Ran across these on Kijiji, might just be the ticket for a lathe or W/B.

Finally got back with them:

On another note, my workbench is coming along, just picked up these cast steel/iron (can't tell) bench legs off of kijiji for $25 (the pair). Seems to weigh a healthy 50 pounds each, pretty stout. May have to drill some holes on the back to install a stringer. Looks like the paintjob was redone sometime in the past, will be grinding several places flat and redoing the paint (or powdercoat as the tolerances on the legs are non-existent unlike the jack). I'm still baffled as to why there is this 'step' on the front portion of the legs, most bench legs have a flat top, but this one has a step in the middle.

Just have to get some baltic birch and laminate them together. Aiming for a 1.5" to 2" thick top. Should I go thicker? I thought about cladding the ply in stainless, but I don't do much work that involves copious amounts of fluids, (if I did I'd be using a pan) so I'll probably finish it with some Danish/tung oil. After that I'll be able to mount my vise finally!

One of the legs was cracked (you can see this in post #3, the first leg you hit counting from the left) and a doubler plate was installed on one side then bolted down. So not exactly 'new', plus I suspect it had been repainted in the past by another owner (the seller was just an auctioneer specializing in estate sales with a HUGE garage). Oddly, there doesn't seem to be a right or left leg, the castings for the four legs he had were identical 9cost savings perhaps)?

regardless, didn't want to haggle with him, felt that $25 was more than fair, and like I said above, they weighed in at a decent amount. I'll get the top flattened to the best of my abilities and then repainted, as the current paintjob could be done a lot better.

I don't suggest going back for the other set he had, unless you're fine with the cracked one (perhaps negotiate a lower price, bring it home and weld the pieces together?).

If it is cracked, chances are really good that it IS cast iron.

You can do a spark test to confirm.

Sistering a piece on with bolts is probably more than adequate for a work bench leg.

Good to see they found a good home. See anything else interesting there? Those kind of guys always have the best "junk".
