Dear friends and fellow Garage Journal members,

As some of you may have known, we have had wildfires sweeping through Colorado nearly the entire month of June. We (our local tool/garage group w/ several GJ'ers) recently were informed that on June 11 a friend and fellow GJ'er had to evacuate his home in Black Forest, CO, along with his family and animals due to a fire that had just started.

Here is one of the first articles on the fire:

http://www.9news.com/rss/story.aspx?storyid=340545

The number homes destroyed kept rising. The day after he informed us, the fire had claimed about 50 structures. A day after that, and the toll had risen to 379.

On June 13, just two days later, we received the disheartening news from him that with visual confirmation of his housing block, his entire property had been destroyed by the fire for a total loss. This includes his house, his garage/shop, and a brand new barn that he had just finished getting the sheetrock up in.

As it stands, with over 500 structures lost, the Black Forest Fire is the #1 most destructive fire in Colorado history.

If you are interested in learning more about the fire, this is a good info page:

http://inciweb.org/incident/3424/

We have been in constant communication with him and he and his family are safe and have a roof over their heads. We have organized a work party to head out there this coming Saturday and help him sift through the ash and start organizing things. I will take some additional pictures and try to update this thread as appropriate.

Once he was allowed back in (just this past weekend) He sent us some updates with some pictures. I have his permission/approval to post them -

The house:

The barn (just built):

The shop:

I was down at his place a while back when he helped me seat the arbor bearing for a vintage Atlas table saw that I was working on and got to take a tour of his shop and take some pictures. These photos were posted to my GJ thread. The before/after is pretty hard-hitting. The 'before' shots are the actual tools.

If you notice, the badge on the Walker Turner band saw is missing - everything that was not solid steel or iron melted. It was a very hot fire. At this point little to nothing may be salvageable. We'll see once we get down there on Saturday and start combing through everything. Right now, they have been working through the insurance situation. As you can see, he had a lot of very nice garage equipment, and it is hard to say how the insurance will pan out, especially on vintage equipment.

They are doing okay, but please keep him and his family in your thoughts any prayers. They could really use some encouragement, positive thoughts, anything else you could think of that would help you if you were in his situation. Please feel free to post any of the above in this thread and I will be sharing it with him.

More updates to come.

Glad to hear that no one was hurt. We were just in CO last week and saw some of the fire devastation firsthand. Our thoughts and prayers go out to everyone dealing with these fires. This community I'm sure will band together to help rebuild what was lost.

That is sickening to see, a lifetime of good machines gone. A life time of dreams gone. We are praying that life becomes whole again in the near future.

All I can say is WOW- Glad everybody's OK, The melted tools..... I sure hope he has insurance.

Yes, he does have insurance and did an excellent job documenting everything with photos and video before evacuating. It can only help, but insurance is still a tricky thing. We just had to move offices because our previous office completely flooded and while we had coverage, there are things that insurance wouldn't cover, or things that are devalued, etc.

He's on my list. Glad everyone is ok. At least they have each other. Almost everything else is just material possessions. Things can get better from here.

The main thing is they got out, having dealt with a fire in my own shop I know how much that *****, but losing everything like that really bites. In the end its all stuff and can be replaced. Its going to be a long while(if ever?) before their life gets back to normal. Hopefully they'll get thru it quickly

As someone who has lost many tools to not one but two devastating fires, I do truly feel his loss. The pictures are hauntingly familiar.

I am going to give a word of caution. Please wear some type of repertory filter while going thru the debris. I now have major breathing issues and I feel that all the shop related chemicals may have made the ash toxic.

While it is easy to see all the big stuff that was lost, you will never remember all of it. So this day I still come up with stuff that “oh ****, that wasn’t on the list”. Have the insurance company provide an independent loss consultant, that guy saved me a ton on stuff I would have forgotten.

Although every state is different in regards to insurance, I feel I can offer a great deal of advice when it comes to the shop tools portion of it and when he is ready, I would be glad to talk with him. I am sure I can save him thousands of dollars.

He lost not only his shop and his dreams (future projects) but he also lost his home, his one place of safety and comfort. I can only imagine how terrible that is.

