Should I install a new intake manifold gasket when I reinstall the intake manifold?

I am changing out the starter on a 2003 honda element. The starter is under the intake manifold so I have to remove the intake manifold.

Should I install a new intake manifold gasket when I reinstall the intake manifold or can I reuse the old intake manifold gasket?

I would appreciate advice from a technician.

you could re use it however the gasket is less than a $20 at any auto parts store, I wouldn't risk it, cheap insurance.

Yes, replace it............always. Why take a chance on having to do it over? Wind up chasing poor running issues and codes......it's not worth it.

Just do it right the first time.

absolutely!
some vehicles gaskets just don't hold up and fail with time. Google GM intake gaskets and see the wide range that fail. Many times the aftermarket replacements address known issues and have updates applied.
As long as you are there, fix / clean / lube everything you touch or remove and reinstall.
Takes more time upfront, but usually prevents headaches later.

It depends on the gasket. Some gaskets compress when they're installed to conform to the mating surfaces. Those gaskets have to be reinstalled EXACTLY in the same spot that they were before you took them off or they're not gonna seal again. If the bolt holes have any slop in them, you not gonna be able to get the gasket reinstalled in the exact same spot as it was before.

Yes. Or you can be like the customers to my dealer, deny it and then have to pay for the job again when they realize their old gasket is no longer worthy.

Especially an intake manifold gasket. One little thin spot and you'll be sucking in air - leaning out your fuel/air mixture.

Unless it's an emergency project that has to be done NOW and can't wait on a gasket that isn't in town I ALWAYS put a new gasket/seal/oring. It really isn't worth the trouble of reusing the old one and hoping it will seal.

Other than saving a little bit of cash, there's no reason not to.

Yes, replace it! the old one will never seal,as stated. A lean condition will burn engine components. Follow the proper torque pattern to specs when reinstalling also.

Amother question might be "is there anyway to R&R the starter on 2003 Element without removing the intake manifold"? I have no idea myself but if there is a way to, a honda tech or forum likely has, and could tell you how it's done.

Hate to say how many I've seen gooped and reused. Mechanic friend of mine ended up banning Permatex "the right stuff" from his shop so nobody would even think about it.

Gasket and seal are usually not reusable, so you definitely should replace it.
