What size cord for 7/9" grinder?

I picked up an old Milwaukee 7/9" grinder-all metal, no plastic. Similar to the style in the pic.

It is 11.5 AMPS.

I need to replace the cord and want to put a Ridgid extension cord with lighted end on it. Probably buy a 25' and use about 20' so I can use the other 5' on another project.

1: Should I run 12 or 14 g wire? I found a chart online, but it said something like measure the distance of the wire and back again (so 20*2=40') and at 11amps it told me to use 10g. IDK if that's right??? Don't think so. Does anybody have the correct chart? Or link?

2: With the new cord could/should I run the ground? Remember, it's an all metal tool. Place the ground inside to the body on a screw???

Thanks guys!

Definitely use a grounded cord. preferably to a dedicated screw.

11 Amps is the amps draw on the plate? That is probably surge draw, not constant. Do you have access to a Clamp on meter you can check it with?

Yes, it says 11.5A on the little metal tag riveted on the grinder. And I have a clamp meter. But to tell the truth, I do not know how to properly use it. I'll research that...

Make up a pigtail extension cord with separate wires. Tape up the ground and one of the other leads and use the clamp on the individual lead, You only need a foot or so to have room to use the clamp.

11 amps, you will be fine with a 14 gauge cord.

Charles

Right om. Thanks! BTW...(with all due respect and I know most tools this size have 14g cord), but how do you know this? Is there an equation I could do for now on so I don't have to ask you guys everytime? :lol_hitti

Is there a correct chart that I haven't located yet?

Thanks again!

Dave,

You should grab a copy of Ugly's Electrical Reference.

I pull out my copy whenever I'm working on an electrical project I'm a little unsure about and it has never failed to get me the answers I need.
