Hello everyone..

After being corrupted by all the great garages here, I have started on doing up our garage. I am going to blatantly and shamelessly copy ideas from everyone here, hence the title! :) Caveat Emptor! :p

Now, about the garage, it is a 20x23 attached two car garage. The garage will be used for the cars and to store bikes and misc garage stuff. It will not be a working garage, ie, no shop et al. The goal for the garage makeover would be to have a aesthetically pleasing garage to pull in everyday after work! I realize that sounds vain, but that is really my goal, to have something nice and clean with no clutter.

I am not handy and frankly scared of doing things myself - or you can call me lazy! So I will be getting help with the work, except for the floors which I am planning on doing myself if I go with the garage tiles.

Alright, so in a lot of aspects, this would be a boring thread for most here - it is not a shop, ideas copied from others, will not be doing this myself and to top it, one of the cars in the garage will be a minivan, yup, a minivan! If you are still reading this, whats wrong with you! :D

So here is what I am planning - I broke the garage process into 4 parts - Walls, Floors, Cabinets & Misc

Walls - I did not want a gray when I first started looking. But after going through so many of them, grays are not bad at all. Still didnt want to go all gray, so it is a blackish gray lower half, bluish gray upper half / ceilings, and the customary red stripe(!).

Flooring - I never expected this to be such a confusing area but it truly was and I am still undecided, although I am heavily leaning towards the garage tiles such as GarageTrac / Swisstrax / Racedeck.

Cabinets - I dont need a lot of space, but need enough bulk space primarily for yard stuff and other bulky items. I am thinking two tall cabinets and two base cabinets. Will go with metal cabinets to "man up" the garage, either Black and Decker or New Age.

Misc - This would be everything else that doesnt fall in the above three categories, primarily wall decor ideas that I will steal from you all! Saving this for last..

Onto whats happenning:

This is after Day 1 - after we emptied out the garage and the remaining time was spent prepping the wall. By the way, the angle of the camera makes the garage look much bigger, it is a standard two car garage.

This is after Day 2, wall and door primer was done and floor cleaned:

Thats where we are!

Good luck, it seems like a good starting point for sure! I like your idea for colors as well, how blue was the upper-gray going to be? I did a very rough 'chop of you area -- seem like a lot of lighting may be needed to offset a dark floor (assuming dark racedeck tiles)

I also like the trimmed out stairs that lead into the home; I'd use the space on each side for cabinets and bench space, maybe with loft storage in the ~2ft space above the door and proposed cabinets.

I'm still very undecided on storage/cabinets for my garage, but I like the New Age ones you might be using. The only advice I can offer here is to avoid plastic or fiberboard (MDF); some of the nicer laminate MDF may be okay , but none will be too keen on any extended exposure to moisture, which can make future clean-ups a hassle as well as raise concerns about any leaking containers you may experience. Plastic is durable but the decent ones I've seen are all bulky (to make them strong) compared to their metal counterparts. When space is a limiting factor (and it always is for us!) metal cabinets will have thinner walls and shelves, allowing for slightly more space.

Edit: Here is some inspiration for you, a great place to park a car and store things with a little bit of workspace tossed in. Subtract the workspace and you've got what sounds like your goal.

Good luck! No shame in not being an expert at all. I found it fun to try a couple things in the garage that i may have been more hesitant to attempt in the house. And yes there are a ton of ideas on here to inspire you enjoy!

EDIT: Oh yea and a shed outside of the garage if possible will be like extending your garage by saving you space with the outdoor lawn stuff out of the way.

Whoah! The "rough chop" is awesome, thanks for taking the time to do this!

The upper gray turned out to be more of a light blue and the lower half turned out to be more black than gray... both are actually fine with me, the colors keep changing!

By the time I saw your sketch, much of the painting was already kinda done, but I liked the way you did the stripe, ie, rise it to match with the stair wall. I think I am going to keep it the way it is, shouldve seen this pic earlier! :)

And yes, to the right of the stairs is where the cabinets should go and to the left will be the two garage cans tucked away. And yes, going the metal cabinet route for sure, need to decide and get them going..

Rick's garage is definitely an inspiration, its the first thread on here that I read through every posting! I am a Audi guy as well and just love his garage. I will definitely be stealing the wall decal ideas from him!

That would be nice, but I dont think our HOA allows sheds, not sure. But even if that is the case, we dont have enough lawn stuff to have a shed.. at least, not yet! :)

This is after Day 3, upper walls and ceiling all done. The lower half not done as yet. We have this concrete lower wall that is a pain, the white you see on the picture is just the primer, need to paint that and do the second coat. And then the stripe...

Regarding the primer for the lower concrete wall, based on a posting on this form, got the concrete primer:

End of Day 4, paint is done!

Did a 3 1/2" red border, didnt want to go bigger than that, but now on the fence. Maybe I should go lil bit broader? Should sleep on it..

