Any Ideas for Portable Tool Box Cart?

I try to do most of my farm equipment maintenance and tractor restoration in a shop environment, but often it’s necessary to do work in a remote machine shed, in a hay field, or “under a shade tree”. To support this work, I have a fairly well stocked portable tool box that I lug around from job to job.

As you can see in the pics, it’s a simple box with a lift-out tray that’s overflowing with the most used tools. I’m planning on upgrading this box to a slightly larger setup with, perhaps, multiple drawers to make it easier to find the specific tool I need without pawing through so much stuff and knocking half of it on the ground.

But my actual question here isn’t about the box itself. This box weighs a ton and it’s quite a chore to lug it any distance (or even pick it up off the ground). So, I’m wondering if anyone has built/made/modified some sort of two-wheel cart to move a heavier tool box around? It would have to be a “permanent” design, have decent sized pneumatic tires for rolling over rough ground, keep the box a foot or so off the ground so the box won’t sit in the mud/snow/****, and allow the top lid to hinge open without being obstructed by the cart handles. The cart could also serve to carry an extension cord/drop light, maybe a few cans of WD40 or never-seize, small box of rags, grease gun and maybe a small trash container.

Gee, sounds like a service cart!! But, a typical service cart is probably bigger than I want, isn’t a two-wheel design, and won’t travel over rough ground.

Any ideas or suggestions or pics of something like this you’ve seen or made??

I keep my road chest on a roller frame in the shop. The cart has five inch casters and was made for a countertop shop to move granite slabs on. It's not finished but works great for moving around the shop. I'm contemplating some pneumatic casters for it this winter so it can move around the yard in the spring.

This is designed specifically around the Festool MFT (multi-function Table) and their Systainers but could be easily modified for whatever containers you have.

There's also a youtube video of it in action:

I really like the table design and portability but, for me, just the ability to automatically square cuts and carcases is worth the effort to build one!

As always, no affiliation or anything - just impressed with the guy and his design.

Unless one is on the non-union side of the millwright world where everyone just *has* to have a 4 ft gang box regardless of what is in it, most union construction millwrights I've worked with in power houses or paper mills put their tool boxes on a metal framed hand truck. It seems to work fairly well.

a harbor freight or craftsman "side box" welded to the above pictured dollley would hole more tools than you could carry and probably do a decent job going through dirt, which im sure you will run across.

That is a really good idea. As long as the tools are in some kind of holders to minimize rattling and rolling when it's tipped back for transport. I might just pirate that idea for a future project.

:+1: On the wagon. you could get one of those landscapers wagons. You could get a bigger box and have room for parts/chemicals.

When I was in school many years ago, I used and old 6 drawer Metal Box Company top chest on a mover's dolley. Worked great in the shop, probably not off road capable though.

Whitside makes this http://www.whitesidemfg.com/toolstorage.html

Woot had German made versions on sale for $80 awhile back. You could drag that almost anywhere. The only downside is that if you overload the box, You'll probably throw your back out when you try to raise it.

My first thought was starting another tool box instead of one large one, if carrying or carting. ..my second was a wagon, like sold at Northern etc. (most China made) even though you said 2 wheels. There are all kinds of tool wagons out there. Then you mentioned snow-
This Convertible wagon/sled sold as a toy but the idea might plausible.

Im unsure how if 'permananet' how youd get in & out of truck if the single box is already gettin heavy? Wagon you could load, if all metal you could add brackets & holders for whatever you might need. Though they weigh 50#+.

Edit seems others led to same conclusion. :+1: Wagon.
Kinda fun 'till I stumbled on my new brake stool...

Does anyone remember the box that has the table/riser built into it and you can roll it around on two wheel IIRC in the collapsed position.

I really like the idea of the HF side chest mounted on a sturdy two-wheel dolly! It's narrow for easy door passage, holds lots of tools, parts and miscellaneous stuff, has latching drawers and a flat top to layout tools etc.

But, it is bigger than I really need and the overall weight may be a problem .... does anyone know how much this side cabinet weighs empty??

In the junkyard I've been using a 1970's Radio Flyer wagon that I made a 1" steel tube subframe for. It has 10" Harbor Freight tire/wheel combinations. Easily hauls a tool box that is a little bigger than the OP's along with a couple ammo cans. Provisions could be easily added to carry more.

It rolls over rough terrain easily. All my tools and parts are up out of the weeds and mud.

So this is a bit bigger than you are thinking, but I have been working in the shop with my road chest sitting on a harbor freight lift table. Works pretty good, makes it possible to load the box into my truck, it is awful heavy two people can't even lift it. Rolls around pretty good and then I lift it to a convenient height to work out of. The cart, while not light, isn't too heavy where I can't load it into my truck myself. https://drive.google.com/file/d/0B6plhvU-o6M8dDFWVU1XaDFCUml4X3FIUGltamNQVkxDYXU0/edit?usp=sharing

That is one of the coolest ideas I've seen in a long time.

I picked up an old Matco side cab yesterday to do this very thing. Got the idea from this thread. The cab I found only has three drawers, two shelves, and is painted black but I think it'll work well. $75 btw for the cab