Very, very sorry to hear about his loss, but those are just material things. The main thing is that the family and him made it out safely. Red Cross will help with some things and hopefully the insurance will cover almost everything. It's a tough thing. Just right before my wife and I got together, she had a fire and lost every single thing she owned other than her car and her dog. SHe had lost her parents before that and any pictures and mementos were also lost. She still cries to this day if she really starts talking about it.

Tell your friend and our fellow GJ member that prayers are being sent out for him and if they need anything at all Red Leader, please let us know on here.

Keep us informed, my thoughts and prayers to all. Get a detailed list of all things possible for insurance and/or fema. Hopefully the insurance will be gratitious in this situation, but certainly not a time to rush, as things will continue to pop up.

Seen it go both ways, insurance reimburses total loss, and insurance only pays for replacement - which is hard to do and only pays upon receipt. Knew a guy who got burnt down and had a steinway baby grand that got damaged, his insurance paid for restore in which it was sent to NY for 6 months and about 80k - still has it. He got replacement on all his photography equip and tools that were damaged w/o having to go buy. Big difference.

Always better to have the money up front, imo and always know that you do not have to settle and matters can be taken to insurance commish for further settlement, or litigation if necessary.

Start writing down EVERYTHING now and build a list while it's fresh.

Glad the family is O.K. and this too shall pass, but must have patience. God Bless

Dude... that just brought tears to my eyes. Being a So. Cal. native I've seen a lot of destruction brought on by brush fires and can totally relate to what these folks are going thru. I'm glad they have insurance, if there's anything we can do, anything, please let us know.

Im so glad thay are ok! Very sorry to see that happen! That would be a very tough situation to deal with, and then add the stress of dealing with the insurance company...and in the back of your mind thinking about how when its all done, you have to rebuild your life. Id like to share this, because it has helped me deal with some of my problems>>1002724_477765585650702_1803412578_n.jpg

What a shame to loose everything. We're glad your family and pets are fine. Everything else is just stuff. You are faced with many challenges in the coming months about what to do, where and if to rebuild. Blood pressures will rise but think of it as business and stay on good terms if you can with your insurance agent. They may offer so help when it comes to the adjuster and settlement. Be happy and enjoy the ride.

Heartbreaking to see ones Home and dreams gone in an instant...But if that last picture is of him and his family, That's truly what matters!

Sobering reminder, we all need to be extra careful this fire season..Looks to be a bad one!

I just got home from a few weeks at my cabin where I watched from a distance several thousand acres burn. Thanks to some IDIOTS target shooting even with the Fire Ban pretty much state wide!

God bless your friend and his family...Prayers sent.

That fire missed my brother's place by less than a quarter mile, so I can relate to what he went thru - my brother was in the mandatory evac area.

In all the years l lived in the Springs I don't remember fires like this in the city, what few fires did happen were always up in the mountains and usually caused by lightning....

Good luck to him, but like the others have said - not to minimize his pain or loss, but it's just stuff, you can always get more stuff.

Good luck on the rebuild, and I'm just glad he and family made it out safe.

Do they have any idea yet as to the origin of the fire? I kow that when it first started, they said on the news that there wasn't any lightning strikes that would have started it. I haven't heard anything since that time.

Black Forest isn't in the city either. It's northeast of the Springs and it was bound to burn one day. I grew up out there and my parents' old home is gone now. Luckily they sold that place and moved a bit further out of the trees. My dad was always worried about fire and that's ultimately what got them to leave. He couldn't keep up with the necessary mitigation around the house.

Being from the area I know many families in this situation and my own memories of how the area looked growing up all have me feeling terrible for those caught up in it.

I heard it was a cigarette tossed out of a car, I don't have any official confirmation of that, but my brother who lives there said thats what he heard.

I know when I lived there the Black Forest area was not considered part of the city of C.Springs and maybe it still isn't, but if you go there now, housing developements are all around it, including the one my brother lives in. The city has grown it's way out there.....

Over 500 homes destroyed.......a terrible loss.

My thoughts and prayer are with him and his family. I just had a less extensive issue from Hurricane Sandy. Being displaced ***** and makes you feel very vulnerable.

Wow make everything else seem like little stuff. Heart goes out to them.
I wonder how I would deal with that. Be easy just switch gears and take up hiking again. Where would you even start?

Godspeed.

Very sad to see the pics, but it shows the incredible heat and devastation of the fires. Will say a prayer for him and his family.
