Mitutoyo 6 inch. Missing the battery cover. Emailed Mitutoyo and they say it is not in production and parts not available (I'll bet it is the same as used on later models, but without a part number, which they won't give me, I have no way of knowing).

Anyhow, if anyone has a old one laying around, damaged, bent, broken beyond repair, and want to part with the battery cover, please PM me. If the caliper says "Absolute" on it, it is not likely to fit, but I cannot say for sure. Mine is a model 500-136.

Works perfectly, and I figure I can "whittle" one out of a chunk of plastic or something.

Battery had been taped in it with scotch tape, the tape broke, the battery was missing, so I could not turn it on to try it. Flea market seller (who I have bought a number of things from) said the battery got lost, $3 and it was mine. Stopped and bought a new battery on the way home, works fine. Took a bunch of cleaning with lighter fluid and q tips to get the tape goo and dirt and such off of it. Works a lot smoother now.

Ireland, €1.30 or about $1.68 US. Shipping might not be too bad.

Indonesia, 24,750 Rp or about $2.54 US...... Cannot imagine what shipping would be.

I found one US site that I thought was gonna have it, Long Island Indicator Service, and they do show the 05CAA204 as the correct cover for the 500-136 along with the -135 and -138, but when I went to their list of parts it shows 05CAA204 battery cover (no longer available) meaning they do not have and cannot get. Might just start by emailing the Irish outfit. The may not be able to ship it here, as they may have agreements that prevent them from shipping out of Europe. I know Mitutoyo USA will not ship or support outside the USA.

Just sent an email to Ireland, we'll see what they say. I found these calipers on the net, new, for about $45. Very common, I guess lots of them still in stock.

Thanks for the help.

You ****.

Battery cover Part Number is 05CAA204.

I think that is the first "you ****" I've ever received, thanks!

Thanks for the part number also.

If I can find the cover in stock somewhere, do you want one? I can order two and just mail you one when I receive it.

Double check your model number.

Great deal. Most of the ones I have seen have electrical tape wrapped around the battery to keep it in. :lol_hitti Missing the battery cover is a common problem on those units. Not a great design in my opinion. Great calipers otherwise. Just don't report the 0.0005 place on a caliper ;)

Ok, the company in Ireland has already emailed back and said he had them, and would ship it if I wanted. So I replied that I would wait till Monday evening or Tuesday to actually order, pending your response.

Just wanted to make a thank you post. unslow1 discovered and posted two possibilities for a overseas source for my obsolete and no longer produced battery cover for the Mitutoyo digital caliper. I followed up on the one in Ireland.... it was a gentleman named Richard Hayes.........

Richard Hayes
Inspection Equipment Co. Ltd.
37 Western Parkway Business Centre
Lower Ballymount Road, Dublin 12

After a couple of emails, he said he would ship the cover to his "Chicago office" which is....

Metrology & Tooling - Dimetrix
2600 Beverly Street, Suite 114
Aurora, Illinois, 60504

I'm guessing he shipped this with other items to Chicago, and after it arrived, they put it in an envelope and mailed it to me. Fits perfectly and now my caliper is "whole", and doesn't look like all the other calipers in the world that are running around missing their battery covers, and having their batteries taped in place.

Just wanted to give a big shout out for unslow1 for his search abilities, and to Richard Hayes at Inspection Equipment Co, Dublin, for his generosity in giving me the very last battery cover he had in stock.

Its not uncommon for a vendor to ask for just the battery cover to be sent in on a warranty claim. In the junk trade I've seen a LOT of nice looking items, no battery cover, and suspect warranty return is the reason.

Now put them on a gage block to see if the read accurately. Digital tools have really change in the past 30 years. I have some that I can't give away and others are gold.
When I served my tool and die apprentiship in the early 60's they made fun of me using a dial calipers. It was easy and quick. Calipers are not hard to read. I went into construction and became a general contractor and architect after that and never used the digital at work. They came along after I quit the business. I put together my own machine shop and then started buying used tools and that is when I got my first digital calipers. They are very nice but I can still do the job witht the standard type. Sense I buy and sell I have found that I can buy the standard Starrett calipers for $10 or so. No one wants them. They still make them but I can't seem to sell them for a fraction of what they are worth. I have never paid over $25 for a good digital or electronic calipers and I have a dozen different kinds. I sell them for about $40 on average.

I figure you can get a piece of plastic and cut out your own cover. You can even file in the holding lips if you take the time.

All this fuss over a $3 caliper leaves me wondering if anyone has a life. LOL I am recovering form surgery and I have plenty of time and besides I am retired and drinking my morning coffee. I am just chuckeling at the post. Without the battery cover I would not have bought them.
