Some paint missing on the top.

Since I own most everything but a Huot, I don't know the current fair market value. What would you buy/sell it for?

My guess $100 to 150. Looks taller than one I saw at a pawn shop recently that was selling for 200 with a matching bottom roller.

I'd start lower than $100, maybe $50 and go from there. Not for any reason than I guess I am cheap when the seller doesn't shoot a price first. It does look very sharp and well taken care of.

i'm not sure what area of the US you are in, but in the NW these are selling for about $100 or maybe a little less for those type of top boxes in your boxes condition. yours is missing the tool tray and I didn't hear if you had a lock or not but even though I don't need it i'd still give you half a Benjamin for it.

you might get closer to $200 and maybe a bit more if you did a little spiffing up with a new paint job and grabbing a tool tray from another damaged box, but I don't think you would get much more than that IMHO.

if you are in the Seattle area you can PM me if you want my offer.

I'd say $60 - $80 because of condition, but I might go as high as $100 if I was in a buying mood.

cool vintage box... the drawers look a little shallow but that is probably just the pic. just my opinion, if i saw this box laying around at an antique shop or something, i'd probably be willing to pay maybe $80-100 pretty readily, maybe a little more if i had the money on hand.

I'm maybe buying, only because I've never owned a Huot and just wanted to compare it as to quality and utility to the Snap-on, Kennedy, Waterloo, Lumidor, Utica, MBC, et al.

Keep us informed. I'm in the process of cleaning up and lubing the bottom to that box as we speak.

~$100 give or take a little depending on in person condition and if I needed a 27" top box.

Jack,

I believe those handles make that a Kennedy. What are your thoughts?

:headscrat:The box pictured in post #1is most definitely a Huot. They made their own boxes for the most part.

If definitely is. It's very similar to the one I had for years with exception to color and drawer layout.

I'm not sure if kennedy ever made boxes for Huot. Huot has and is their own metal folding company, mostly specializing in cutting tool indexes and the like.

I think the kennedy drawer pulls you are thinking of are slightly tapered towards the top. Is this what you were thinking of?

You're kind of scary, you know that?:lol_hitti

Yes...exactly. You don't think those are the same on the Huot. I also thought we had a Huot family member on this site 2 years ago and he said someone has always made their boxes. Must be wrong.

No, he mentioned that Huot had made boxes for the gov't. He didn't say anything about making or receiving boxes for other companies.

Update - I bought the box sight unseen for $40. I'll wipe it down with WD40 and give an assessment of Huot quality with the rest of the tool storage I've picked up over the years.

Well, now I can say I've owned a Huot.

First, the Huot has about the best side carry handles I've ever seen on a top chest. They are large enough in diameter to give a man something to hang on to and not cut into his hands.

This example is in pretty good shape. The logo is there and intact, it has most of the blue hammertone paint, cork liner is still in the bottom of several of the drawers and the top center drawer still has the little sliding small parts tray.

Having said that, the rest of the build is just about average user quality. It's nowhere as well made or as heavy a gauge metal as a Snap-on, MAC, Matco, the top-of-the-line Waterloo or a Kennedy. Of course, the Huot probably didn't cost anywhere near as much as those boxes either.

This one is missing the right side lid stay and the locking mechanism. Now that I've had an opportunity to play with a Huot I may fab a new stay and send this one on down the craigslist road.

Too bad none of you Huot afficianados live in the area. I'd make you a heckuva deal.

That is the matching top box to the bottom I picked up last week. Only, I think your's is bluer. The blue color on mine is lighter and tends to go toward purple under my fluorescent lights.

You did good for $40.

Excellent pickup for $40. In terms of quality it sounds like a Remline (the handles are pretty similar too)...nice box but not Kennedy quality. Still worth it and then some at the price you paid.

Some Huot top chests have a die-stamped logo on the cover and some have the cast plastic logo as this one has. Any idea as to the production date range of each?

In fact, anyone know the date range of Huot boxes. About when did they cease production?

Nice Find!! I had that same box, but my grandson has it now.
Only difference was mine was labeled "Marquette" Had a plastic insert with Marquette on it inside a chromed metal rim on the front of the box.

I have that same vintage Huot but mine is the smaller six-drawer (and I have the three-drawer lower). My dad bought it for my grandfather, he recalls in the early 70's (but he didn't seem rock-solid certain about the date).

Heres 1 i have. Note it doesn't have the embossed panel and it sports a decal rather than a sticker.

As to dating it, this is the last comment about it when i first posted it last summer.

Yup

I bought a box like this from Mr Huot at a car show in Mpls about 1962. Still have and use it.

There have been Huot postings here before.

Huot used two types of lid stays; one-piece curved and two-piece folding. Which was the earlier and which was the later?

This one comes under the heading of "WAAAY more trouble than it is worth."

PICT0005.JPG

First, there was only one lid stay and it was on the left and shaped like this.
PICT0006.JPG

So naturally, I made a mirror image copy for the right side.

PICT0007.JPG

While install and adjusting it, an unforeseen disaster occurred. I let go of it and it dropped down the slot into the doublewall side of the box.

PICT0008.JPG

Much investigating determined the only way to get it out was to drill a 1/2" hole and fish it with a magnet. This only took about a half-hour of frustration.

However, I wasn't the first to have this malfunction. The first fish I caught was the original right side stay. Note it is straight.

PICT0009.JPG

Since the originals bent too easily, I fabbed two new stays from thicker stock and bent the ends at a 45-degree angle, because the original 90-degree bend was deforming the deck.

PICT0010.JPG

The little angled piece at the bottom of the hinged section of the lid was lying loose in the box. Took me a while to figure where it went and pop-rivet it back in place. The original spot welds were not even close to having penetration. I made a matching piece for the right side.

PICT0012.JPG

Since I had some blue rubber drawer liner on the shelf, I threw that in there.

PICT0011.JPG

Now, I've got $250 labor in a $40 box. Story of my life.

do they have a McClendon's hardware in Spokane? they carry a hammertone blue in their rustoleum line that I use that is $9.99 per can and 10% off if you buy 6 or more (manager's special).

by the way thanks for the lesson on the top holder you had quite a time with. I bet I wasn't the only one to benefit from your pictures and description so it wasn't a complete waste of your time. it does look like a great box.

good luck

Hey FJ 432, I see you're interested in vintage Toyota, and thought I'd tell you about the two Toyota tool boxes I saw on E-Bay a couple days ago. Two different auctions. Original equipment stamped steel tool boxes, out of the old Land Cruisers (I believe). Pretty cool for us Toyota guys.

"Marquette Michigan" if i remember correctly.

Marquette was in Minneapolis, MN.

Never seen a Marquette-labeled box.

Marquette sold tool boxes at some point. I've got one in storage. I'll have to dig it out and see if it looks like a Huot, which is in St. Paul, right next to Minneapolis, so Marquette could have easily sourced Huot boxes.

Who knew there was so much interest and so much to know about the Huot chests?

I've had several PMs lamenting it would cost so much to ship or they'd be sending me a check.

Well, you can add me to that lamenting list. It's a nice drawer layout.
Although, I do have a line on an older one. The handles on it don't match the bottom box I have like yours does, but beggars can't be choosers and I'll be proud to own it if it works out. I'll know in a few months.
