They didn't even have the sense to photoshop those spot welds out of the picture.

Well, I went for it! We'll see if I keep it or if they fulfill the order. My plan is to store consumables in it (ie light weight). I need a place for my chisels, files, screwdriver bits, utility knives, router bits, reciprocating saw blades, jig saw blades, precision tools, multimeters and electronics, ect. I think this will fit the bill and allow me to keep the stuff locked up! If I don't like it right out of the box...back it goes.

I have two of these, and one of the top boxes. Very good quality for the price.

Best to roll under a tall workbench if you can. The tops are not sturdy enough nor are the sides for any type of hammering if you use these as a worktop base. As toolboxes, they are great.

These state they are a "new item." How long have you had them? I've never seen them till the OP posted the link. I'd love additional feedback, b/c even if they're not the highest quality, they could definitely serve a purpose for me.

Just stumbled out the garage to take a peek. Looks exactly like mine that are marked "Griplatch" on the left top. Paid quite a bit more than $120 for them, but got them around Christmas on sale a few years back. The Griplatch ones are listed at 70# per drawer in comparison to the OP's model at 50# per drawer. Seems like a great deal if you don't need the fancy locking drawers. The Griplatch one is about 15% heavier by product weight and roughly the same dimensions.

Wow...just noticed the weight difference as well. That's quite a significant difference in weight when the boxes are the same dimensions...although the box you have does have more drawers.

One thing I did notice on the top box I linked to, is that the side handles are eerily similar to their "standard duty" handles on the top boxes...the cheesy rubber inserts, yet both the top and bottom box have been labeled as "heavy duty" I think the item weight rating kind of tells the story.

Thanks for looking into that for me.

These boxes do have an excellent price and they are a good value. However, they do represent the boxes craftsman has been putting out the last couple years where they made drawers entirely too thin for everything but really light storage. The drawer "weight rating" has to do with ball bearing slides capacity. A better comparison is the item weight.

Here is the box I own: Sears Item# 00912737000

The item weight on mine is 152 lbs., where the weight in the one on sale is 124.5 lbs. I bet money the cabinets are the same and the drawers are where the 27 lbs. of steel are missing.

Still, it is a fantastic price. Despite it's shortcomings for use as a tool box, it offers a good amount of lockable storage.

not a bad box for the price, but I thing you would be happier with a full 18" depth top box.

Agreed. I bought a box with 12" top and middle, and returned it. A 16" or 18" gives a lot more cubic volume and holds a lot more tools.

This is funny, but I was just looking at that box you linked to on the Craftsman website and noticed the same thing. That's a significant difference in weight for what "appears" to be the same box.

Yep, and this is my dilemma. I like the price of the 12" box, but want the space of the 18". As it sits now, the set will be $200. If I buy a better top box, the price creeps much closer to the HF 26" which is likely a better box overall than the Craftsman. Additionally, I could get a Performax Box from Menards for significantly more money than the CMan box, but again, better box.

I got my top box today. I haven't opened it up yet but I will soon enough.

Let us know what's up with it quality-wise. Obviously it's not going to be super great, but for the price, I'm highly considering some bottom boxes for a project I'm working on.

Oh...and pictures are always great!!

For 70, not including my 17$ gift card and 1.50$ in points, it was hard to pass up!

Thanks for posting the photos Chad. Is the trim on the drawer handles plastic or metal?

How are these any different than the ball bearing tool boxes they've sold for years?

This may be a new drawer configuration, but it looks like the same boxes they've been selling for a long time.

This may be very true. But at this price point, it puts into reach some projects I've been holding off on. I don't think there's anything specifically "new" or innovative or a step in the right direction with them...just the pricing.

And this why I bought it, for light duty storage. It's not going to replace my HF 44, or even stop me from getting the top box for it, but it will allow me to store my array of consumables. And for less than $200 (top and bottom), how can you go wrong?

Who knows?
I've had this same top box since Black Friday of 2008. It's served me well and I have no complaints about it. I got mine for $79 as a clearance item.

Are the side carrying handles those terrible rubberized plastic inserts, or are those metal as well??

I'm not sure what to think about these Craftsman Boxes. In my opinion they are very nice looking boxes from three feet away. The finish is nice, welds look ok, sheet metal bends are crisp. The quality control is good.

Now, on the other hand, they are a lightweight box. Thin sheet metal, so so drawer slides. Overall a little flimsy. I don't make a living with my tools so it would last for 30 years no problem.

I've got the 40" Heavy Duty Premium combo on lay-away to the hold 50% off price. I'm thinking I won't go through with it and may very well settle for a Menard's box.

I'm going to the local NAPA auto store tonight to look at a Homak. Northern tool has what looks like a nice combo 41" box that will be $599.00 on BF.

I checked out the 44" at HF, and it is a very solid box. I'm a little too into aesthetics and don't want a red box so it won't work for me. But damn, you can't beat the price for what you get.

I think we're in similar boats, or at least we're looking at similar items.

The HF as a box, aesthetics not withstanding is the best value of the bunch. However, I hate red toolboxes. That being said, I own one because I bought it for tool storage, not a fashion show. And then...I plan on painting the box grey and leaving the drawers red. (think retro Craftsman). I can live with that, and actually think it will look pretty cool.

The Menards boxes are a good second choice though and allow you to get some different color options, like black ;), blue, menards green, or red. Me, I'd get black.

Which brings me back to the Craftsman boxes I just bought for $200. They're on the lightweight side, smaller and the top is not full depth? Why on earth did I buy them? Odd storage of things like table saw blades, screwdriver bits, files, chisels, temp sensor, moisture meter, volt meter, router bits, ect. All that stuff has to go somewhere, right? I think if you're planning on loading it down with the 299 pc socket set, you might be in trouble, but if you're storing things like utility knives and pencils, you'll be in great shape for the money.

My dilemma is do I really want a box that can only store certain items. Would I be better off with the HF 26" for an extra $130? Or would I be better off getting another 44', though it doesn't suit those needs very well.
