Hello fellow garage fans. I'm Ken from central Ohio and I'm starting this thread to share with you all, first my shed build, and then my garage overhaul. I've been on here for a while following builds and getting ideas and, more recently, I've become a member, albeit not a very active one but that's all due to change with this thread. More info about me can be read on my profile.
Basically, I have a one-car garage (24X11) that is built into the foundation of my cape cod/A-frame style home. It's full of **** and impossible to work in, let alone store a car in. I have no other place for storage and I'm fed up. I live in a community that won't allow a simple pole barn, as the proposed building is required to match my house (this=$$$$$$$ compared to a simple metal building). My solution: Until I can afford to build said matching detached garage, I will build a 16'x10' colonial style storage shed and completely redo my garage as a space solely for mechanic's tools and one of my classics. Nothing else.
How, you ask, did I come to the point of purchasing such a depressing garage in which to attempt to pursue one of my life's passions? If you read the words above, you probably noticed one that reads: wife. Initially, I baulked a the very idea of even looking at the house (which is quite nice architecturally and I style I prefer) because of the pathetic garage. As most of you may know, wives come with this thing called compromise. The compromise: We buy the house and the first major project that will be completed will be a detached garage. The reality: time, money, and a little thing called life. I've already completely gutted and renovated the walk-out basement in 2012 and have decided to forgo the garage once again to work on the main floor in 2014 (kitchen, bath, dining room, living room, bedrooms). The revised deal: shed gets built first, then existing garage overhaul and finally, the renovated garage will be for cars and the occasional house project only. No storage.
There are benefits.....were I a single man, I would be living in a loft over a pole barn in the middle of nowhere, spending every dime I had on cars and bikes. That may sound great to some, and it did to me when I was younger but lets face it, I would grow old and alone were I in that situation. Instead I have an amazing wife who supports my dreams and the most wonderful daughter with whom I hope to share my dreams. It just takes a little extra time but in the end I will be more satisfied than I ever thought possible. Here's to chasing the dream!
Thanks for checking in. I hope you enjoy and are inspired as much as I have been from the threads here.
