Hey guys,

Been lurking here for a few weeks and today we started getting the floor ready for epoxy so I decided I should get a thread going.

Just moved in to our new condo at the end of August. Here is the garage:

Aug_20th_2013.jpg

It is basically 10 feet wide and 40 feet long. It has a slope that runs down hill about 3 feet out of the man door and slopes down maybe 4 inches at the garage door. Water drains pretty well.

Here it is after lights, primer/sealer and some semigloss paint and getting the concrete ready.

The huge window doesnt open at all so I propped the door open and pulled out a window from the garage door and put a fan in it to move some air. Luckily it was pretty nice today (66 or so degrees) and Colorado is very dry so it is drying quickly. Should be ready for epoxy around 4 tomorrow

That's a great length. Unheard of around here. Lots of potential!! Single car garages are real gems. Anxious to see how you set it up.

Got the epoxy-coat floor laid down yesterday, turned out pretty well. Couple of things though
1. I should have bought a kit and a half my floor was pretty rough in some spots and it didnt turn out as thick or smooth as I wanted. It would have also given me enough to do the footings.
2. I got some air bubbles that I will have to fill or smooth and then patch or something.

Overall it turned out pretty good, I would give it a 9/10 as far as aesthetics go. 10/10 as far as how easy it went on.

I need to transfer over some pics and then I will get them posted up.

Wow, that's a great space. Nice work so far. What are your upcoming plans? Storage over the door? Soffit cabinets? Any additional painting, stripes, etc?

P.S. Your dog looks like he (she?) needs a sandwich! Ribs are showing, is he/she ok? Gotta take care of them pups, especially when they get a few years on them.

Really looking forward to watching this thread.

Thanks, still thinking about storage and what I want to do. I am thinking overhead bin storage above the door, along with some end bins next to the garage door facing back towards the man door. I wasnt going to do anything else to the paint but after looking through all these awesome garages on here I am thinking about a red and blue stripe or a victory red and silver (think Mclaren F1 team) just to break it up. I have a huge work bench at the shop I rent along with my tool boxes and stuff. I doubt I will bring them home as the shop is a 10 bay with lifts and air I rent for 400 bucks a month for another 6 months. But I do plan on building a small work bench and trying my hand at some cabinets. I have always wanted to learn some woodworking skills and the other half wants to build all sorts of stuff for the house so its a good excuse to buy tools. As far as the dog I can assure you she hasnt missed any meals in her long life! I think it is the shadows/striping of her coat. She is a 10 year old great dane weighing in at a measly 164 pounds! (per the vet 2 weeks ago)

More pics of the wife.

I will have to sneak some more of her hard at work. That was her mixing the epoxy-coat. She did a great job running the drill and the squeegee!

and Derrick your garage is amazing hopefully mine will turn out half as good as yours. Truly a work of art.

I love the homemade shows - thats brilliant

Thanks. I have helped coat 3 shop floors a long time ago and how I never thought of spiked shoes is beyond me they make life so much easier for floor coating its unbelievable. What you might not see is that I split the wood even though I pre- drilled all the holes so there is actually 5 spax brand screws and a thin layer of glue in the side of them holding on the outside inch! I ran one screw through the center of the heal and a little velcro to hold the toe down. If I had to do it over again I would have went with 12x1.5 inch screws instead of 12x1.25 to give me a little more room with the velcro.

Checked with her and here is our mugs from a triple D vacation in San Diego

Great job on the floor, boss -- and on your cleat design!

And I seriously doubt that anyone will notice the imperfections that only you two know about!

Been a little slow as I was working out of town for two weeks. I worked a little on Saturday night on the cove base, until i ran out of glue... And Today I got working on 2'x4' foot roll around work bench. Just need to finish the top and some screws in the brackets.

I am off most of the week so I hope to get a few things done and finished up.

I am taking a class at woodcraft next weekend I hope (woodworking 101) Looking to learn the basics the right way and start building some cool shelving/storage/cabinets and other stuff. I also am getting ready to dip into the Festool pool near the end of the month. I am getting a little bonus (around 3k) and want to buy some woodworking tools with it.

holy Christ! That would only really be convenient if you had a few project or garage queens. Shuffling that regularly would be a challenge.

I walked by and he was just hanging out in there, had a man cave all set up with a couch, big TV, pool table and some gym stuff. Still had his 2 cars in there too.

That would be perfect room to park and a work area for wood working or working the motorcycle

Ok guys here are some updated pics

Finished the cove base, built a rolling work bench, painted it and finished the top of it with boiled linseed. It turned out pretty nice. We also touched up along the footing where we didnt have enough epoxy-coat to cover it all. We brought home all those samples trying to match the color. We ended up taking our box fan into lowes and having them scan the color. It is almost an exact match.

Also there is a "before" picture of right inside the garage man door that we cut out to build some inserts for shoes since our landing is so small at the bottom of the stairs and with 2 doors that swing in there is no place to leave everyday shoes.

Also a before picture of the right " bottom" corner of the garage where hopefully tomorrow night there will be some built in shelves for some tubs and the recycling tote.

Also I went out and bought some tools today and will hopefully get them setup tonight to start doing some more accurate cutting and building.

not to much to update we have been working out of town again but I did finish the entry way shoe storage and this morning I home depot deliver some sheet goods so I can start on a shelf unit and some cabinets. I dont have a a truck and access to one is a 40 minute drive each way. So for 19.99 I figure its a decent deal to have a few sheets of ply, hardwood, insulation and some 2x4's delivered. I also thought about just buying a cheap little truck but thats a of 19.99 deliveries I could have gotten.

Oh I almost forgot I did take down the electrical box and put a coat of satin black on it. I think it looks really sharp. Thinking about adding a red stripe to it.

I also picked up some cabinet doors from Buds second hand warehouse for a couple bucks each and I think I will be using them in the garage for now until I can find something else to use them on. They look really classy and the price was right so I bought them with no project in mind!

The local lowes was getting rid of the demo cabinets on the floor so I picked up a corner unit for 300 bucks. My dad bought 3 other units and we are storing them in our shop for now. He was after 2 of the cabinets so not sure what we are going to do with the rest.

this is just the corner and to the right there is a left that is going on another wall i'll get some pics of that too. Cabinet will be hung on the wall, we are just making sure everything fits.

So how is it coming along?

SLOW!!!

Here are a few pictures of it as it sits today. We are going through some issues we found with the condo and I am thinking all the baseboard trim and carpet need to come out of the condo as well as all drywall on outside corners at least 8 inches up. If we do the tear out the carpet we will replace with a dark wood floor.

Previous owners must have had a male dog that liked to pee on the walls and all they did was cover it with Kilz primer. I found it when I was doing a few little (time consuming) touch ups and I started to scrape the mud off of a corner to redo it and make it smoother, it was a real eye sore and once I broke through the paint it was an overwhelming smell of pet urine.

I decided I have 2 sheets of 3/4 ply and 2 sheets of 1/2 and I am going to make some french cleat strips to hang every thing on you see on the floor and the black shelves. Probably make some shelves for all those systainers too. The furniture dollys are not a very good sysbase.

Our new family member Chewy

The helper, all geared up. You can also see my gift the floor.

All the rest of the photos just show the mess, I did trim out my work bench practicing miter cuts and built a fold down shelf to hold spray cans. Lesson learned is sand then assemble.

Thought I would do a little update.

I was checking out another thread about lighting since I am not happy with mine at all and I saw some LED's that he was using so I grabbed one off of amazon. I like it a lot, its plenty bright but it is a little to much I think for my low ceilings, maybe less wattage and more of them would be better? So i ordered a 10w and a 20w tonight and will update again when I try those out.

This is a pic I snapped over the weekend after I cleaned up a little, it is of daylight.

This is from under the LED with it off

Same location only the LED is on

ANd here is where it is mounted. For a plug I used a PC power supply cord. Once I figure out which one I want to use I will wire it permanently.

Cute pup... I am seriously thinking of getting a dog myself, but I'd probably strangle him if he pooped inside my garage, lol (house ok),...jkjkjk before the animal advocates come out

What kind of LED light is that? That's bright. I have 2 4' double T5's to install in my single but haven't had a chance..

I like the idea of painting the electrical box.. I had not thought of that for my single. Did you just spray it satin or did you do any prep work on it? I am going to have to remove it anyway in the coming weeks to run some electrical down the wall.

Here is the thread where I learned about the LED
http://www.garagejournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=269983&page=2

As far as painting the cover I stole the idea from either Dubber or the single car in Indy.
I sanded it lightly to scuff the surface then used krylon satin. I find the key with spray paint is to warm the can up before hand. I put mine in a hot pot of water. (not on the stove just the hot water from the tap)

In January I got around to hanging some insulation on the garage door. Really seems to help. I also did the large window with a 2 inch thick piece but the window is 106 and the sheet is only 96 so it doesnt fit that great. Hard to justify the cost of an entire sheet for only a little bit.

here is the door before and after.

Wow do I feel guilty! I have neglected my garage and almost everything in it since early June. Last thing I made was a "fruit" crate and that was over memorial day weekend. After that it has been motorcycle riding every weekend. Over labor day weekend after a short 300 mile ride I decided to clean up the garage and start getting it ready to be able to use for fall. I figure we will have 3 more weeks of mountain riding before the leaves all fall and the passes start getting snow.

Here is what has been a huge distraction this summer!
IMG_20150711_075000381 by Josh Hammett, on Flickr

On the to do list is
1. Air Compressor
2. Reel
3. More Outlets
4. Heat for the winter
5. Sakurama MFT table winch
6. Better lighting (thinking LED tube lights)
7. Better layout for work table/bench
8. A place to have my tool boxes

Nothing in a particular order other than the compressor is on the way and reel and I want heat before end of October.

Manny,

worth more than the very few bucks I spent on it. In the summer you dont feel the heat beating through the door and in the winter the door is warm (as warm as the garage) to the touch. The other thing I did was used a 4x8 sheet of insulation and stuck it in my huge window and that has helped a huge amount. I keep thinking I am going to get a letter from the HOA but its been 6 months and I have not moved it yet. Its the same thing only around 2 inches thick and the shiny side is facing out. I will get a pic when I get home tonight.

So I was moving some lumber around in the garage and caught one of my lights with it and it came crashing down and blew up the 2 bulbs and pretty well mangled itself. I have been looking at some LED lighting since I started this but pricing has always held me back. Looks like they have come down a lot in 2 years though and Sams Club had these.

http://www.samsclub.com/sams/4ft-led-shoplight-shoplight-led/prod16460030.ip?navAction=

Did some research and figured they would work. Here is what I had
http://www.lowes.com/pd_420866-4392...t=utilitech+fluorescent+shop+light+common#img
along with some GE daylight bulbs (2600 Lumens, 6500K)

The LED's are super bright, on the lux app I am seeing 206-240 at waist height directly under the fluorescent lights and the LED's I am seeing 775-810 they keep getting brighter the longer they are on. I am going to change the layout too, they were right down the middle. I bought 8 of the LED's and am goiing to go 2 across 4 deep for 8 total.

Also had an electrician buddy come out and price out running new wiring for a 220 radiant heater and more plugs on the ceiling and walls. Right now I have 1 plug at the far end and one where the garage door opening is plugged into that I put a surge protector on to get a few more plugs.

here is a pic of the one light I "direct" mounted to the ceiling by modifying the chain mount. The chain mount has an ear to hang the chain from but it also has 3 counter sunk holes that looks like it is made for ceiling mounting. I cut the chain ear off and screwed the mount to the ceiling and snapped the light in. Seems like it will work great.
