Generally speaking, on stuff made in the last 30 or less years with the round lock. Kennedy, Waterloo re-branded, stuff like that...

Can anyone give a general price range on what you pay for a new lock/key set??

No specific box I'm asking about, just the kind of craftsman, Kennedy, etc stuff we all see on craig's from time to time with the lock punched out.

thanks

On average for a new key and lock <$20. Key only <$10. Waterloo/craftsman keys are $3+ ship (IIRC is ~$2 or 3). Older snap on keys from LVDC or something are ~$7 or $8. Depends an what all you need aka what all is missing. Some lock mechanisms are kinda goofy and hard to find, but the tumblers and keys are pretty easy to source.

Standard cabinet locks start around $5. At the low end of the scale you don't "get what you pay for", instead you are just rolling the dice. Some are quite good, and some should sell for $1.

Here is an assortment of what are known as "Cam Locks". Prices vary from $1-2 up. Most are the same mounting style, but they come in various reaches.

You just have to figure out what you need. Don't be fooled by the really expensive ones, they can be drilled or turned just as easily as the cheaper ones. If security is an issue, you can install one of those slip rings to deter pipe wrenching. They also dress up a lock a bit if that's what you're looking for.

Do a "Cam Lock" search to find what you want.

I saw a "universal lockset" with one lock and two keys at Sears last weekend for $15, but I'm sure you can get it for less online.
