First Estate Sale & MAC Toolbox Purchase

Well I've bought quite a bit of stuff over the years from Craigslist with good success and most recently found a local pawn shop as well. After reading all of the good estate and yard sales finds I figured it was time to go to one myself. The one I went too this morning was advertised as an estate sale but it was more or less the family selling everything that was left from their father that had passed away. As soon as I pulled up I was excited as the garage was a detached unit with a Harley Davidson Avenue sign above it. This looked like a good place.

There were two older Harleys for sale and some tools. I showed up about 20 minutes before start time as it said no early birds and there were already 20 vehicles there and the garage was packed. Everything looked well picked through and nothing really caught my eye other than this toolbox. I pulled open the drawers and saw a few old MAC screwdrivers in good shape and a few USA wrenches like Billings in there as well. Finally I saw the MAC logo and decided to see what they wanted for it. They said a bunch of people were interested but I could have the boxes and everything inside for $100. At that point I said sold did a little looking and then packed her up and brought her home.

The lady that sold it too me looked a little sad and broken up when we were loading it on my truck. She said she remembered helping her father load tools in that box as a child. I have no intention of selling it and told her I would be cleaning it up and putting it to good use for years to come in my garage.

As you can see the tools are nothing too special but were in there so I'm happy. They said there was no key for the locks but when I got home and went through everything I found the keys and they work! Still trying to figure out what the tools on the front left side of the top of the box are for that have hollowed out parts in the shaft. The gentlemen worked on bikes so maybe something for that??

Also had a screwdriver holder in one of the drawers that I pulled out and put on the side. Top drawers although not pictured has a really nice small red tray with many small compartments for nuts and bolts and stuff. You can see how well the paint was preserved on the front door where I wiped it up a bit. The rest of the box has character so I will probably not restore it but just clean it up and put it too work.

Anyone in here no of what year this would be from?? I searched the net and GJ but have had no luck so far. The drawers are all roller bearing and are very smooth. I didn't realize they were roller bearing til I got home as people were hawking around me while I was trying to make a deal with the estate owner.

All in all it was a nice first experience and I got to meet some great people and now have another really cool box to add to my never ending collection. This is no where near some of the deals I've found on CL on some snap on boxes I have but I like it and feel I did all right.

Sadly, that is what "Estate Sales" are usually, dead people's belongings being picked through by strangers while family looks in horror.

Those hollow shaft things are gasket or hole punches. You put the gasket on a piece of wood and then hit the punch and it cuts a round hole.

I what I meant was it wasn't a hired out estate sale. Signs around the area said indoor yard sales but it was advertised online as an estate sale! :lol_hitti

Thanks this may be something I can hold onto. Never know if I will need them.

Hole punches are something seldom needed, but the last ones I priced were more than $20 each.

jack vines.

Very cool. I guess you never know what you are going to find. I have occasionally needed to make a gasket hole and used to just use a punch and keep manipulating it to the right size. These may come in handy.

Keep those hole punches, you will use them. Not only are they just hole punches for gaskets, but if you make patterns they can be used to make rounded corners (coves) too. Have made cardboard sleeves for credit cards and sleeves (boxes) for magazines that I wanted to save. In both cases finger grips were punched using a 3/4 or 1" size with the edge on the center line. Looks a bit more refined than just cutting in a birdmouth with snips.

I will definitely hold onto them. Thanks for the add'l info on them. May have to make some projects now just to use them.

Hey lilredex if you don't mind posting some of your pictures of what you were describing for magazine and credit cards that would be great. Or just PM me some pictures. I'm always looking to learn something new. With knowledge comes power!

That looks real nice. Actually it looks like you bought a bottom and a middle chest  I don't know why, but it seems vintage middle tool boxes are really hard to find and when you do, extremely expensive.

It looks dirty, but straight and rust free. I really like the front cover / door contraption. Plus you got the keys  Yep for $100 it's official I think you ****. Didn't you also just pick up a super cheap KR537 and bottom? I hate you (in a good way).

I wish there was (or I knew) of a vintage mac site similar to "collecting snap on" where we could look through and gawk at all of the old mac boxes.

Yes there is a middle box with it. It has a great top on it that I think I'm going to use to work off of. I occasionally do some carburetor work on bikes and I think this will be perfect.

Yes I'm the one that go the 537 top and bottom at a really good price. i also just picked up a side locker from Snap on and a middle toolbox that is 26 inches in width also snap on. I'll post that in another thread sometime! lol

I really do wish there was a MAC vintage web site. I'd love to learn more about the box and anything else MAC related. I think this site has officially given me a tool box and tool addiction. I don't know how to stop by olding toolboxes and tools! lol

Here they are. The magazine slip covers are probably not a worthwhile project for you guys, but for us they are by the time you add on the shipping, etc.

If you embark on cardboard projects, saw up a hardwood board with a 45* bevel to crush the fibres on the crease line then bend up against it.

A little off topic, but here you are.

Same here, I use to think my craftsman homeowner box was good. Then saw some of the pics on here. Boy did I feel inadequate  Joking of course.

Can you post some pics of the slides? Do they actually use full ball bearings, or ball bearing rails like the new boxes? Did you find any date stamp or the like on it?

So how many vintage boxes are you up to now?

That is a cool box! The best feature is that top work space with the turned up sides. Nothing rolling off of there!

Lilredex very cool sleeves. I may end up doing that some day myself! Thanks for posting!

I will post pictures of the rollers as soon as I get a chance. I can't fin any date stamp and don't know if MAC even has a date stamp on their boxes. I'm surprised no one has chimed in that has one like this. I do love the work surface with the turned up edges.
