So I saw an ad for a "1970's Snapon toolbox" on the Chicago craigslist sunday afternoon... it 'looked like' a well used taco wagon and some type of smaller top box. Guy selling said it was pretty well used and somewhat abused. He got it from a guy he worked with who owed him some money and now he was out of work and needed to sell it so he was asking $250 for both... i couldnt ask for his address fast enough

When i got there he was waiting out side for me. Box looked clearly used/abused and neglected since new, we both laughed that the prev owner (and orginal owner) most likely never lubed the slides or cleaned them and how it was beat and the drawers didnt open n close etc... I offered $100 and paid $120 for both the top box KR-533B and the KR-562A bottom

When i got it home and unloaded by my self, no easy task i think its 350LB or so empty. i wrestled to get the drawers out.... holy beat to **** friction slides batman... never seen something so used n abused... i dont have as many "before" pictures as id like but even after i cleaned it up its still rough. im debating weather i should try and sell it or keep it to use in my woodshop as an outfeed table foor my tablesaw (assuming i can get the height adjusted etc)

*IF* I keep and repaint im thinking either hammered rustoleum in black, red or dark grey (current color of some cabs in my woodshop) or possibly rollon bedliner and flat black.
im hoping the 'hammered' look will save me by covereing most of the blimishes in the surface (small dents etc) im not skilled enough to remove after i sandblast it. my concern is the drawer sides/slide area as id be going from Snapon red to one of the aforementioned colors as i doubt rustoleum will hold up to grease or sliding in the slide channels.... hmmmmm???

*IF* i sell it leave it as is and try my best to make a few bucks and buy a better box.

Ive named it the "Tijuana Taco Wagon".... why Tijuana??? this thing is more beat on and used n abused in current shape than a Tijuana Hookers Box after a long days night :pimpflash

rest of pics here: http://s103.photobucket.com/user/rsieracki/library/KR533B AND KR562A

I finished degreasing around half of the slides tonight.. only half as the other half are total trash (bent, splitting, twisted, worn etc) i will be ordering some from snappy this evening. i plan on usuing some of the better drawers from the top box for the side/shorter drawers on the Taco wagon... All drawers are WELL used n a abused (bent etc) and the top box has a 'top' that missing the struts, a busted piano hinged and cracked corners from rust/fatigue etc. i dont want the top box anyways and as long as the drawers interchange ill make a good set for the Wagon.

the more i look at and think about the abuse and neglect this box has seen i want to kick the original owner square in the ***.

After sand blasting, priming and a coat of Rustoleum sunrise red 7/23/13

this was after the first spray and rolled on coat. it has been sanded with 220, 'filler' spot primed in the 'troubled spots' and resprayed and rolled again since these pics were taken .. thinking another coat or 2 to get a good thickness on it. those who pay attention will notice i ground/cut off the halfassed angle iron tabs welded on to use a pipe to block the drawers... i chose not to weld up (i dont know how) or bondo up the holes.... yet anyways. i may later or i may just trim/frame the top when i build the butcherblock top as the top egdes are a bit beat and bent anyways

*drawers and doors will be done next*

yeah i just finished ordering some new friction slides thru snap on... some of the drawers are a bit bent but i dont see them in the parts catalogue. its a shame when you can see the PO just neglected something so much.

oh and i have no keys... and i havent yet to drill the back cabinate lock as im going to "try" and find a key thru a locksmith somehow. im guessing by the trash only that was left behind n under the drawers no treasures are in there tho. :(

... i just had to rescue it but i dont need more projects so im torn on if i should sell or restore and keep.

Get number off front of lock and take it to SO dealer so he can get you a replacement key. Worked for me in a similar situation.

I've been looking for a taco cart for a while now... even as beat up as that one is, the price is hard to ignore.

That was a great deal, even at $200. What made you offer the so much lower $100? Just being cheap?

I don't think that looks bad at all, especially the inside. Overall it looks grimy, but not rusted. What is so worn about the friction slides? Are they worn through the channels on the box / drawer? Or are the slides worn on the edge where the metal is folded over?

As others have said, snap on can get you a key for the older box. It actually is another company that they send you to, but I don't remember off the top of my head. I think they are around ~$8 per key.

In my neck of the woods people would be wanting $800+ for that setup. Heck I think the top box alone would have been good at $100.

Any which way great deal. If you sell it do you plan on fixing it up first? How much would you sell it for?

One thing BEFORE you toss the old slides, you may want to check with snap on to see if slides are still available for that box. They don't make slides for some of the older not so common boxes anymore. Just FYI

EDIT Looks like the slides are still available from snap on. Avg. $8 each. I would try to salvage as many of the old ones as I can.

No not cheap.. this was used n abused, when I got one of the drawers open (rest were jammed closed) so I made my assessment off that. there is also some half assed L brackets to use with a bar and padlock welded on to the frame. no keys, a lacked back panel etc... i didnt hold a gun to his head and he didnt have to sell for that. truth be told, i didnt want it as i didnt need another project but i figured i was there, the seller just wanted to move/sell it so why not. had the drawers opened and closed and it was clean I would have paid the 250. The seller should have cleaned it up before listing. For all I knew I was buying something unusable once I did get it all apart.

Slides are twisted, bent, split, etc. When i got it home and wrested the drawers out i saw the drawers were all mangled etc... im gussing the 'homemade' locking sytem was that the PO eff'd up the drawers so bad the factory system no longer worked.... I have my work cut out for me to make it an $800 box... i dont work for free just like paint, abrasives, etc cost money.

as far as the top box goes... ill sell it to you for $100 seeing as you feel the top alone is worth that... :)

If you make the effort to fix it up, you may as well plan on keeping it. Otherwise you're going to put way too much sweat and effort into it that won't be worth your time for the return you get from a sale.

I definitely don't need one of those, but I would've bought it too and found a place for it. :)

OK, so it was not well represented in the ad? I didn't gather that from the first post. Since that is the case then I agree that was good to make the lower offer.

Get me some more pics, you cover shipping and I will buy that top box for $100 (seriously).

I was really surprised when I found that snap on still offered all of the drawer slides for your box. It seems to be hit and miss on which one they still offer. Out of curiosity did they warranty them or did you have to purchase all of them?

Well date night at the quarter carwash was productive.... 2 bottles of spray degreaser, 2 hours of my time and $18 in quarters later i have somewhat cleaner drawers that still need a sandblast/wire wheeling and paint...

here are some before pics... (more in the album linked in the first post)

AFTER PICS WILL BE TAKEN AND POSTED TOMORROW... AFTER THEY DRY AND THE SUN COMES OUT... THERE STREWN AROUND MY PATIO TO AIR DRY...

Not so much misrepresented as just in far worse shape then i could have imagined.... once again the seller made no effort to even unjam the drawers or clean the assorted ****/dirt/etc out of the one or 2 drawers that even opened.

Tried to get a set of keys from LDV and Snap On for my KR-53, no joy. Bought a replacement off ebay, no fit and no joy there either. Locksmith had the lock apart and back together with a new Key inside of 10 minutes. I wouldn't drill the lock, pick it open and you can rekey/reuse it.

Yep, that's an ugly baby, but the price was right.

If I were going to use it, I'd just remove the welded lock hasp, scuff it down with Scotchbrite pads on a sander, red primer where there's bare metal. When dry, wipe it down with WD40 and put it back in service.

You're already upside-down in the labor investment. Keep it and use it for a while. If it doesn't fit your needs, you can always break even and you'll have owned a taco cart. Like you, the last thing I need is another project, but I'd have bought those two for that money.

no kidding on being upside down on the labor investment lol.

after degreasing/pressure washing the drawers them dry in the sun... and taking mom out for mothersday i got to work banging and bending away trying to straighten some bent metal as best as i can. here are some pics of that. what i need is to learn how to weld so i can reinforce some of the drawers as i have an idea of adding some angle iron, c-channel etc to stiffen them a bit.... or if someone locally wants to help me out.....

BEFORE

SAME SPOT DIFFERENT ANGLE

AFTER A GOOD WORKOVER WITH MY FLANGING PLIERS (ATLEAST THATS WHAT I THINK THEIR CALLED...BOUGHT THEM YEARS AGO).

SAME DRAWER, SAME SPOT, 2 DIFF VIEWS

AFTER I BENT IT 'BACK' WITH MY BIG PLIERS AND SOME METAL AND CLAMPS FOR ASSISTANCE

ANOTHER DRAWER.... WHY I NEED A 'FRIEND' WITH A WELDER

CANT REALLY TELL IN PIC BUT SPOTWELD IS BROKEN

SOME DRAWERS ARE FINE, SOME ARE JACKED... I TRIED PHOTOING THE WORSE 2... LOTS BETTER AFTER I 'WORKED THEM OVER' BUT FAR FROM PERFECT.

or

- valspar tractor paint in Massey Red (i hear its very close to snapon red)

added photos to post #2 after a coat of rustoleum sunrise red

im currently trying to find replacent corner guards... i have 3 of the 4 old ones for patterns but they are far too mangled to reuse. im looking for 2 pieces of U channel with and ID 7/8" wide, 7/8" deep (a little play on that) and 32" long with a wall thickness of 1/16" - somewhat less than 1/8" (this 1/16" thickness is in 7/8 SQUARE inner corner u channel is the hard part) 1/8 it too thick to fit in the slots in the frame where it 'tucks' in.

snap on says corners are NLA

well its *almost* done.... in Rustoleum Sunrise Red (many, many rolled on glossy coats sanded between with 600-1000) drawers are 'lined' with Dulicolor roll on and spray on bed liner as is the top of the box. i have one drawer that the slide is worn/cracked that i need someone skilled to weld for me and its all done. i also have new castors courtesy on snapon for it along with the original restored snapon badge and new locks.. heres a few pics as you will wee its partially filled and that my wood shed/shop is a mess

peeking in the bottom right corner in the above pictures is the Delta/Rockwell 15-655 drill press i 'restored' and built a rolling base for at the same time i did the taco-cart... hence the delay... along with life :) ...and along the way i pickup and repainted my very first vidmar..

Considering what your KR562 looked like when you got it, You have done a fabulous job on restoring it. I have one also, but I purchased it brand new in 1982. I didn't let it get beat up though.
