If I had to do it again, I'm pretty sure I'd buy the one piece knipex. I have two mac sets, the 12 piece convertible set and the 4 piece quarter quick turn convertibles. Both styles are pain in the ***. We all know more often then not a snap ring takes more then 20 tries to get off and you spin more time tightening the damn pliers then dicking with the snap ring.

Lang Tool, OEM for Snap On. The full set is available for $90.00 on ebay.

Imperial/stride is the Oem for "some" Snap on snap ring pliers including the Cam lock and quarter turn, the forged pliers are OEM'd by snap on.

Stride also makes them for the majority of tool trucks fwiw..

shockwave;
the problem with the 00 20 04 SB Knipex Circlip Plier 8 pc Set

is you end up with 2 tip sizes in 8 pliers, straight and 90*, internal and external
for $139 on sale

I'd rather have the Mil-Bar set;
12 pliers, 4 tip sizes, straight, 45* and 90*, convertible internal and external

for $83 on Ebay

I liked the Channellocks before the redesign, I went with the Lang/Kastar CM Pro set. I come across maybe 1 snap ring per month, usually much fewer than that. If I needed them weekly or more, those Knipex look ****.

Theres essentially two types. Stamped, which covers about 95% of the sets out there with a few manufacturers, 1 from the USA and I believe two from Asia.

And forged, which is primarily Snap-On and Knipex. Knipex has two versions, the highest end with piano wire tips. A third that I've never seen anyone on here buy, but which look like a great idea to me, are the Forged Wiha Magic tips that are grooved to lock the ring in place (on most sizes but not all).

Best by what criteria?

HF works and was about $5. But if you ever need to reach way, way down into something to get the snap ring, the knipex set looks like it has one with the reach. But it's like you're paying the cost of the set to have that one pliers? Otherwise, yeah, HF.

Hf may work on many snap rings you run across, if you got a real stubborn one on a shaft with tight clearances and a strong ring, then the HF just plain might not got the job done. I've got knipex and snap on forged. But i also do transmissions so there are times I need to be sure I got a good pair for a ring.

The reason I bought the Lang set that I did was, I have a set from Northern which is basically identical to the HF. It just plain did not get the job done on a particular ring, and I had to borrow one to put the ring back in.

There isn't anything 'wrong' with my Northern set, they just aren't as strong. You can't squeeze them tight they twist too much and then you can't slide the ring in. It's easier pulling out since you have the grooves to follow but even that is a struggle.

Poorly made snap ring pliers definitely falls into the category of not worth it. Nothing like not being able to get a grip on the ring or having it fly off into an alternate universe portal located in the shadows of every shop AND getting your fingers crunched from the sudden tension release in the process.
