You know what happens when you wash white rags with red rags?

Oh well. I guess they all wipe up grease the same.

Sure. Once I found bits of swarf embedded in some 'new' shop rags I bought at HF. Evidently they were old rags that were cleaned and dyed again.

Always wondered why are they dyed red. I mean hell your just cleaning grease and oil. Make them white like toilet paper so you can tell when you are done lol.

I did that once while I was in the military. Turned all of my grey PT gear into lavender. Happened at night and I had no choice but to go to PT wearing lavender because I had no other gear. Boy did I look stupid.

I had a couple of white T-shirts that my wife didn't care for the logo on. She 'accidentally' washed them with my shop rags. Quickly turned my t-shirts into bright pink shop shirts.

Big deal, they're rags.

Now if you were insisting on using pristine, gun metal gray, designer rags that had some goofy "Man Cave" logo, that I'd laugh at you about.

I buy sheets & curtains @ yard sales for $0.50 - $1.00/set & slice and dice them into my shop rags......disposable cloth rags for about $0.01/each :)

It would cost more than that just to wash them & buy detergent ;)

Yeah, I could care less if I had a bunch of hot pink rags. I can take some kidding, but my friends will know what my come back words will be if they comment on them too viciously. They don't, though.

Auto repair shops typically get shop rags from the same supplier as the one who provides uniforms for the techs. At our shop, we've seen both blue and gray rags and the usual red rags. Sometimes it just depends on what the company offers.

Take them to San Francisco and you can sell them for big $

...or just use them and who cares what color they are, they will be black/brown after using them.

I could give some snarky reply about only a fool would wash shop rags with anything else, but then I'd be forced to admit I was (also) that fool. That stupid dye is not water fast by any stretch!

As for buying old sheets and such I look for flannel sheets, they are the best. I use a huge paper guillotine to cut them up, I can do an entire sheet at one time with it.
