OK heres my imitation of a garage. 4 Mexicans, four days, for four thousand dollars. It should of taken them about 4 hours, but do to 40 mph wind they had to do a little bit everyday for 4 days. Its 30'X31'. I plan on building a half wall in the back to keep some of the weather out. I also need to put some 4x4 post with cement to keep the wind from blowing it to Nebraska.

Looks as tho it will make a nice sail as is! I've heard that when you close up three sides there really hard to keep on site.

Re: 4,by four,for four

How's it attached to the ground?

well believe it or not, they use huge nails (looks like) but they are about 2'ft long.
I know Kansas wind and I need more tie down than that. The company charges $75.00 for the cork screw, trailer house type tie down. I bought some rebar 1/2" by 4', I plan on drilling a hole in the bottom metal and pound it in the ground and bend the top 6 - 8" over. I took a small carport down last year and that's what they used, it took me and 2 other guys, Kubota tractor and 8' pry bar almost half a day to get the rebar pulled up out of the ground.
I also plan on closing off the back wall (half, 15'ft.) by using 4" X 4" treated post and cement it in the ground about 2' to 3'. I will space them 4' apart. If this doesn't hold it down, I don't know what will.

Wow... please give me more pics of your VW's!!!!!
OK to start the purple bug is a "fat chick" 74, that belonged to a dear friend of mine that died about 6 months ago, son needed money.
The Jersey hippy bus is a 64 shagging wagon, I just sold it a couple of weeks ago and it now resides in Rolla, Mo.
The 63, is a 15 window that is my new baby, the money from the 64 will help me to start buying parts for it. The PO had cut the rear trans axle to use for a 3 wheeler trike. That's probably the only reason it was still around, and sold at auction. The PO had died and they sold everything, this bus wasn't even on the sale bill and the very last thing sold. This went in my favor as far as price went.
The last picture is it before the new owner came and got it.

I see by your avatar you have a couple, and probably more. Most people that have VW's usually have a couple around in different stages. What else do you have?

Kelmark GT in you avatar? Always though those looked neat.

The Kelmark has a neat story how the two guys started the company. A story like many of the other unusual car companies that got started and no longer around.

Forget driving those with a sledge. Get a fence post driver. If you have access to an air compressor maybe you could use a long barrel impact hammer with some kind of cup driver. A CP717 would be perfect !

I also plan on closing off the back wall (half, 15'ft.) by using 4" X 4" treated post and cement it in the ground about 2' to 3'. I will space them 4' apart. If this doesn't hold it down, I don't know what will.
Are you better off leaving a small gap along the bottom for the wind to blow through, or building a small earthen berm along the outside ?

Re: 4,by four,for four

I think I might go ahead and have a concrete floor poured. I get a lot of wind out here and I sure would hate to see this carport end up in Nebraska!
I can get a 30 X 31 X 5" floor for $4500.00, about the same cost as the car port. Still not sure or just put more gravel down. I need to build another 40 X 60, to have room for all my projects. OR I need to sell my projects and save money all the way around:willy_nil

OK, just keep doing things backwards. I decided to go ahead with the concrete floor. So I took the back wall off and removed the bottom sheet on both sides. We had to raise one side to put the form under it. And as Murphy goes, the wind started blowing like no tomorrow. We straped the one side down to fence post, hope this works. Here is a few pictures of whats going on.
First had to move a couple of vehicles.

Re: 4,by four,for four

Went out to check the progress. The wind was blowing so hard, I was getting sand blasted from the new sand on the floor. You could see small tornado's or dirt devils as we call them around here!
OK the trough is for where my post lift will go, should have plenty of thickness there.
The time has come for the pouring of the mud! Its a simple idea of dumping wet, heavy material on the ground, then working it around. I have respect for the concrete workers, that's some hard manual labor there, and worth what you pay.

Re: 4,by four,for four

I had the bright idea that as long as they were putting up forms, I might as well add another 10'. Now this is something that I thought long and hard about, I should of had all this building done at one time cause its costing more the way I went about it.
Does anyone know what the name of the metal they use on the frame of these carports? Its like a galvanized aluminum or metal, but I'm trying to find a place to buy some extra without going thru the carport company?

well finally got the building mounted to the slab. Now the fun begins of getting it wired and some walls put up. I'll have some new space for my signs and tags:rocker: Have you seen very many backward RR signs?

