re: snapon TML830 ratchet rebuild

Hey, guys got a Snapon sealed head TML830 long handled 1/4" ratchet; I decided to to take it apart, clean and regrease it. Is not worn much but I figured since it is 1997 vintage it is about time for a go through; the ratcheting action was a little sticky. Every things ready to go back together; the question is the position of the seals. There is 1 for the pawl/lever (pawl seal) and another 1 for the main ratchet gear (gear seal). The seals have a flat side and one with indentions: question does the flat side go against the body on the pawl o-ring and for the main gear is the flat part against the cover plate? I think I have it right but any experiences appreciated! This is probably overkill but I thought I would ask!

I don't know the specifics of that ratchet so I really can't say for sure. What I can say though is that with most seals the flat face is going to be facing outwards and the dimpled or cupped face facing inwards.

From this, I think you probably have them the right way, but I'm sure Merkava or Chad_s would know for sure.

Merkava, you posted that while I was typing, you jumped right on that! I am writing on an iPod touch though...

Thats how I have them positioned at the moment; makes sense to me! Getting the ball bearing/spring reposition with the pawl is a challenge! I chased the ball bearing on the floor 3X now (BOING!!!)! Those dealers must get good at doing this with practice!

I believe ball bearings are magnetically attracted to the floor. They are whenever I handle them anyway. Especially the tiny ones.

Re: snapon TML830 ratchet rebuild

I've got more extra parts than I thought I had. :eek2:

The seals I have, the pawl/lever seal and the drive end seal has grooves on BOTH sides.

The pawl/lever seal has three dots next to the groove on one side; the other side has just the groove; I don't think it makes a difference.

The drive end seal has a groove on BOTH sides ... BUT ... one side has the flap sticking out from being in position so long.
I like to put the flap side facing up towards the friction ball on the drive.

Remember:

The pawl/lever seal goes down first and then the washer goes on top of the seal. Then your pawl goes down on top of the washer.

I grease the O-ring seal around the cover plate to make it's easier for the cover plate to press in. If you're not careful and get in a rush, you'll pinch the O-ring between the plate and the ratchet body.

Grease all the seals before assembly.

Re: snapon TML830 ratchet rebuild

Thanks for checking; I need to get the right lube you mentioned before and now that I've chased down the ball bearing 6X I think I will leave it for tomorrow! I'm getting tired and this is not the type of thing to do late at night when wiped out! Thanks! Merkava!
By the way where did you find the SuperLube 21030 at, any particular stores; I'm gonna try Autozone tomorrow!

Re: snapon TML830 ratchet rebuild

Oh, do you have a trick for installing the ball/spring with the pawl under pressure? I know the craftsman rebuild kets come with a little L shaped tool to hold down the spring/ball to make installing the pawl easy; maybe I'll get one from work tomorrow! Maybe I should take pics! I have generally have not "rebuilt" the older Snapon ratchets because of the peened lever; that always limited the removal of spring/ball.

Re: snapon TML830 ratchet rebuild

I got the SuperLube 21030 at Gordon's Industrial in Fresno. I highly doubt they'd have any at Autozone but you can always Google it.

They've got a special tool for holding the plunger ball; it's Snap-on SPP744. I've got 10 on order!

In the meantime. . .

I get the seal and washer in place.

Then I push the plunger spring and plunger ball in with that little small Craftsman screwdriver; I think the blade is only 1/8" wide.

Then I very carefully bring the pawl down in.

Have I shot the ball across the room? Hell yeah! Never do this anywhere outside though; preferably an empty closed in room with just four walls, a floor and a ceiling! :eek2:

Guess what? I've seen the dealer put the ball in using the special tool AFTER the pawl is in place!!! How sweet would that be?!!? :pimpflash

I "field stripped" the ratchet and cleaned all the parts; paid special attention to not hurting the rubber o-rings with solvent! These parts are really tiny (especially the ball) on a 1/4" ratchet so keep the parts in a container and work in a area that is easy to spot things if they get "shot" away (like the tensioned combo of spring/ball under the pawl).
I got my grease from my Snapon dealer (free, can you believe it!) and now on to the reassembly of the parts.
snaponratchethead.jpg

I cannot see much wear in the head; looks new!
ratchetparts.jpg

The drive parts look pretty pristine; I don't think this ratchet was used much; even though the date code is from 1997! Installed o-ring and washer. Superlube part # 82340
ratchetpawl.jpg
Got the Pawl in..... (kind of a pain; took a couple of tries...); once you get the pawl in; press down on it until you get the lever in and screw in. Put the cover on temporarily; tighten with a screw to keep everything in place. Otherwise before the lever is tightened the ball can get "shot" out from under the pawl and you have to go find it somewhere on your hands and knees on the floor somewhere (ask me how I know!).
ratchetgear.jpg
Gear, cover o-ring and grease installed.... the gasket stuck to the gear when I took the cover off for the photo, I tried to just put it back on but it caused it to bind; so I reinstalled it in the cover again, then it was fine...
ratchetcoverinstalled.jpg
cover installed, make sure you grease the o-ring that is around the cover so it doesn't pinch/bind!
ratchethead.jpg
all screwed tightened, they take a really tiny Torx screwdriver....
ratchetdone.jpg
The cleaning of all the parts and new grease seems to have fixed the stickiness of the ratchet! All done! Woohoo!

Nice detailed pictures. Pictures so clear, Elroy can see that ratchet performing for another 11 years.

Elroy has never had the pleasure of disassembling his sealed snappy, but when the time does arrive is good to know all the "details"

Another benefit of the newer sealed ratchets is the pawl/lever isn't "peened" like the old ones so it is easier to take it all apart; clean and put back together!

Yes that feature was noted and made availble due to your efforts.

Re: snapon TML830 ratchet rebuild

UPDATE: picked up a TM830 today; at the flea, for $5! This one; looked similar to the above inside, from what I can tell (pretty dry; never been opened up, imho). While, I have dual 80s at this point; as my "go to" ratchets, I am still impressed with these older versions, the seals overall... seem to do a pretty good job of keeping these in good shape after all these years (this one; is a 1989 date code). A little surface rust on the gear outside and little inside; a little clean up and lube, seems to be working and looking fine! :3gears: Good job Snap-On; these older designs, are good and have a certain charm, that is lost on the starkly geometic, CNC designs of the dual 80s of today.... :wtf:
