Well fellas, I havent been to an auction in a few weeks bc of the holidays, but being a new year I thought we should start it off right.......and oh boy did we. This morning's auction/estate sale had quite the assortment of truly old items, including an early Blackhawk box. My first thought upon seeing the auction flyer was cool box, too bad I collect other brands. My second thought, dam, that SOB looks to be in pretty good shape and is loaded with early Blackhawk tools, maybe itll have something extra thats from a brand I actually do collect. Thrid thought, if its cheap I can always flip it here.

Arriving a bit late, I saw the box's contents mixed with others in flats on a big table, and the box separate, tools already selling. I gotta admit to being a bit saddened, it was a mostly (if not entirely) complete "kit" set sold originally as the box + tools that was being broken up. Dam, dam, triple dam, Id have given a nut to have that box with its original contents at least mostly complete (or any original early "kit" like that).

The only Blackhawk tools I ended up buying. I have an odd assortment/collection of vintage drive tools, so I picked up all of the 3/8 and 1/2 drive tools, spent all of $12. Theres a few odd non-Blackhawks in there, but most of that drawer including the extensions are early Bhawk. Unfortunately, the early Blackhawk 3/4 drive tools were a bit crusty, so I passed on them after the bidding got above my $20 cheapness, kinda regretting it now. Unfortunately, I also had to pass on the wrenches, sockets, and odd Blackhawk items as they too commanded a bit of a premium.....$2-3 per for common small wrenches (1/4-7/8) and more for the bigger wrenches, sockets were just as crazy.

I ended up buying the box for my opening bid of $5. Why the hell other bidders paid so much for common tools but passed on an early top box in decent shape for $5 I dont know, but they did. FWIW, this is one of the heaviest small boxes Ive ever had, my guess is its 75 lbs empty. I might have to pull the drawers later and make sure there isnt a lead plate in the bottom somewhere!

In the process of buying other tools I thought to myself, why not load the toolbox back up for security and easy transporting? Well, in the process of doing so I discovered how much of a gift $5 really was for this box. Upon opening the lid to load, I noticed the original badge from the front cover inside, but it wasnt a Blackhawk badge........it was a freakin Caterpillar Serviceman's badge!!!! Holy mother of holy grails, Ive wanted a Cat box for years but never could afford a modern one, nevermind the few early boxes Ive seen through ACMOC and the collector sales.

Needless to say, that changed it from a "flip" to a "keep" box. Luckily, SWMBO loves it and agrees we should keep it. Since I dont have room or need for it, she's going to treat the surface rust, repaint, and generally "restore" the outside (the inside just needs a bit of cleaning), then use it for her tools. She has several small portable boxes that sit on our main bench, this will replace them.

The original badge and where it will be reattached to the front hinged lid.

A few other tools I bought today....

A Slocomb mic set I picked up for $5.

A 1/2 hp Walker Turner grinder, missing some of the guards, but for $4 I could care less as I will make/find them. Its definitely a big heavy ******* and will be replacing one of the more modern ones I have that measure Chinese/Taiwanese hp. 1/2 hp is definitely not 1/2 hp anymore. This pretty easily outweighs both of my "Buffalo" grinders and my Cman combined, 50+ lbs is my guess.

Great buy, thinking insanely great if you could have gotten all the original tools.

Great score! If I recall, mine was in the neighborhood of 57 lbs. I thought I got a good deal, but not that good! Before you plan on putting on top of a modern roller, I remember mine being a bit wider than the now-standard 26".

Oh, yeah, You ****!

Wow....very nice tool box! If that's not a large area of surface rust on the drop front, I would recommend to keep it as original as possible. Just clean and use.

Awesome find! I've got that same bench grinder. Does yours look like it has the original paint? I've been trying to figure out what color mine started as.

Thanks. Im going to remove the big drawers tomorrow for a peek, hoping to find gold or other weight behind them. 57 lbs may be correct, Ive been fighting a pretty good cold lately and had a few to drink last night so am a bit "off," almost stayed in bed this morning but really glad I didnt.

Thanks for the heads up on the size, I likely wouldve made myself look silly eventually but for the forseeable future its replacing her pile turned sideways on the right side of this bench.

Great tool purchase. Do you want to sell the box?

Nope. If it was just a Blackhawk Id have gladly cut someone a deal, but being a Cat Serviceman by Blackhawk box its too special for me to let it go anytime soon.

Awesome find! I've got that same bench grinder. Does yours look like it has the original paint? I've been trying to figure out what color mine started as.

Great to network with another owner! Battleship/industrial gray appears to be the original color of mine underneath many decades of sh....errrr....grit. FWIW, my grandfather's machine shop has several drill presses by WT that he bought new, two are gray and one is pea green'ish.

Back on the box fellas, I need some help identifying the part shown below. I know my box is missing the badge and lock, both of which I found inside with this part, but this "channel" has me feeling like a blind idiot. Its a simple U-shaped piece of stamped 14 gauge like the rest of the box with the sides cut at 45 degrees and two holes drilled in one side. Not much paint on the outside of it, but paint inside the U identically matches the toolbox's red. Doesnt appear to support the lid in any way, the lid support is intact, and the lid latches via the usual lock and slot. Im also not seeing any extra holes or unusual/missing features on the box otherwise. Any ideas?

As we go through this, if anybody familiar with these boxes spots any missing parts plz let me know.

I HAVE HAD THAT SAME BOX WITH THE SAME DRAWER CONFIGURATION FOR ABOUT 35-40 YEARS. oops sorry I ain't retyping that.
I'm not sure about that channel piece-might be on the bottom?
Nice score with the cat badges. Mine is missing the BH badges. But I do have them on the bottom matching rollcab.

Impressive deal if you're not fudging the prices. Truly impressive.

I got this one this morning . There doesn't seem to be any evidence of red paint, but the back of the small drawers are grayish. I need to see if the strips on the front are chrome like yours. I don't think mine has the mystery piece, but I'll take a look.

Wow, that box is just too freaking cool, add in the badge and just .

Does anyone have a catalog scan of that box? I have one for the 3 drawer with tray, but not that one with 3, 2 drawer and tray. I take it they were supplied as kits to Caterpillar?

That channel piece does look like a stiffener. Maybe underneath the drawers. After looking at the pics again, is that piece bent sheet metal or is it a piece of cut of tubing/channel/etc? It almost looks like the latter in the pics. Additionally the remaining spot weld locations don't make much sense. Possibly a user added feature :dunno:

And the grinder is nice too.

Every once in awhile I get lucky. Ive bought quite a few similar early boxes for <$20 before, normally Cman, Remline, or other cheapies that are often a bit rough. For posterity!

Linking to my photobucket as theyre a bit larger than normal and Im trying to be considerate of those with slow connections and also those who like better resolution on these old scans.

Great catalog scans! Very interesting-especially with the production numbers! Do you know how long Blackhawk made the Caterpillar Serviceman's tool kits?

Agreed...very interesting catalog scans. You don't get to see these sets in any of the regular Blackhawk catalogs. It looks like throughout the years the sets originally were filled exclusively with Blackhawk tools, then a mix of Blackhawk, Snap-On and W.D. Allen. And finally, exclusive Snap-On, but the box was always a Blackhawk.....:willy_nil