So 1 out of 4 done, need to decide on flooring next - decisions, decisions!

Have you thought of painting the lower concrete in black? I think it would "hide" it a lot more..

Looks really nice. I would have torn out the railings (unless needed).

That looks really good. You may want to look at Husky cabinets also. There are a quite a few forum members (myself included) that have used them, and they would look good with that color scheme.

Looks great so far. I'd do the door frame in the same dark gray you have on the bottom. Then paint the door in the light color and the "grooves" of the panels the dark gray.

I would paint the door, the trim in the a semi gloss finish in the lighter blue for a nice clean monochromatic look. Please don't go multi color on the door and trim as was recommended, it'll look terrible and way too busy. I liked the paint scheme without the red stripe! Looked much cleaner and less like a car dealership service garage. ;)

Nice job. Gotta tell ya it's all about the stripe dude.
Save some money and get a project started. I find the easiest way to start is to strip an old Porsche down and box up all the parts. Soon the wife will start bugging you about putting it back together. Tell her you need more tools. Then you'll have to store the tools, not to mention all those boxes of parts. You'll pick up new skills as the years go by. Your kids will be there to help out, grand kids too. Then just before they ship you off to that big uncluttered garage in the sky, the grand kids will clean out your garage, sell all the boxes of parts and the old unfinished Porsche shell. When they finally uncover the walls, they'll wonder why anyone would put a red stripe in the garage.

Well, I guess my big uncluttered garage in the sky most definitely won't have a stripe. Actually, I might consider a stripe if it was VERY subtle tone on tone scheme.

The lower half color is pretty much black, I think the pic shows it lighter than what it is. Besides, if I go black black, then it would cave up the garage I would think.

x2. Thought about painting the trim of the door frame as well?

I didnt think through the door frame trim color as suggested here, will keep this for last.. thanks for the tips!

I'm glad to see my garage has made such a strong impression on you. The colour scheme has evolved over time, and continues to do so. I wouldn't stress too much about the finer paint touches at this point. I'd move on to the flooring stage and then go back and revisit your paint scheme. If you end up going RaceDeck (I'm a big fan), you'll find the garage takes on a massive boost in appearance. Anyway, you are definitely on track to greatness. I'll be following your progress closely. Good luck!

Day 5 Update - decided on RaceDeck and ordered it! Couldn't keep going back and forth with all the options and just pulled the trigger on it.

Given I have to pay for all other type installs, RaceDeck was the better choice comparatively. I didn't go GarageTrac since they don't have the FreeFlow equivalent and SwissTrax was more expensive - although they have more color choices. So RaceDeck it is - I will admit I have a lil bit of buyer's remorse (do I really need this jazzy stuff?!).

The floor design is similar to Rick's (and I know there are others too) - black and red border with graphite middle. Rick, your royalty will be in the form of beer if you visit the DC area.. :)

Anyway, RaceDeck said 4 to 5 business days for delivery, so I am looking at mid next week delivery.. Till then, let me ponder about "the big uncluttered garage in the sky" having stripes vs no stripes vs subtle stripes vs checks... :)

Looks good, reminds me of a Ford dealer I use to work for 'back in the day'. I'm sure it'll really pop once the cabinets are installed.

That looks really good. You may want to look at Husky cabinets also. There are a quite a few forum members (myself included) that have used them, and they would look good with that color scheme.

Trying to decide on cabinets and want to go with Red to make it pop and match the (soon to be) red border on the floor and the red stripe on the wall. Leaning towards the NewAge bold series: http://www.newageproducts.com/bold-series-images/

The other option is to go with gray, Husky cabinets, as EMC2 suggested. But not sure if gray is going to dull it down. It looks GREAT in EMC2 garage, but he is got a nice color on the wall to contrast the gray. Or, go with Black and Decker black cabinet. Red, gray or black! Probably going to go red, going to make a trip to HomeDepot and Lowes to look at Husky and Black&Decker one more time.. Decisions, decisions! :willy_nil

By the way EMC2, you sure have a classy garage! Not to mention the Porsche lettering which has been much copied over here! And ofcourse, it helps to have a big Porsche parked in that classy garage; my neighbor drives a white Panamera and it sure has a strong road presence, great car!

If you go with red cabinets, buy them FIRST, then match the red paint for the stripe since the cabinets will be up against the stripe it will be more noticeable if the red is off, just hope the reds in the cabinets and RD tiles match well enough. Yes, I'm particular, details make all the difference.

Day 6 update - cabinets ordered! Costco currently has a sale on New Age products and that made my choice easier. Check it out, the sale ends 6/9.

I guess I am done with all the big ticket items, whew, not looking forward to the credit card statement! :D

I will most probably end up redoing the stripe it looks like, yes, will take the cabinet door to Home Depot to find the closest red to it..

Dubber, your garage floor and mine would be identical! :)

And the wait begins for Costco and RaceDeck to deliver..
