As a UPS driver I see lots of things. Well I've noticed this compressor sitting outside, on the side of this building that I deliver to for months now. So I ask the boss guy if he wants to sell it. Said he wants $150 for this 60 gallon compressor. Says only thing wrong is motor is shot. I can turn the pulley very easily. My only concern is I stuck a pen to check oil and it was basically empty went all the way to bottom and only showed like 1/2" and was milky as you can see in the pics. So worth buying and getting new motor for it or keep looking? Hope this makes sense as I'm typing this out on my phone.

Pass unless you wanna rebuild that air pump for a cost of 200-300 bucks or buy it slap a hf 150.00 pump on it and you have a nice compressor off him 100.00 imo

If I was you I'd take the chance and change the oil in it right away. Then take the motor apart clean and inspect, smell and try to determine if the magic smoke has been let out. If it has rebuild motor or replace it.

Well motor is missing. He claims they sent him 2 replacement ones but both are wrong. He ended up buying a new 80gal. One and this one been sitting. After talking with him I get the feeling he doesn't really know what he's talking about.

I would personally pass. Unless I just happened to have a proper motor sitting around already.

I can foresee that being a money pit where you will end up with more money into it that it will be worth.

^ ^ ^ This. Looks like money pit for sure. Only if you're a glutten for punishment (ie want to overhaul compressor) . . AND . . . you talk him down to $30 to $50 . . . then it might be worth your time.

There are much better deals out there on CL for working compressor.

We are a campbell Hausfeld dealer/warranty center. Assume the pump is ok and you need a motor.
Motors are around $180. 180 + 150? What else is bad/damaged? May as well buy a new one and get the year warranty.

The tank is worth $100 maximum, to someone who has a compressor already. If you don't have a compressor you can get an new one for $450-$500 everyday at HD/Lowes. I wouldn't touch it unless I was looking for a tank only to add capacity to an existing system.

The tank label says three years old, and a four year warranty??????

and appears that ""that thing got pulled out of the shop and left uncovered" Me: ask if he has the motor, pulley and belt, and make an offer of $___ That compressor may have him ticked off enough that he may be glad to see it gone..

If it's been there for months....offer him $50-$75 and if he doesn't take the offer then, he might the next time you are out. If you do get it, change the oil immediately.

I'd offer $75 cash and if he doesn't take it, walk. The milky oil is likely from condensate, maybe from just sittings.

Same here - lowball him with a $50 offer and walk away if he doesn't accept it. It will take some work and clearly he's not putting forth much effort to sell it. He would probably accept the offer (I mean, seriously, he couldn't fix it).

I'll pay $100 for it which includes the pulley from the old motor. A 2HP 3400-3500RPM can be found on ebay for about $200 shipped.

Id offer him 75, but I would love to have it, just because its a deal and needs to be fixed.

I would only take it for free. Then, going by my life-long record, I'd rebuild it and probably end up spending almost as much as a new one would cost. I am kinda stupid sometimes, but I am always up to a challenge.

But I would not pay anything for it [ok, ok, unless I needed the tank for extra air storage or something]. Otherwise, good decision to just walk away.

Pump is cheap to rebuild. motors can find a used one for a good deal. Around here your lucky if you can find a used 80 gal tank for under $125. New 80gal tank is $350

Well got it for free! Ran that route again and got talking to the guy and he said if I just wanted it I could have it. He also has a box of parts with old motor that he said is bad. (hopefully just a capacitor or something) Just got it home and noticed it had about what seemed like a gallon of water that came out after draining it. The drain valve was open but clogged with ****. So what's the next thing I should do? Add oil, turn by hand couple times then drain to kinda flush it? Then try to get a motor and fire it up?
