Hello... I just registered minutes after finding this site, as it looks like you guys could be very helpful in outfitting my new-to-me metal shop.

My wife and I recently bought a house on an acre with a 20x20 custom metal shop. When shopping for homes, space for a garage/shop was a requirement. I had planned on having a 30x30 shop built on whatever property we bought, but we ended up finding the place that already had a 20x20 shop on it. The shop is obviously smaller than I had wanted, but I figure I will make it work for now and look into expanding it at some point in the future.

For now, I need to figure out how to modify what I have to make it work for me. I'm sure I will be asking several novice questions in the coming days/weeks/months, and I hope some of you will be able to help me.

Pictures of what I am starting with are attached.

Welcome aboard Titus. I hadn't ever heard of Nevada, Tex. I did a map search and you are about 110 miles Northeast of me. I am in Glen Rose which is Southwest of the Metroplex on US 67. Hope you enjoy this forum. It gets VERY interesting at times.:)

Thanks... Don't feel bad about not hearing of Nevada, as I had never heard of it until we started our search for a new place and we were less than 30 miles away!

I wish the Glen Rose area would have been convenient for us, as I would have loved to be that close to Motor Sports Ranch.

your door is offcenter..................you'll do well here, welcome..........

LOL

I did find that odd. For some reason, the prior owner was set on a 10' wide off-centered door. I think it would have worked better if he had gone with an 8' door, but now it is what it is. The funny thing is that it tricks the mind into thinking the shop is smaller than it is. I have had to pull out the measuring tape twice now to convince friends that it really is 20' wide.

well depending on whether looking from in or out you could be left or right of center in your views[as far as the door goes but you can run with it as you see fit] good to see you have a sense of haha...........so what's the plan for the shop?.............storing garden furniture?.............don't be ashamed when it happens, swimbo makes the rules ..........

so what's the plan for the shop

When I am done with it, it will be a fully equipped mens clubhouse. Filled with tools, workbench, and lift, for working along with A/C, a TV, a pinball machine, wireless internet, and refrigerator to make it comfortable. The shop is keyed to a different key than the house, and the wife and daughter have not gotten a copy. :bounce:

On a side note, When I was planning to build a shop from scratch prior to buying this place, I had hoped to make it 2 story so my pool table could go upstairs. As it stands, the pool table must live in the house. :( My wife tells me life is about compromises. Did I mention she isn't getting a key to the shop?

Time for an update. The shop is slowly looking more like home....

I made stud wall pieces that I inserted inside the steel wall structure, bolted them in, and covered in pegboard. The supplies ran $150 for 1 wall, so I only did 1 wall 4 now.

There were no lights in the shop when we moved in. I picked up four 4' twin bulb T8 fixtures for now. The box said they hung from adjustable cables which I thought would be perfect for the high ceilings. Turns out they adjusted from 3" to 10", so I made new 3 foot cables. I plan on adding more lights on the walls once all the walls are done.

Here is how it looks now.

The next step is to restore the old BendPak lift and get it working.
