Since we've had several threads re: Snap On taco boxes recently, I started this thread for owners to post pics of theirs.

Mine is a Snap On KR 562E I picked up the week before Thanksgiving. 1984 date code. This one has been repainted at some point with a darker shade of red. I've taken all the drawers out of the box, cleaned and lubed the slides, replacing some where necessary, and put it all back together. All the drawers slide well, though some a bit better than others. This one has ball bearing slides on the bottom drawer of the side, but all the other drawers are friction slide.

Let's see yours!

So what's behind the Taco name. Why do these boxes carry that nickname? A very cool design though. IMO

It's not really scientific. If you have ever eaten tacos off of the street in Mexico you would get it. Part of the story can be seen by the fact that they were made to travel many miles on rough roads. Hence the wicked casters, and the optional tow hitch which mine has vu3ete7u.jpg

Hey Lookin, does your's have the locking floor mechanism? Mine doesn't, kinda bummed about it. Also, where did you find the model number & info? Looks like inside of the cabinet door?

Nope, mine doesn't have the floor brake either. :(

Look on the back of yours in one of the upper corners. The stamping will be a faint engraving, and it's easiest to find when you're looking in daylight.

What model is yours? I thought the floor brake was standard on all models unlike the tow hitch which is definitely optional. Luckily mine has both. I have a KR-562B
I also heard that the 562C has ball bearing slides?!? Anyone know anything about that. My box is from 1981 and I can't seem to find a 1981 catalog. Bummer.

I don't know about taco but I like Mikes setup when you toss in the cart for perspective. I will say from the pic that it is in desperate need of a hose reel in the pic though. I really like the cart, the air tools stuck up are a real good idea, about one of the best schemes yet. I might have to steal that. I am going to buy one more 1/2 impact this summer, we have a place we share one. Its not that its in use so hi just inconvenient.
I like the thing with the vise and steel top too especially ok for home garage use.

I have one too (traveling so no picture) I love that box was my first new box (1980)
They always called them airport boxes supposedly you could tow it out on the flight line
mine came with a tow hitch. I've had several SO boxes since but that one is my favorite
Might be nostalgia. I never traded it in

My 1973 KRA 396U which I believe is the same lineage as the taco cart. Maybe this should be the breakfast burrito cart!

Although it doesn't have the drawer space of the taco cart I liked the rounded corners. I'm considering restoring this to a olive green with a black resin top.

That's very cool, and yes, it's the father of the 562 series. The original 'taco cart'

The original paint on yours looks real good. Personally, I'd keep as is. :)

Agreed. I'd stick with the original paint. Mine has a few dings and scratches and I have been tempted to Repaint it extreme green, at the end of the day i don't think I will because it has character how it is. Yours has TONS of character. Cool box.

I like that A lot, but the only way I would paint it is if the olive green was OEM. leave it red.

Does it have ball bearing slides? I was told the c does.

I'm not sure if any of them had all BB slides. In the mid 80's they started mixing in ball bearing slides on the bottom drawers of boxes that would potentially be loaded heavy. I don't think it was till the later 80's when they converted to KR6xx series boxes that they went all BB slides. Check me on that though. :dunno:

I'm assuming these only ever came in red, but I can imagine these would look killer in black.

Based on the time frame we are talking about, Red was likely the only color they offered. About the only differences were badge style and aluminum trim pieces. Different color boxes besides blackish grey (30's and 40's) and red didn't come out till the early 90's or very late 80's. Can you image a modern twist like say the green color so many like on a original taco box? O my, some people may go crazy over that. I believe that would be classified as Retro :willy_nil

I would like to know more about these taco carts as well. I have a KR-562D with a 1984 date, and saw that someone's KR-562E also has the same date of 1984. So I had assumed that was the last year they were made, until I saw a KR-562F with a date of 1992. It was pretty cheap, so I had to grab it. So my question is, is the F model the last one, and therefore 1992 was the last year these were made? Does anyone else have the KR-562F model?

Does anyone know of any other company that made boxes in this configuration? I have a friend that has one he got from a garage sale for like $100. It has no markings on it, but I told him it looks like an old snap-on but I don't know for sure. I think it was a helluva deal either way.

MBC (people that made snap on boxes) made one I think. Got any pics handy? It should be stamped somewhere on the box. Kennedy had a version but it's quite a bit different in build style.
