Ok I have a 40" Craftsman top and bottom chest, its red with the grey drawers...any idea what color grey would match it ???

I am also considering buying the 56" roller box from Harbor Freight and selling my Craftsman...what would be a fair price to ask ?? Its in good shape just a couple small scratches...

I would like to find a Snap On this size used for around 1400 or less but have not seen anything in decent shape....I know others have been happy with the HF box....I just hate buying China stuff...

I stumbled upon a color called black magic at Lowes, and it is made by Olympic. The paint is latex, but they may be able to whip some together in an oil based enamel. The color is a good match, as I used it to paint a bunch of wood shelves.

Looks like you have a nice setup the way it is.

Maybe you're already aware, but your Craftsman is probably 18" in depth and the HF is 22" in depth. Unless you currently have some dead space behind the Craftsman, the HF is going to stick out away from the wall past your workbench at least another 4 inches. I don't know if that would be a problem for you or not, but just something to keep in mind.

I purchased my 26" Craftsman top and bottom combo new in the late 80's and it has the dark grey drawers. It's one of the better built boxes before sourcing to china. Not sure when the drawers went to black, but if yours is one of the pre-china boxes like mine, I'd be keeping it if I were you. My $.02

Yes it is a really dark color that matches the drawers almost perfectly on mine. It is called black magic, but is a really dark gray color. If anything it might be just a tick lighter than my drawer color, but not much, if any. I have a box from around 1992 with red box and dark gray drawers. It is a Craftsman. Pretty good box.

yea71, It will stick out past the bench on the left but it is about the same depth as the bench on the right....not sure IF the US General will hold anymore than the 2 Craftman..

If I sold the Craftsman what would it bring ??

what kind of slides are on that box? If they are the standard slides, meaning not even Quiet Glide slides, then I would estimate that box, top and bottom, at maybe $300-350. I say this because the ball bearing slide version of your setup can be bought, on a good sale for $500-600 brand new, with Griplatch drawers. You might want to compare the square footage and volume of your boxes and the HF you want to buy before you spend a bunch of dough to find out you still have the same amount of storage space. Sears and HF list all that info on their sites.

I think they are standard glide,,,to be honest I like them better than the ball bearing slides....yea I think the storage area is about a wash between the two of them....then I need to decide to try and touch up every scratch or leave it alone...ITS A TOOLBOX !

Sounds like you are just trying to scatch an itch to buy something new, with no real gain over what you have already. I think you would be better off investing that money in somesome you may not already have, like maybe an air compressor or mig welder or something.

A full service paint retailer should be able to color match the craftsman drawer in an alkyd enamel or automotive type paint. Ace hardware stores can in fact tint their "Rust Stop" house brand of Rustoleum type paint. They have a standard color deck, but might be able to color match as well but I haven't tried that.

Or, you could just paint all the drawers gloss black for perfect match and easy touch-up.

I see I'm really late to the party here on this one, but I'll catch up soon. Im sure theres more recent threads covering this topic, I just landed here first.
Really enjoying the advice and input. I have several Craftsman boxes I'm about to start on, actually have already started, and will put up some pics soon.
Just so I can say I put my 2cents in, I use Rustoleum Regal Red and smoke gray for my boxes from this era. Lowes sells in the rattle can and by the quart here at home, and I had great results with both. I like trying to keep things as original as possible, but getting help from Sears was like watching grass grow, so I just ran with what I had and it worked out great.