Another air cooled fan admiring your project and toys. I love your wife's bug

I was thing the same that you were building in the wrong order. Might have been easier to move the carport over 50' and then get your slab in.

The metal for the siding is probably galvalum. It is used ,softly for siding, roofing, fascias, drip edges and gutters

Re: 4,by four,for four

Well this didn't go as planned:mad: It could of been worse, but the bottom 2 sections of the door will need to be replaced. This was one of my more stupider ways to unload a car from a trailer. The wife said she would help but wouldn't be home for a couple of hours, sooo I figured I'll just roll it off the back and the 2 tires behind it would stop it, but noooo:dunno: so I aired up the tires that hold air about 5 minutes, unhooked the wench, and put it in neutral and give a little push. Well as soon as I shifted to neutral, it was like it became possed and went rolling backwards, I was pumping the brakes, nothing, ride over in about 8 seconds. Just like ridding a bull. Well when it was all over, I got out and just knew it hit the car inside the barn. Got lucky not a lot of damage, the car doesn't have a scratch but the garage door won't buff out.:eyecrazy:

It was like everything was in slow motion, don't even remember it making any crashing sound. Lucky they make this door about 40 miles from me, so I can go to the factory and buy 2 pannels;) At least no one was hurt or got ran over. I guess its a law of averages, I've hauled about 100 cars on this trailer and all with no problems. Glad the wife wasn't there, but if she would of been there I would of done this different, and this wouldn't happened.

Ouch! Every new ride has a way of staking its claim and marking its territory. Usually it is with oil or other fluids. But it looks like this sweet ride is saying it really wants to stay!

BTW, it's a little late, but 2x4 chocks might have stopped it!

Yeah you would think 2 big tires under the rear wheels would of stopped the beast, but nooo...
Hey wingnut, hows the bus doing? I sold the 71 camper I had to a person in around Dallas. She seemed to be pleased and already named it Gus. I'm glad to see it go to a good home. I was planning on using some of the money on the 15 window, but I bought a 65 bug. Its all there but the motor was left open to the elements. I don't have any plans on rebuilding it, but might use it to trade for work on another car.
I went and started buying material for the wiring and putting up walls on this building. I'm wondering if anyone out there has tried to insulate a building like this carport? The frame walls are spaced at 5' foot intravials, this makes it hard for a 4'foot materials. I found some metal studs that are 2 1/2" wide, I plan on adding them in between at every 4'. This way I can put osb plywood and run the electric boxes to.

Well next Tuesday the carport company is coming out to finish adding another 10 feet plus 2 garage doors. This project is becoming something than what I had originally planned.
I'll get some pictures of the new section.

Re: 4,by four,for four

Well they came out to do the final build. I was telling the crew chief about how much the wind was causing it to move around. He says the last crew didn't do the back wall correct. They took the wall studs down and then took the 30' piece they were attached to down, then they put new studs attached to the rear roof truss, then spaced the studs about 4' instead of 5'. When they did this the metal on the back wall now has screw holes at 5' length and the studs are 4'. So they had to use some of the material from the new add on part. Well they ran short and have to come back Wednesday. The doors are going to be the roll up kind. I have never had a garage with this style of door, but they look like they will work really well.

Re: 4,by four,for four

Nice progress on the build. It is always disheartening to have an expert say that the previous experts did something wrong, but a comfort to see that they want to correct it instead of you having to get team 1 back to fix it.

Roll-up doors are the norm around here. The work well and have no door swing clearances to worry about. A little planning and there is plenty of storage available above the doors as well. And an automatic door opener is a must-have before you will be completely convinced.

BTW, progress on my bus is moving forward. Front brakes are ready to go back on, but I have decided to replace the swiss cheese front floorboard, inner valance and a-pillars before installing the brakes. My next step is to learn to weld on scrap metal and then on the steering and pedal bottom cover plate before I do anything structural or visible.
