and as I do change my mind I think a new coat of paint is in hand and to fill the holes in the wall . As my wife keeps saying to me its not a showroom its a working garage.

Apart from your time and about £20 for a ten litre tub of white paint you've got nothing much to lose - if it isn't up to your standards once done then you can still stick the plasterboard over the top of it then ;)

Here in the States drywall (plaster board) is attached to masonry over wood or metal strapping. About 1.5 inches total thickness. Does not sound like much, just 3 inches out of the floor width but in organizing a small shop every bit of space is precious. I would not trade the space for smooth walls. I would make such a trade if the benefit was a warmer, insulated work space. Those are my values. Yours may vary.

had a good day on the workshop today. Well a good afternoon after the wife had me running around getting the food shopping then getting rid of some rubbish at the local council dump. Then I could start

first job was to empty the garage of bikes, boxes and car bits

Firstly I wanted to double the size of my workbench by cutting a shelving unit in half and putting it on each side of the original. I moved one of my toolboxes and built it into the workbench. this had two benifits 1 gave me more room and raised the box up to make it easier to get into it. 2 I help restore army vehicles and used to wheel this box up a ramp into the back of my car after a while the weld broke and it all went floppy this now holds it in place.

IMG_1227.jpg

IMG_1228.jpg

Next job is to make the shelf unit that will screw to the wall and hang from the ceiling

this is what holes I wanted to cover up by covering the walls with plaster board (dry wall) I am going to cover them with a board and then repaint the walls.

IMG_1234.jpg

Also with the longer workbench I could move the computer that was perched on the end of my rollcab now I can use the mouse and keyboard without having to hold it.

IMG_1227.jpg

this freed up the end of the rollcab to make a charging station

IMG_1232.jpg

this is the area to the side of my garage where I am planing to build a carport and might even at a later date put ends on it (and yes there is a car under all of that lot!!!)

Looking a good bit better with the reorg. Your over bench shelves plan will also help a whole lot. Keep the thread going. It looks quite shop like now. Also interested in your plans to utilize the side yard you show.
Cheers

the plan for the side yard is to clear all the rubbish. I have just had a quote to build a carport the full lenght of the garage. once that is done the plan is to make ends to enclose the back end near the shed at the end, I will make a gate at the end near the shed so I still have access to the shed then put a door on the front to fully enclose it. The carport will have a clear roof to it for extra light. Hope to build the shelves above the workbench this week after work and get them fitted at the weekend. I have noticed that some of you have added storage above and to the sides of your main door which I think I will do as well. Now need to go to the local hardware shop and look at lights for above the workbenches and would like something near the main door as well. Must go and do somethings around the house tonight so I can play at the weekend!!!

Hi
I got a few of them now. I used to go to Florida each year and go to a place called old town to see the car cruise on a friday and Saturday evening. Now I have to get them in the uk now as I have 3 kids (or as better known a drains on my wallet or more importantly my car fund!!) so Im having to save up my pennies before I come back over to your side of the pond.

Small update. sorry no pictures as it was dark outside by the time I finished

Wanted to get out for the whole day today but after letting the kids have a sleepover at the in-laws I had a long lie-in!!. Then the wife had me doing a bit of housework. So it was 3.30 before I got out into my workshop:willy_nil I wanted to make and fix the shelf unit above my workbench, Instead I got side tracked and made a unit on the other side of my rollcab. At the bottom I have put my compressor which when I get time I will make a vented cupboard to make it run quiter. Also now i have room for my tools that dont fit in my toolbox. Then I set about making the shelves for above my work bench which I have finished making them but haven't got it on the wall yet as I ran out of time. I won't be able to get out tomorrow as its mothers day so a day out is planned (might get up early and have a play won't be able to fit the shelf unit up as it will be to noisey  )

will get some pictures next week once the unit it up

intil next time

Been out for the last couple of evenings  First thing was to clear the **** off the workbench then had to be creative as I was working on my own and had to get the shelf unit I had made at the weekend on the wall so I could mark it ready to drill then to hold it up whilst I screwed it up

IMG_1238.jpg

amazing what a few bricks wood and some old paint cans can do. Only problem was when I came to take it down I dropped the wood and it wiped my cup out luckly I had finished it shame I lost my favorite cup

This is it now fitted wont put anything on it at the moment until it make some straps to fix on the front bkts (will have to do that at the weekend due to the noise)

Don't worry my workshop garage has took me over a year of saturdays to tidy, sort through and organise with many many trips to the tip per weekend. It takes far longer than people think.

haven't been out in my garage for a little while. Put my hand to a bit of woodwork today wife has wanted a pergola over the decking. Thought I better carry on with it as I did start it last year (well I cut the 6 post and fixed 1 in!!) now I have extended one corner of the decking where we had a flower/ weed bed, Fix up the rest of the posts. Now my wife being my wife didn't like the pergola kits that you can buy also the size of the decking doesn't seem to be a standard size so I and to buy the wood and cut the end that she liked. I got the front and back ends cut and started to make the top beams 4 down 8 to go!!!, also I wanted to fit the jockey wheel on my trailer finally got the wheel fitted after darting in and out of the rain slowly getting the jobs off her list done so I can get back out to my garage and my cars!!!

