Hello fellow garage & shop enthusiasts,

I discovered The Garage Journal this afternoon as the result of a Google search on Costco floor jacks. Very cool! I've always wanted a nice little room of my own in the house and as of a couple years ago I am now very thankful to have one!

Here are a few of the basics:
- Rust-Oleum EPOXYShield floor (just the water-based basic stuff)
- Two-tone walls with yellow accent stripe
- Full insulation and additional wiring with dedicated 20A circuit for air comp.
- Kobalt 30 gal air compressor with regulated & unregulated lines
- Craftsman Griplatch ball bearing tool chest
- 8-foot workbench and wall cabinets from Costco

One of the other things I'm thankful for is that my wife and I both fully agree that this is both a shop and a garage -- we park two cars in it every night. Maybe someday I'll have the privilege to have a garage with enough area for both parking and permanent shop space!

And here are the photos without further ado. Please tell me what you think!

Wow! Looks like you figured out all the tricks yourself! Looks great. I'm about to start a garage about the same size as yours. Thanks for the hints.

Show us what you park in there!

Not a color combination that I would have thought of but I like it. Looks like you have two doors into the house?

Ah, didn't think to mention that, did I? Thank you for asking! Right now we are parking a Honda Pilot and my 2007 Honda S2000, which is "Rio Pearl Yellow" in color and -- just coincidentally -- matches that yellow accent stripe on the walls. (No, yellow is not my favorite color, but it just looks good on some things...)

Thanks for the compliments, and I will gladly accommodate your request! See pictures below.

Very nice.

What brand/type of wall cabinets are those? Craftsman?

I purchased the wall cabinets from Costco's website about two years ago. They are not top-end products but they were decent quality, nice looking, and the price was right. They are not Craftsman but I forget what they are at the moment. I'll check when I get home and PM you or post again.

Oh, Kevin54 mentioned the diamond plate light fixtures. Those are from Home Depot. (Again, that was a couple years ago; not sure if they still carry them.)

Thank you. The door by the water heater is the door into the house. The door by the air compressor goes out to the side of our back yard.

And here's the proof that we actually do use it as a garage...

Okay, the cabinets are "Platinum Pro" Hanging 2-Door Cabinet Model 41493 originally made by O'Sullivan Industries which has apparently ceased operations but they are now available from http://www.osullivanbysauder.com/ Their product number for this cabinet is 403349 and the following link should take you directly to it: http://www.osullivanbysauder.com/ProductPage.asp?p=4. My cost through Costco (total incl. tax and S&H) worked out to $70 per cabinet which seemed to be a good price at the time. (Purchased in May 2006)

Hope this helps...

Edit: here's a photo of the cabinets on the side wall just after installation.

Congratulations Dude, that is one beautiful shop you have. Mine isn’t nearly as pretty and I haven’t got it wired yet but I’ll get there, I’m working on the wiring right now. Congratulations again, that is one nice shop. Oh, here are a few shot of my shop.

How do you like the Kobalt compressor? What do you use the orange hose for, that is before the water filter? I assume the blue hose is for most air tools and painting, because of the dual filters.
Thanks,
Blake

What do you think of the workbench & wall cabinets from Costco? Were these in the local store, or did you order them online from costco.com?

Loving the cabinet arrangement. Any plans to modify the S2K?:bounce:

Blake,

I've been quite satisfied with the Kobalt compressor, although I currently use it only once or twice a month. It is model #215921 that I purchased for $388 + tax in May 2006. From the research I had done I knew I wanted a belt-driven compressor rather than the noisier and less durable direct-drive "buzz box" compressors. I also wanted a compressor that was capable of at least 5 SCFM at 90psi (this one is good for 5.7 SCFM @ 90psi), and the vertical format saves floor space. My primary decision was between this Kobalt compressor and a very similar vertical format Husky compressor from Home Depot. I chose the Kobalt because of its slightly larger tank (30 gal Kobalt vs 26 gal Husky) and black color which matches my garage better than the red Husky. I believe the Kobalt may have been slightly less expensive as well, as I recall the Husky compressor was $399.

My one and only (minor) complaint thus far is a slight oozing from the oil drain plug, which has occurred since I first purchased the unit. It hasn't lost enough that I've had to add oil, but I do have to wipe it off occasionally. I should probably check to make sure it's really the drain plug that is leaking and not a small crack in the crankcase sometime before the 3-year limited warranty expires next year! Probably about time to change its oil anyway...

As far as the hoses go, the orange hose is unregulated and unfiltered for inflating tires, using a blowgun, etc. The blue hose is connected to an FRL (filter, regulator, lubricator) unit which filters and regulates the air to 90 psi as well as adding occasional drops of oil if desired for use with air tools. Incidentally, the orange FRL unit you see in these photos was kind of a cheap one from Harbor Freight (it worked fine, but leaked slightly) and has since been replaced with an all-in-one filter/regulator unit (no lubricator) made by Ingersoll that I purchased on sale recently from MSC.

Thank you Jaguar Fan! I live in the Victor Valley area, just north of the Cajon Pass about 45 minutes north of San Bernardino. I purchased the workbench and wall cabinets from costco.com, not our local store.

Other than a slight bit of shipping damage to the solid wood top (most of which I repaired; not worth refusing delivery) I am very impressed with the value of the 8-foot workbench (Model #60396BBSS mfg'ed by MBI Chicago IL, 800-229-9611). One neat thing about the bench is that the frame is adjustable and built to accommodate 5, 6, 7, or 8-foot length tops. I haven't seen this particular workbench on costco.com since I purchased it, but I did see a fairly similar one in our local store maybe 6-12 months ago.

The cabinets are decent quality for the price I paid ($70 ea. incl. tax and shipping) and I am very satisfied with them thus far. Assembly and installation was very easy, which was a big plus considering I mounted eight of them (3 over my workbench and 5 along the side wall). Sure, I would like to have cabinets by Baldhead or Moduline, but those weren't anywhere close to my budget at the time. Maybe someday?

:p

Nice garage.. you need to tear into that s2k or get a project car now.

Thanks guys. Yeah, about that S2K... :) No modifications planned in the immediate future as it is currently my daily driver and still has lots of warranty left. However, I have been thinking about a supercharger at some point in the future, possibly swapping out the front bumper/fascia for the older AP1 version which I actually like better. Racing seats with 5-point harnesses, maybe some suspension mods and stiffer torsion bars from the 2008 S2000 CR model if they fit. The list could be endless. :bounce:

Then again, I love the roadster feel but I've always wanted an American V8 so I have also been tossing around the idea of someday building a Factory Five roadster (Ford Cobra replica for those who may not be familiar) with -- of course -- a 427 big block. My wife says it would be a great project to do with the kids when they're a few years older, which sounds fine to me. Now that would be a fun garage project!

... Thank you Jaguar Fan! I live in the Victor Valley area, just north of the Cajon Pass about 45 minutes north of San Bernardino...

I've driven thru the Cajon Pass often going from San Bernardino to Las Vegas (I even seized the engine on an old 2-stroke 350 Kawaski on that pass) ... about 3 months ago, I epoxied the floor of a 2 car garage in Vegas (slab about 9 months old at that point). I think it turned out ok, but one of the unforseen issues was keeping the floor damp for acid etch. It is just so dry (about 9% humidity) that even with flooding the floor beforehand, within 3 mins of applying diluted acid, the floor would visibly start to dry. So, I kept sprinkling more water to let the acid do its thing.

... ... I have also been tossing around the idea of someday building a Factory Five roadster (Ford Cobra replica for those who may not be familiar) with -- of course -- a 427 big block. Sounds like you have a great, understanding wife! I've thought of building a Cobra replica, as well... it is on my "bucket list." :) Keep us posted if you do!
