Well, I'm finally going to make time and squeeze myself into my busy work schedule to tile my garage floor.

The tiles showed up today, I can't wait to get started. I hope to start sometime next week. I'll keep updating this thread with pics during the installation process.

I assume we don't have to worry about lippage on this install. Awesome!

The shoemaker's kids always go barefoot the longest. :)

Looking forward to the install -- and seeing it done right.

Lippage? Thinking of doing this type of floor as well. It sounds like a raised area at the entrance to the garage due to the tiles' height? If so, is there a way to avoid that? Thanks

No update? Did your installer flake out?

Not much going on yet, today I picked up the materials I needed. I'll be updating when I can.

I hope you are using some kind of membrane over that crack

The crack will be dealt with and waterproofed as well. Under laying problem where that crack is, there's a concrete wall underneath which is a dividing wall for my cold cellar. What's happening I'm getting water entering my cold cellar via that crack when washing my car(s) in the garage. Which is one of the reasons why I'm tiling the floor.

Small update, it's hard to get much done with work and a 4 month old baby at home.

Materials I ordered on Saturday.

Sunday, I spent a little time patching the horrible slope
View media item 33579
A pic of one of the fresh patches before being smoothed over with a trowel. BTW, I'm finishing one half first and then working on the other half later. I'm still parking my new car in the other side, plus all my tools and tiles are there as well.

I ended up patching almost 3/4 of the floor. The cracks were filled as well. Monday night after work I rolled on the first coat of Aqua Defense which is a liquid rubber quick drying waterproofing and crack-isolation membrane.
Hopefully tomorrow I'll get the second coat done, if needed.

If all goes well, I would like to start tiling this weekend.

I can't wait to see how this comes out!
I'm curious, though- hypothetically speaking, if the slab hadn't required all the prep work and leveling, would you still have used the Aqua Defense?

If there wasn't a cold cellar under the garage floor or cracks in the concrete, no I wouldn't have used the Aqua Defense.

Once the floor is completed, it'll be waterproof like a pool.

How much is that aqua 5 gal?

I see you are not cutting any corners.

Are you going to make base molding out of tile too?

How much water vapor pressure is the Aqua Defense rated for................is its intent the same as a
vapor moisture barrier with epoxy coatings, but intended only to be used under tile ???

Thanks

5 gal pail is around $300, it's not cheap but well worth it!!

As for tile baseboards, I'm kinda of undecided right now.

Aqua Defense is intended to be used under tiles where waterproofing is required, like shower walls, pans and swimming pools for example. It's not meant to be used as a vapor barrier for epoxy.

I can, but they keep feeding me **** that they have to order it. The one time he gave me a 5 gal it looked like it was from 1950 so I passed on it. But yea, when I need it, I can't get it in more than a 1 gal.

UPDATE....

After many different and elaborate pattern layouts, I ended up keeping the pattern fairly simple.

Started laying the tiles on Thursday night. Here's a pic after I was done for the night.

Spent a few hours on Saturday, this is where I ended up for the day.
View media item 33584
Today, I completed laying the tiles on that one side. Cleaned up a bit and moved the stuff over, so I can prep the other side.

So that's where I'm at so far. I'm ready to start the other side.

Wow, looks great, and you are moving fast. I like the layout. The fact that you didn't do the border around the perimeter is telling me you want to go up the wall? If so, I like it even more.

Looks awesome can't wait to see the final product. Was it mandatory to use porcelain? I'm in southern ontario as well, and was hoping to use ceramic. What is your professional opinion?

Porcelain has the colour running throughout so if it gets chipped it's far less noticeable.

I thought of doing a border but it will give the garage space the illusion of being smaller than it really is. Second, the long wall on the side that's not tiled yet is out of square by 2.5". A border would really emphasize the out of squareness. I'm still undecided about the baseboards, I want to finish the floor first and then figure out if I'll do the baseboards using the lighter tiles which will also act as a border.

Porcelain is not mandatory, but it would be preferred for our environment especially if you plan to park your daily driven snow covered vehicles in the garage during the winter months. True porcelain tiles generally have less than 0.5% water absorption. Plus they're more stronger and have a more durable finish, which can take more abuse. For me, I wanted to make sure my floor is pretty much bullet proof, because I do a fair bit of tinkering on cars and woodworking.

If you're looking at ceramic tiles based off of price, porcelain has come down in price and can be easily found for around $.80 sq.ft
Understand the key to a strong floor is all in the prepping and installation of the tiles (ceramic or porcelain) with no voids!!!

Sorry guys for the overdue update. I've been so busy to find the time to post up the process. The floor was completed on the weekend. Grouting will be done this coming weekend.

Now for the pics....

Patched the low spots in the floor and then applied the waterproofing membrane.

I got this done Thursday night after work. It was a long day, I was too tired to keep on going.

View media item 33582
This is where I ended up Friday night.

View media item 33583
On Saturday I was only able to get in about 5 hrs of work, but still got a good portion completed.

View media item 33585
Sunday all the tile work was completed!! I used a darker shade of tiles for the threshold in front of the garages doors, to separate the look from the main pattern.

Why do I see a tennis ball in mid air?

So that he doesn't drive too far into the garage. meant to hit his glass on the car.

Dakota, very nice. I like it a lot. What did you decide about border?

You can always cut the tile, and go half tile for the border, trimming to keep it level to the molding on top. I know this would add more work.

either way, looks great. Score another win for tile.

So the wife knows when to stop the car, otherwise she'll drive through the house.:D

Good job - looks really good! The more I see porcelain tile, the more I want it. I have 864 sq ft so the labor is scaring me. I've gutted my bathroom and tiled it with ceramic so I know how much work it is. The good part, there isn't as much cutting since my garage is rectangle. Just the corners. How many sq ft is yours? How many hours you go in it?
