Guys,

What is the best way to insulate these old wires - electrical tape, shrinkable sleeve or something else?

Thanks.

If you can slip on heat shrink tubing that's what I'd use. (maybe a double layer)

If not then I'd use this (it insulates well but has no mechanical strength so is only good if the wires don't move much:

I would not use electricians tape. It get's slimy in heat. Glass cloth tape is better. (3M #27 or #66)

i would replace them, but try to keep them looking original... otherwise, cloth tape or shrink tube, but to shrink tube them the right way, looks like you would have to cut them anyway.

When you say replace you mean chop the visible part and splice? Or unwind/free them completely and then splice? You can say I've never done this before, hence all the questions.

Many thanks for the help guys.

As long as the actual conductors are fine I would not break any factory spliced connections.

What's on the other side of that terminal strip?. Are the wires attached to that strip using ring terminals and a threaded nut? If so, slip heat shrink over the terminal and then down the wire. Get the heat shrink with maximum contraction so it'll slip over the terminal yet still shrink to the wire.

Without seeing the bigger picture its hard to say exactly but I think I agree that replacing the wires is the way ahead. it does kind of look like things it could become a nightmare if you have to cut the cloth bandings in which case I think I would snip of the connectors and sleeve the wires in heat-shrink possibly then cover those with a fibre sleeve to keep the original look. Then crimp new connectors on the ends.
Try RS for the stuff you need: http://uk.rs-online.com/web/

The conductors look okay to me but I will check their condition to see if they need replacing at all. I have cloth tape but wouldn't want to butcher the motor if I don't have to. Yes, the other end are rings, same as in the picture. Will post some pictures when done.

Thanks.

When all the wire you can see is bad, chances are good all the wire you can't see is bad too, so replace is the way to go.