I back out again!!!
After spending a couple of weekends in and out of the rain I got my pergola finished

still got some more to do as the wife wants a corner seat made for the decking just waiting for the wood to arrive

had to get most things out of the garage so I could sweep it out again amazing where all the sawdust ends up

I have spyed out some cabinets to replace the shelves at the back of the workshop so it should look a bit neater fingers crossed I can get my hands on them.

looking at the floor again I think for now I'm going to paint it again.

next to sort out is my extra parts shelf over the last few year I have just been stuffing bits on the shevles now it just looks a mess.

As the weather was good last weekend I got my latest project uncovered my 1984 Simitar GTC. Got this car a few years ago in boxes the car had been completely stripped apart from spilting the body off the chassis. I got it thinking I could get it repainted and rebuilt within 6 months that must of been about 3-4 years ago amazing what gets in the way!!!

hope to get it off to the bodyshop for paint by the end of July (but I not making any promises knowing what the British weathers like)

also spent a little time sorting out my sockets until I ran out of clips which gives me an excuse to go tool shopping!!!:3gears::3gears:

looking good, definitely a tight fit!

yes it is,

but well used area with lots of storage,
When I get a little more free cash I want first to build a carport on the side to store and work on my projects, then enclose it to make a garage for the cars. this will never be a show garage.!!!

Next part of the project is to do something with the floor (I have some commercial floor tiles or just paint the floor again)

Also I was looking to get some cupboards for the end wall to replace the racking but thinking about it I might just get some matching plastic boxes to replace the tatty cardboard boxes.

I would like to end up with a neat but practical work space.

I am doing that exact thing, I had a carport roof put up and I'm closing it in, I do light fab work in a small single attached currently, was sitting inside my new area (still working on closing it in) and wondering what the hell I'm gonna do once i'm not tripping over everything!

Coming along well! Work goes so much faster when things are organized. I had to look up Burlington - interesting history! Do you still have the car?

yes still have it. I have two of them. I have to rent two garages to keep them in. I also run the owners club which I started when I pick up the plans. The first club closed down. I was amazed how many Burlingtons are around, especially as most were sold as plans so they were easier to post all around the world

I use it to do local car show and charity runs:3gears:, I enjoy raising money for good charities (you can never do too much for a charity!!) and showing my car off is an added bonus

just re-drawing my plans again I told you I can't leave my work space alone for long. The cabinets idea will has been shelved. going to extend my workbench to the end of the garage as behind the storage shelves are more power sockets the going to make unit for my table saw that will be part of the workbench but put it on wheels so for larger project's I can move out. The shelving units will be cut down and moved to the side. Hope to start this phase over the next few weekends

Saturday after work and running around after the kids :willy_nil I started on the last remodel of the garage. First was to remove most of the bits off the back shelves and parts rack.

didn't know how much I had in there!!!!

when I moved the corner unit I found I did have a work buddy!!!

soon had that cleared out now have extended the work bench too the end had to cut a hole in the end of the bench to make room for the water pipes. Once I clear the floor a bit I will post some more pictures. next job is to paint the end wall and make my table saw trolley and find room for all the bits

Looks like a great project. The pergola looks great! I'd like to build or buy one like that some day for my back yard. I also know what it's like to find a ton of stuff, and realize "wow I've got a lot of stuff!". I'm going through that right now.

I couldn't find a kit that the wife liked and to the size of the decking that I had ended up designing an end that she liked bought a load of treated wood beams and set about cutting each end and notching them together. I also cost a fraction of the price of the kits.

Had a good play at the weekend had a sort out of all my bits and pieces. now I think its starting to get where I like it. Still goto to paint the walls. I put the wall art up so it wouldn't get damaged.

this is what the end wall looks like now

hope you can see the pictures at I am tryingout the thumbnail way of doing it

I have found some wheels to make a mobile table saw so if I have a larger project I can wheel it out.

also scored at the weekend  a neighbour popped round over the weekend and offered me a toolbox

was going to decline as I thought it was just the toolbox as you can see its a bit knacked but it came with all the tools which are mainly draper and halfords pro makes

Hadn't had too much to report recently. had a few days off work so thought I would crack on!!!

completely finished the deck area so I thought

had to make a table someone offered me the table frame for free as her son had smashed the glass when having a party!!! getting a new sheet of glass outweighed the cost of a new table so I reversed some decking boards one table

then made a corner unit for the seat and a stand for the BBQ. The wife the found some cushions

Then I had to go to my mums to sort though her garage and collect the last of my late dads tools

now just got to sort though them the blue box on the bottom is just full of spanners!!

also got another vice

today I have started clearing down the side I have a couple of builders how are coming around this week to quote for making my carport this is stage one what I want to do later is remove the fence and enclose it completey to make another garage. At long last its starting to move!!

also my GTC has finaily gone off to the bodyshop to get its new shiney coat of paint. everything seems to be happening at the moment long may it continue :lol::lol:
