Been considering a Knipex pliers wrench then I came across the pliers wrench Ty-Rap removal version (86-05-150-S02). The difference between the original version and the Ty-Rap removal version seems to be laser etched serrations on the jaws. A photo is attached.

Anyone have one? How do you remove Ty-Raps with the jaw serrations? Are the jaw serrations deep enough to possibly cause damage to a work surface?

Huh...pliers specifically designed for cable tie removal? Really? I have a set of the pliers wrench and they're awesome but not sure I get the purpose of these. Must be some very specific need.

Those look neat, but one of the key things I like about my pliers wrenches is the fact that they have smooth jaws... all other 50+ pliers I own have serrated jaws. I use the smooth jaws all the time when I don't want to mar something.

Yup, kind of the point of that great tool - smooth jaws like a wrench.
But someone somewhere must need purpose built ty-rap remover pliers wrench I guess...

If you want a very powerful gripping parallel jaw adjustable plier, buy the smooth jaw version. Great tool

That is no way to remove a wire tie or cable tie (ty-rap® is a registered trademark of Thomas and Betts) If it were wrapped around a wire bundle, it could easily damage the wires during the removal process.

If you need to remove cable ties, use THIS TOOL.

I have these and they actually work pretty good. I like them better than side cutters since it doesn't throw the spent Ty wraps everywhere. They also work as regular pliers wrenches which is a plus.

I generally just use regular diagonal cutters and cut into the latter square part of the zip tie. They come right off and nothing damaged

So, can't we just grab and twist the clasp with any old pliers?

I would suppose you could. The Knipex may be easier to use though because of the design. In all honesty I bought them because they were cheaper than the non Ty wrap version. They work good, but I would be lying if I said I search for them in my tool box if I need to cut zip ties. They do work, but it's a nice bonus to actually being pliers wrenches. I would not pay retail or even close just to have the Ty wrap functionality.

One more thing, those videos are great, before I bought them it was a real pain trying to figure out what the difference was and how they even worked. Once I figured it out, I thought "this can't be the way, there must be a secret, why else would they sell it as special?" but yeah that was the way.

Wow! I just checked these on amazon, $80! I paid $27 for mine last year...

Thanks Charles, I need that. I'm always afraid of using standard cutters to cut ties. With that tool, I can sort of pull the tie away when cutting to ensure I'm just cutting the tie.

An avionics mechanic at work has them, he says they are the "cats meow" for cutting ty-raps and he cuts LOTS of them.

Those are cool. I'm starting to suspect that Knipex has a specialty plier for every possible application. Last week I bought what I thought was a pair of Knipex end nippers at a church rummage sale. It wasn't until I got them home that I saw the tiny "Oetiker" on them. They're not nippers, they are for installing band clamps. Nuts!

Ironically, I found they do a great job of cutting wire ties. :lol_hitti

Now this seems like a great tool, no stress on the cable bundle, just ordered the 1300 model
