I picked this neat old herbrand ratchet up today at the fleamarket, I have never seen one before and this one was gummed up at first until I took it apart and cleaned and oiled it up!!!
Check it out:thumbup:

Cool find!!
I was thinking it was a 1960's ratchet but double checked with the alloy artifacts website. He has one over there and states that by 1960 they changed the design to the style you have.
The Herbrand ratchets seem fairly rare for some reason. I have an older slide shift lever model but it needs a new pawl.
How many teeth does the gear have?

Dang it, another one I'll have to watch for! Well actually, I've already got three in 1/2 drive - just that none of them are Herbrand:

A Vi-Chrome, a Bon-E-Con, and just recently, a very nice chromed Bonney.

Only Herbrands I've seen/have are either the older ones with a slide button (or older yet with a lever switch), or some much newer ones with plain block lettering, no country-of-origin, and a really cheap import feel.

Now the big question is, who actually made these style ratchets? Did Herbrand make the Bonney branded ones, or vice-versa? I'd say it's a fairly safe (and obvious) bet that these date from the Kelsey-Hayes/Triangle 1960's eras when Bonney, Utica, and Herbrand were falling under one ownership roof, but who actually made them?

That's a nice find!

When I look at that pic of the three ratchets I think of the very old Bonney ratchets I have from the 20's or 30's and I notice the directional shift pawl of those in the pic looked the same as my crude old Bonney ratchets from back when.

Wow, I've got one that looks identical but it says "DAYTON CHGO-USA" on it. Too bad the selector lever is missing. Anyone heard of Dayton ratchets??

I agree about the KH/Triangle link. I think the new factory was in South Carolina. I have noticed that about this time period the Herbrand tool line changed dramatically. It seems that all the old Herbrand designs went out the window after the move. I would guess it's more of a Bonney design and like hholmberg pointed out that shift lever screams Bonney.
