I am located in North Eastern Ontario Canada and am starting my new build. I am going 30ft deep and 36ft wide with two 12ft doors. I want to try and do whatever I can myself to try and control costs on the project but definitely will leave the pro's to do what is out of my comfort zone.

Here is the site location:

Can you believe up here they now require the footings to be 72 inches below final grade?

Was able to borrow a mini excavator from work and dig for my electrical and water line from the house:

It was NOT easy but with the help of my electrician, plumber and son in law, we were able to feed both into the tile that went directly to the utility room so no holes in the foundation, everything is fed underneath...

I must admit they had to convince me on this as I would have given up and made a hole to run it all in... Thanks guys!!

Foundation time:

Here is the part where Mother Nature started challenging us, just before we poured the walls, rain, rain and more rain...

We had numerous cave ins that would knock the forms out of place, dig here, dig there, straighten the forms then boom another side caves in... No fun at all...

Finally, the rain stopped and it got colder so we got ahead of it and on the Friday night, we were ready...

Poured the Walls on the Saturday morning then they showed up on the Sunday morning to strip the forms.

We were then able to back fill the foundation and get ready for the floor. This time the trusses get held up, too cold and wet to pour the floor and expect a good result. Started on the walls and now to decide, do we risk tarping the top to heat and pour or do we wait for trusses??? I am not the most patient person in the world but let's see where this takes us...

The ground is covered with snow since I took these last photos. Yes today is November 11th, 2013 and the ground is white... this IS the North...

I've gotta say, for the amount of time a weekend affords, you've certainly made incredible headway. I don't think you'll have to be too worried about being impatient on stuff if you keep that kind of pace up haha.

Nice progress, and lovely countryside (looks kinda like the valley area)

Wow, deep footings! The weather makes you guys are a little tougher up there. I guess your foundations are tougher too. How much concrete was poured? Sorry if you mentioned it, already.

I have decided to wait for trusses before continuing... too cold and weather unpredictable up here. It seems like if you don't like the weather, just wait 15 minutes and it changes. Once trusses are here, (approx November 22nd) we can close up, heat and be CERTAIN to have a nice floor. I could push it but may be stuck with a crappy floor for years to come...

Stay tuned... :canada:

update:
Trusses are finally here and contractor will be on it Monday morning. Presently snowing and blowing. There is about 2 inches of frost already inside the garage that we will need to thaw before pouring the floor after we close everything in. The cold weather came quick this year...

I'd hold off pouring the floor until next spring at this stage. Not what you want to hear, but bettere that the pour goes right then cold weather sabotage the finished product.

Can you dry in and insulate before you turn on the heat? Contractor friend of mine in Illinois would frequently do that. He was a spec builder and usually put in a couple of foundations every fall to have something to build on during the winter.

I hear you on Mother Nature--there is an old saying--"if you want to make God laugh, tell him your plans".

One other quick thing, I love Canada and I was born in Ontario but could y'all keep that Arctic air up there--we are freezing our Texan butts off!

I want to start by thanking Mother Nature for co operating today. By 10 am all trusses were up.
5yhy7u5a.jpg

By noon all was braced and end ladders were on and facer boards in place.
eneru3u9.jpg

End of day fully sheeted, drip edges on, tar paper and starter three tab shingles in place.

Tomorrow shingle!

Looks like she is pulling back on her co operation and forecast is -8c high winds will make it feel like -17c.

Somehow, we will get it done...

Mother Nature was NOT so helpful today but although it snowed and was quit windy, the shingles are on.

We also started inside with the Moore Vents and the electrician also started.

I am located approximately 100 miles north of North Bay to answer your question....

This morning was -17c but a lot got done. The Moore vents and hurricane ties got completed. The electrical is pretty much ran, vapour barrier is on ceiling and strapping is up.

7azebeva.jpg

The waferboard on the ceiling is almost complete and I got a head start on wall R22 insulation tonight.

All in all, a GOOD day...

Hang in there man! -20 here early morning, the cat refused to go out..
I feel for you, I got my roof on, on a Nov. 24 at least you can put up some plastic and get a little heat to stay in while you insulate.

Another " fresh" day up north. -21 c this morning. We are now fully insulated, vapor barrier is up and double insulated tarps to block the doors. Heat is on as of 5pm.

It is now above the freeze point inside but being I am not the most patient person, a bigger heater will be here tomorrow LOL.

Windows should be here and installed Monday if all goes as planned. Hope to start on siding also...

Here are today's photos:
