I am so glad that I came across this site and all the very knowledgeable and helpful people on it. I have of course been lurking for some time and eyed longingly at so many of the awesome build threads here. I have learned so much and am thankful that there is a resource like this for all to learn ...

So, like the American Dream that is for so many and so many people on this board, I worked hard (and still doing so) and am closing in on the completion of a workshop semi-attached to our home. The idea for the workshop space started as a large rectangle but evolved from there based on other needs (and homeowner association restrictions :()and a plan was finally made ...

I am what you may call a jack of all trades but a master of very little. I am hoping that one day I may do better at many things, but it's okay if I don't. I love to work on cars, love woodworking, love working on bicycles (haven't started tinkering with motorcycles ... yet), love to tinker in general, still love toys (RC cars, computers, etc) and wanted a place that is there for all that and more. A place where friends and family can come and hang out too. I also want to put a snooker table in there somewhere.

During the start of the construction phase (slab just poured), my father passed away, and that really affected my whole family very badly. We were very slowly losing him to Parkinson's disease. I was really hoping that the garage would be a place where he and I could bond more than we had in the most recent years. But that was not meant to be, and I will always think of him, in a good way, when working/playing out there ...

Here are some pics of the build progress so far ...

That addition looks huge. What else do you have going on in there? Can you post the floor plans?

As others have said awesome plan! Sorry for the loss of your father. I'm sure he will be there with you in spirit though.

Can't wait to see your woodshop/garage come to completion. The floor plan looks awesome. On the two garage doors facing each other will this be drive thru or is there a wall there in the middle?

Love that electrical but couldn't imagine doing it. Would have to be very organized.

Very interested in the woodshop side. Do you currently have a woodshop? Any pics?

You are going to have an awesome space when it's done. Can't wait to see more. Congratulations!
Thanks! Your build looks awesome as well! So many great construction threads here...

Sorry for the loss of your father. That's a great build you've started.:D
Thank you.

Yes, I have to admit, it is huge. The original plan called for a parent's suite for my mother and father with ADA specifications. My mother still will live with us in the parent's suite. Second level was modified from original plan and is now going to be the master suite, library area, and a theater. Here's the full first floor addition plan ...

Thanks. The master bedroom will be upstairs.

Thanks Bret. The homeowner's association allows up to four car garage doors. There are three on the existing home so the addition only has a single garage door. There will be a bay for parking my daily driver and a straight path to the two post lift further in. The other door around the corner has been made into a smaller glass French door entering a sort of courtyard in the back. I'll probably put a snooker table there eventually. The master bedroom has a small balcony over that courtyard in the back also. I neither have a full woodshop currently, nor have I had a full shop in the past, but have done small jobs as I could out of a part of a garage bay. Two of our three car bays are currently used for storage of my parent's stuff that will be emptied once this is done, so I have not really had much space to work, despite it being a 3 car garage. I've been reading up and have quite a ways to go to fully equip the shop. I will probably prioritize the lift and then maybe a multifunction sliding table saw and dust collector for the shop before other gear.

Great looking space. You and the crew are going to have a lot of fun in the hobby area.
Thanks Mac ... Progress is good, but SLOW compared to how quick yours is going. Of course there's other stuff my GC is doing than the garage ...

An American Dream is definitely achievable :) Did I mention that my dad came to America with $7 in his pocket (he liked to tell that story) and, through hard work and perseverance, made a fantastic life for his family? I am very grateful I learned as much from him ...

Anyone use Thundermounts for garage door track? Looks like a very neat/clean solution. I'm going to have the track mounts installed as pictured below. Won't need the opener mount because the opener will be jackshaft.

Thanks for the idea! This may be just in time for my garage. I'm on it! Great set-up you have and keep posting !

This area looks a little bit like San Antonio -- where you at?

Yes to both. I grew up in SA (20+ years), and been here in Dallas area nearly 30 years.

Heck I may as well go for 2 more guesses then .. you live within 10 miles of Bendera Rd and you work at USAA

I have gotten so frustrated with the state of the existing garage area. It's stuffed half full with my folks stuff until the addition is complete. And just getting simple access to my tools is a major pain in the rear. There's **** all over the place. I have a tendency to get messy and not put things away, but usually go through a couple days of cleaning every few months to "reset" ... Unfortunately I just don't feel like doing it here in this wasteland ...

Solar panels went in a couple months ago, so that's new on the outside. Maybe the 12kW array will help mitigate the huge electricity bills I'm anticipating...

OK... I'm curious, what is this???
It's a small woodworking project that has been shelved until I have a little more space. It's a "mandap" or stage/proscenium where religious figures (I'm Indian) are kept. To be honest it may be shelved because I'm having issues with The MAN (not Chuck Norris) since my father died. I will finish it though, like all of my 'projects' ... :)

Beautiful build! You are going to LOVE using it....that's what it's all about. Where did the track supports come from?

Thanks Jimmie. The track supports I ordered from Home Depot but are available from thundermounts.com also. The pic is from the web as I do not have a garage door yet ...

A very great looking home and garage, neighbor! Your total attention to detail is inspiring.

I am also sorry for your recent loss. I just lost my Dad in September at age 87 and my sister and I still ask for his guidance. He sends it down, and yours will too.

I have never seen a 1200 amp breaker on a house. I'll bet the power company likes you!:D
Ya, we **** down the juice in the hot summers, but I think the electricians seriously overwired the garage and wood shop. The way they did it I could have all the 220 outlets running full amps, something that would never happen, though that moght dim the neighborhood lights :) The solar, spray foam, and change to Carrier high efficiency HVAC should decrease power consumption though.
Wow. That breaker costs about what I have in my garage total right now.
I've been saving up :)

Nice addition, what is the ceiling height in the lift area? You couldnt share floor plans of the existing house and second story of the addition, for us to get a better idea of the size and layout of the whole house?
