Last week I bought this rotary hammer at Northern Tool.

I had to put 14 new floor anchors in our gym to accomodate rearranging some bars and a ring tower. I bought two 1" SDS Plus bits ($64 each)from Fastenal as Lowes didn't have one(naturally). I drilled 10 of them with zero problems. I made sure the bit didn't get too hot and kept the holes vacuumed out as I went. A few times the bit hit a rock and progress slowed for a few seconds then back to normal. I would estimate each hole took at most two minutes, probably less. The holes were each about 4 inches deep.

The drill casing didn't get hot, was heavy enough that it soaked up plenty of vibration, bit change was easy. Absolutely no regrets so far. I really wanted a Bosch Bulldog but couldn't justify $250 as opposed to $90. I rented a Bosch from the local tool rental place a few years ago and it worked great. The rental fee is now $50 for half a day, so I decided to buy my own.

One of our team members parents drilled the other four holes with this and a bit from HF:

No problems there either. He told me he had also used his to drill thirty 1/2" holes for his deck into concrete.

A thumbs up for Bosch bits too. The last four hammer drill bits I bought were Vermont American and they weren't worth a damn. They dulled very quick and one had the tip break on the first hole. The Bosch SDS Plus bit had little visible wear on the tip and cut as fast on hole 10 as it did on hole 1. In fact, I never had to use the second bit so I'm taking it back Monday. The first bit did all 10 holes.

Also, the one I got from Northern Tool included this in the box at no extra cost:

I didn't know that was included so I bought one of these from the clearance table for $19.

Plus an 18" long, 1" diameter bit looks cool sticking out of that rotary hammer.

I have the Harbor Freight hammer drill. I buy Bosch SDS bits for it from Home Depot. I have drilled several hundred holes with it. I rented a bosch electric jack hammer to trench a basement floor for a drain line. While installing the drain line, I discovered I needed to widen the trench in a couple of places. The jack hammer had already been returned. I used the pointed chisel in the Harbor Freight drill to perform this task. I ran it's guts out and it has held up fine.

+1 on the HF SDS "Coach" and "Stevenw". I bought mine five years ago for a single project. Rental was $60/day, but the SDS was on sale. When I included a 20% discount coupon, I walked out of the store for under $35. It drilled 67 5/8" holes that weekend and just kept on going.

I've loaned it out, and used the heck out of it myself -- not one single problem. It's HF and is a keeper --

I have the HF. I too bought it because it was the same price as renting one. I did 12 3/4 inch holes with it in under an hour and it had no problems. Highly recommended and happy with my purchase.

So that HF will break up concrete??? That's good news because I have a small concrete pad I need destroyed.

Anyone got a link to a good concrete-destroying bit?

I used it to enlarge a trench I made with an electric jack hammer by about 1.5 square foot. It comes with a pointed chisel.

If you are doing anything larger, I'd rent an electric jack hammer.

Harbor Freight has bigger options for demolition; although, I've never used them...
