Those look like imported vises, so I'm not sure it's such a hot deal.

But I do like what Woot says, I think this should be the description for GJ Hot Deals forum:
"Nothing feels better than shopping for tools. No, don't fight it. You can feel it in your heart. Shhhh. Shhhh. Go on and buy a tool. There. Didn't that feel… right? Whoa, whoa, WHOA SLOW DOWN! DON'T BUY TOOLS SO FAST! WE CAN'T KEEP UP! My God… we've created a monster."

For the 6" jaw, it's $134 plus $5 shipping or $139 total.

These are still being sold by Grainger for $324

Anybody with any experience with these Palmgren bench vises ??

Looks like Palmgren is major supplier for drill press vises, but not so much for bench vises.

It seems like a pretty good deal, but I don't know enough about bench vises to pull the trigger. Where are all the vise nerds? Hanging out in General Tool discussion?

I didn't mean to offend the vise experts. I know they are not an American Yost or Wilton, but it looks like a good price, on a DI vise, that comes with a lifetime warranty. Granted, we don't know the full details (shipping cost, etc....) to carry out the warranty.

The Sear's Pro 4.5", ~$110-124 on sale, only has a 1 year warranty.

FYI, Palmgren warranty link:
http://www.palmgren.com/images/PGW.pdf

Anyone used these vises?

About WOOT: I have bought from WOOT several times, and at worst, item was shipped in 48hrs.

I'm thinking about a 6", for a second vise. Can one have too many vises? :dunno:

Those suckers are 60,000 PSI, which is a darn good casting. My $500 Yost is the same. Wish I could see more of the jaw inserts to get an idea how they're held in.

Hmmm, I thought that 60Kpsi was at the low end for ductile iron.

Make certain you are comparing the same number, yield vs. tensile strength.

My understanding is that the ranking for desirability was

cast iron (brittle but rigid)
ductile cast iron (round carbon nodules stop crack propagation)
martensitic steel
(non-martensitic) cast steel
forged steel

I'd like to know if they're any good also. That 6" model looks tempting.

I also wonder what the deal is on those grinders.

The specs state the warranty as "1 year". Better check which is it: lifetime warranty or 1 year warranty.

Yea, woot has a lot of SP's on their website, so anyone that ever buys anything, should double check sizes, etc.....744, 745, & 746 are supposed to be covered under Lifetime Warranty. Grainger states Lifetime Warranty as well.

I ordered the 6" version on Sunday and it came today. I'd been waiting for the Craftsman Pro 4.5" to go on sale but when I saw a 6" vise for only a bit more I jumped on it.

I've only had time for a quick inspection but the vise looks great. The casting is nicely finished, the lead screw turns with little effort, and the jaws line up perfectly. As long as nothing breaks when I use it to press U joints I'll be happy with the purchase.

Over the years, I've noticed Woot will often relist items for sale in a "Sellout" or regrouped sale, months later or at the end of quarter. For that reason, a sale somewhere else, and in case someone needs a future reference. I'm posting pics, n giving an initial quick review.

I ordered the 6" and Mobile base. Both look very good, or great for the price.

I don't consider myself a vise expert, but will list some items that will hopefully help.
-Five turns per one inch of movement.
-Pipe & face jaws are removable. Pipe jaws look to be a black galvinazed steel.
-No V groves in face jaw.
-Casting exterior looks smooth.
-Anvil surface is ~2 7/8" x 4 7/8".
-Base ring is full 360 deg., with sets or teeth (you might be able to see them between ring and base top), and two screw downs.
-Hardly any play in jaws, at the edge of jaw it might have had 1/32" of play.
-Fully inclosed.
-Made in Taiwan.

Hope this helps for a future reference. I know this is not an American made vise, n I try to buy American made, but if your on a budget, n don't want to spend the kids college fund. This looks like a great vise for the money.

I will keep a eye out and repost if it shows up again.

Thanks for posting this, I was very interested in this vise, but didn't pull the trigger since it was such an unknown.

One thing that I really don't like about vises is when it takes a quarter to a full turn of the handle with no movement in the jaws to reverse directions. Does this one have much/any slop in the mechanism when reversing?

Thank you for posting the info & pix. The 'gear teeth' in the swivel are an indicator of a better grade Asian vise. If you ever put much sideways pressure/torque on something, you will be ecstatic to have them.

60k psi ductile iron is an indicator of a MUCH better grade Asian vise.

I've only had time to do a quick look, however the vise was very smooth, and hardly any slop or play. I had the vise extended past 5" out, tried to move the dynamic jaw, and at most it might have been 1/32" of slop or movement, in reference to alignment.

If your referring to the screw/crank mechanism, as in the thread pitch mesh. The vise I received is very good, no significant turning resistance (you can feel it is greased), and no slop.

Hope that answers your question.

Mine has very little windup when changing direction. There's a small amount of space between the lead screw and the collar on the dynamic jaw, and when you first crank the handle the screw moves in about 1/16 of an inch before the jaw begins to move.

Thanks for following up with this post. These 3 vises almost look like ductile iron versions of the Wilton mechanics vises. Maybe just coincidence that they carry the same basic model numbers- 744, 745, 746. It appears they may be made specifically for Grainger because I only found them available there and Grainger sites like Zoro and Drillspot. Also interesting that they aren't shown on the Palmgren website.
