One-Car Overhaul With A Side of New Shed

Hello fellow garage fans. I'm Ken from central Ohio and I'm starting this thread to share with you all, first my shed build, and then my garage overhaul. I've been on here for a while following builds and getting ideas and, more recently, I've become a member, albeit not a very active one but that's all due to change with this thread. More info about me can be read on my profile.

Basically, I have a one-car garage (24X11) that is built into the foundation of my cape cod/A-frame style home. It's full of **** and impossible to work in, let alone store a car in. I have no other place for storage and I'm fed up. I live in a community that won't allow a simple pole barn, as the proposed building is required to match my house (this=$$$$$$$ compared to a simple metal building). My solution: Until I can afford to build said matching detached garage, I will build a 16'x10' colonial style storage shed and completely redo my garage as a space solely for mechanic's tools and one of my classics. Nothing else.

How, you ask, did I come to the point of purchasing such a depressing garage in which to attempt to pursue one of my life's passions? If you read the words above, you probably noticed one that reads: wife. Initially, I baulked a the very idea of even looking at the house (which is quite nice architecturally and I style I prefer) because of the pathetic garage. As most of you may know, wives come with this thing called compromise. The compromise: We buy the house and the first major project that will be completed will be a detached garage. The reality: time, money, and a little thing called life. I've already completely gutted and renovated the walk-out basement in 2012 and have decided to forgo the garage once again to work on the main floor in 2014 (kitchen, bath, dining room, living room, bedrooms). The revised deal: shed gets built first, then existing garage overhaul and finally, the renovated garage will be for cars and the occasional house project only. No storage.

There are benefits.....were I a single man, I would be living in a loft over a pole barn in the middle of nowhere, spending every dime I had on cars and bikes. That may sound great to some, and it did to me when I was younger but lets face it, I would grow old and alone were I in that situation. Instead I have an amazing wife who supports my dreams and the most wonderful daughter with whom I hope to share my dreams. It just takes a little extra time but in the end I will be more satisfied than I ever thought possible. Here's to chasing the dream!

Thanks for checking in. I hope you enjoy and are inspired as much as I have been from the threads here.

Here's what I'm starting with!

A few more shots of my disaster.

Gotta love the cheap plastic garage door:

Is that my imagination, or is the center beam across the garage bowed ?

I see exactly what you mean. It's a bit of an optical illusion because the deck has a slight bow to it as does the garage door. The house is in excellent structural shape, it just needs quite a few cosmetics, namely the garage.

Wow, I think I saw your first picture in a nightmare! I wish you well with your project - it's always inspirational to see what some of the folks here have been able to do with small spaces. Keep us updated!

I'm interested in seeing what you do once the shed is up and the garage is empty. Small spaces can be challenging. My two car is barely a one car after all my tools and **** lined the walls. Shelving and storage on the walls seem to be the key to happiness at least for me.

Thanks guys for the encouraging words. I know I'm gonna' look to them when things get difficult and I need a little pick-me-up. And Dubber: Awesome garage! I recognized it the second I saw your post, as I've been to your thread a time or two.

That being said, here's the shed's build sight and roughly laid cement block foundation. Lumber will be delivered tomorrow.

Thank you sir. I'm going to be checking on this for sure, love the forced creativity that arises from owning an organized Single. I'm jealous of the extra few feet of space you have in your garage. Its amazing what an extra foot (side, and a few length) of space can enable you to do. Good luck!

Lumber has arrived, and with no drill this weekend due to the fed shutdown, I have two whole days with great weather to get started!

It looks like you have your work cut out for you. That new shed looks sweet. I could use a shed like that. Good luck.

Love your Jake avatar by the way. :rocker:

Thanks! I certainly have a ton of work ahead of me. I'm just focusing on the end result to keep me driven. BTW, I can't help but correlate your name, 348guy, with one of my favorite modern classics, the Ferrari 348. Am I off base?

You're spot on. When I joined this board I was seriously looking for a 89' 348 (didn't like the auto seat belts of the 90-94). I never found the right one. I still wish I would have owned one. I ended up moving into an 05' C6 in millennium yellow. I've owned it for almost 5 years now and it has been the most fun and trouble free car I've ever had.

Weather permitting, I should be able to have some pics of a standing structure up this evening!

Is this shed temporary?
Will you need to demolish it before building the final garage?

We'll see. My community has a two structure per lot rule. When I submit my plans for the garage, I won't mention the shed removal and see what happens. Plus, the By-laws are vague in that they aren't specific, so I may be okay since my shed is not on a permanent foundation. If I do have to take it down, I'll sell it. I'll either disassemble it by major section, or see if it can be transported as-is.

Today was rough! I got quite a bit done but far less than desired. It wasn't for lack of effort though, as I found myself fighting rain all day. I would get a few hours of work in, then it would rain. A couple more hours, then more rain. I was really hoping to have some walls up and possibly the trusses. I did get all the trusses completed, joists and subfloor down and two walls built. unfortunately, it's supposed to rain all day tomorrow and it's back to work on Monday, so it'll be interesting to see when I'll be able to get some more work done. Here's some pics of the floor:

Walls were finished after dark, so no pics of those yet. Stay Tuned!

Oh, for those that have been wondering, here's what'll eventually take the place of all that junk in my garage once the shed is complete:

I'm storing it at my dad's for the moment but it'll be nice to get it back to my place.

I better be careful here, she may read this thread.....Actually, is a combination of both of our things. You know, all the random stuff that has no place in the house.

I just couldn't do anything until the garage was cleared and that wasn't happening without first building a shed! Plus, since I only have a one-car, I'll have to use the shed to store some of my large and infrequently used items...I'll be tracking yours as well.

So, as I stated in my last update, the work-week has begun and between work, my family and the ever-setting sun, my time to work on the shed has been sparse. I did get a few hours in Tuesday night and was able to come very close to having all of the siding done. With the long weekend approaching, I have every intention of erecting the walls, setting the trusses and hopefully getting started on shingles.

Here's about where I left off on Tuesday:

10178002424_30740b0cf4_c.jpg

I did get another half wall of siding on after this shot was taken, so just half a wall to go.

I hope everyone had a great weekend. We had some beautiful weather this weekend here in Ohio, and an extra day for those of us who were off for Columbus Day, so I took advantage and got some major work done on the shed build. I spent time enjoying some free time with the family on Saturday and Sunday but, with the help of my wife, dad and dog (see pics), stood the shed up earlier today. Progress today was smooth and we really didn't have any surprises. It was like assembling a Lego set. I guess I have all of my OCD during pre-fab to thank for that. Here's what we completed today:

Back to work tomorrow, so things will slow down throughout the week but I plan on having the roof shingled by the end of this weekend. I'll keep ya'll posted!

welcome to the single club.

I have a slightly smaller garage and a slightly smaller shed. But you can make it work.

At least you have the space to build a bigger garage.

Love the vette too!!
