My garage gets very very hot during the summer time. How do fridges work in the heat like that... do they have to work harder to keep the contents cold?
A little, but more importantly, keep those condenser coils clean, and let them breath. If your coils are on the back of the fridge, pull it away from the wall a few inches and leave the sides open several inches so hot air can escape. Fridges can be deceiving, they can have dirty coils and cabinets up against them and hold a good cold temp inside, but the compressor is working extra hard to maintain the temperature and it's life will be much shorter than it's supposed to be. Again, periodically clean your condenser coils say every 6 months and if it has a fan, make sure it's spinning, especially when the compressor is on. Simply think of a fridge as a living thing, it has to breath, the refrigerant is like blood, it circulates and has a a very important job, the compressor is the heart that pumps the refrigerant blood. Most people seem to neglect their fridges and end up paying for expensive repairs or buying another fridge when all they had to do was a little PM, it's amazing how long they can last.
