Back Again Sears 42 Pc Craftsman 1/4 and 3/8 inch Drive Bit and Torx Bit Socket Wrench Set $29.99. Link

TheToolReviewGuy

was gonna say free store pick but why say it anymore? It should be free, your the one who's driving there using your gas, right :dunno: Sears has to stop putting the word FREE under the store pick up, it's getting old.:lol_hitti

Anyway they will most likely be made in China, almost all of them are, I was lucky to get the last set made in the USA at the second store I went to on Thanksgiving night. Still managed to snap off a 5mm hex socket, go figure. Should have read the fine print, NOT RATED FOR IMPACT, didn't think a Milwaukee M12 impact would snap the thing. Ended up using a cheap B&D hex bit with my M12 impact, worked great go figure. :eyecrazy:

yeah I bought a set of these online black friday. Store only had china so I returned it as soon as I picked it up. If i recall someone on here acted like I was turning down the deal of a lifetime.

Impact with regular bits = bad

You Didnt really need to read the fine print to know that...

True True, but its sad when a cheap old Black and Decker Chinese hex bit worked out great using my M12 impact. and the US made hex bit snapped on the first try. Mind you I used the cheap B&D one for 20 plus bolts no problem, I think if I would have used the ratchet it would have sheared off too. I don't really want to find out though.

Too bad I can not order this no local stores have it and it is unavailable to ship. Love how sears puts items on sale that are not even available

Hi Elronin, it may have to do with the hardness and brittleness of the two bits. Impact does not want extremely hard because also extremely brittle then. This is why there are impact rated bits which have more toughness (a metallurgical term) and less brittleness (another metallurgical term). Normal bits can be harder and wear better but are not as tough and are more brittle and more likely to fail in an impact situation. - Paul, M.E. on the side

Ok I see what your saying, but some of the reviews on Sears site have people complaining that the bits broke easily when used as they were meant to be used with a ratchet. Don't know whats up with them... Oh well now I have to do a warranty replacement, I doubt they are a stock item.

Ha ha, well that may well be too! The Chinese COO Sears I'm finding to be mainly junk, as many others have found before me. I thought about getting this set because it is a well put together set of bits but chose not to bother when it was clear these are mainly Chinese COO now. I just tried a Sears wrench deal that ended up being complete and total junk and would not function as a racheting wrench once I bought it. Well, Chinese COO.

I did recently get a GearWrench racheting wrench set with Chinese COO also. Those seem to be OK for quality. So we don't want to generalize. Some Chinese COO are going to be just fine. But whoever Sears has been using there is not so good and I will not buy from Sears now if Chinese COO on anything! Caveat Emptor always and in all things. - Paul

I had a Craftsman Industrial set of the Hex Bits, and snapped the hex part the first time I used it. I also have the 42 pc set (made in the USA).

I think the chrome socket part of these sets are great on the USA sets, but the hex insert leaves much to be desired. Weak and snap easy.

Ed that is really scary, but it sounds like even the US based manufacturer of these has a real quality problem. This just should not be but the hardening process used has to be done just right in the manufacture or can have problems. Metallurgists are basically Mechanical Engineers with specialty in materials and processing area and are needed by any supplier to make good parts. The supplier making these either needs a good Metallurgist or a different one if they have one to fix these issues. Sounds like a either a process issue or quality issue there. - Paul

So which would be best if you had a choice, other then one being made in usa and the other one made across the puddle, which is better? I have the choice of either. My store has one usa made set and a bunch of the china sets. If the american made set breaks real easy. Which would you take if c.o.o. was not an issue? thanks Rich...

Richard, the concensus at least for me is don't even buy this set. China COO was already established as bad on this one and now US COO too. Just don't buy this one. - Paul

I have the individual sets of USA made and have not broken a single one. I use the t-50 all the time and it's still going after at least 5 years

The torx are older but have the same G2 stamp on them as the hex set I bought this year. I used the hell out of my sae hex bit socket set recently stripping down an old Harley to rewire it completely. Used them with a ratchet and my 12v craftsman impact with 3/8 adapter. These were bought earlier this year. I wish I could find a USA made set to buy. These were everywhere before the 29.99 sale. Every store around me had at least 1 USA made set in stock. Now they don't even have a china set. I have had great luck with Craftsman bit socket set

Glad to hear I was not the only one that used a 12 volt impact. Sadly my USA made hex snapped on first use. Yea I now it wasn't meant for impact but after reading your post I'm glad yours worked with the impact drill.:rocker:

It seems to be hit or miss with these. Maybe the negative reviews on the sears site and the bad expieriances here were made on a Friday or a hung over Monday.

I purchased this set for $50 a while ago and I wish I picked up a second set. I use these everyday at my job for interior work and adjusting loose mirrors and their assemblies. Very nice will put together set and I have yet to break one.

I would buy this set 1000x over the SO at 10x the price. For people looking for a complete HEX and Torx set (if you can not score these) then I suggest Cornwell or Blue Point just came out with a complete hex and torx set!

I am this biggest stickler for using Chrome on Impact tools...even if it doesn't snap look at the female end it is all blown out!

Well I purchased a set of these and got the 29.99 price, When I went to pick them up they were china made, I looked and there was no U.S.A. made sets to be found, I contacted the store mgr. and showed him the print out from Sear's web site and told him how unhappy I was with them being made in china and that I felt that Sears had baited me in with pic of usa made set and then switched me to a china set. He said he would try to find me an U.S.A. set. A sears buyer called me Monday night and advised that he was shipping me a free U.S.A. set and that I could keep the other set if I wanted to...Rich..

Tried to tighten the adjustment on some kobalt flex head and roto head ratchets. Broke two of the 1/4" torx bits using a 1/4" breaker bar. One twisted and the other sheared off. I thought the whole made inchina thing would be okay for once, as I've never had such a complete set of hex and torx bits. I'm going to have the two replaced, and then part the set out.

Who makes a set of torx bits that I will not break?

I complained to customer service about the photos showing 'USA', but they shipped me a China set. All they offered was to update the photos.

I checked the webpage again after a week, and they did change out the photos. I thought it was a victory until I read your post. :(
