Has anyone built any of the projects from the old Popular Science magazines? Since they're all on Google Books now you could almost build an entire workshop full of tools for cheap.

Where do I buy a Raytheon CK-1021 Geiger Mueller Tube? Or a Kelley-Koett K-23 tube? I need an Eveready 493 300V battery too.

Can someone help me source the saw blade for the tractor attachment shown on page 211 of the July 1950 issue?

Someone on GJ needs to build the Machinist's Toolbox on page 183! (July 1950)

Literally, there must be thousands of great ideas in there. Saw a ball jar used as a mouse and gopher trap.

I love reading through the old popular mechanics / science and the like magazine projects. I have built a few of the smaller ones. Back when people weren't so up tight about safety and when hands on learning was encouraged. Boats, cars, minibikes, forges, furnaces, planes, spot welders, other "cool" things.

Some of the instructions will give you a good laugh. Something like "go down to the local hardware store and buy X pounds of some super dangers, explosive chemical." No warning or the like, just do it. :rocker:

What kind of **** do you see in the mags these day? How to write a software app for this or that. Maybe a potato clock?

Sometime ago, I bought a complete set of "Popular Science Do It Yourself Encyclopedia" from the year 1955. I've spent hours upon hours reading through them and enjoying a peek back into a far more innocent time. The first thing that strikes you is just how many of the suggested projects would have Homeland Security coming down on you, like white on rice. Heck, even asking someone where to purchase some of the materials, and chemicals that were commonly used and readily available would get you locked away for terrorism, these days.

I think the magazines now days are all just advertising. Not many have good DIY projects without trying to sell some sort of product or tool.

I think I have the same set. I think I've read the entire set cover to cover more than 100 times. I still have some of the projects that were built from those plans like this one

http://books.google.com/books?id=Qu...6AEwAA#v=onepage&q=hoop wing airplane&f=false

There was also a hovercraft plan that I built using those tiny Cox engines for model airplanes. I wonder if I could get it working again.

^^^^ Looks like the hydroplane my neighbor built with his youngest son. Amazing how fast it would go with so little Hp once it was on plane...
